We have been hearing that services will surely start from December 2023 On 26/12/2023, I observed a huge amount of concrete ready mix being poured into a deep crater the size of an international badminton court at least beside the Esplanade station, that is too much below ground level. Being a layman I know such casting takes about one month of settlement and further one month of curing. The East West metro Esplanade station (the overground part) is very much in the formative state. The finishing work of Mahakaran station will take at least two months to complete. We don't seem to understand that the fares of Kolkata metro are so low that it is incurring heavy losses by operations alone. Operating loss (carnage, to put it bluntly) is extremely high. We must corporatize the Kolkata metro system or bring the fares up to the level of Delhi metro at least. By the way, I got to travel by the CRRC Dalian rake on the North South metro for two occasions very recently. Contrary to what had been touted in this channel for so long, these Chinese rakes are inferior to the Medha rakes in operation. They are low in height, the seating is less spacious and the air conditioning is inferior compared to the very efficient Medha rakes. We have to be pragmatic about the fares, and the juvenile timing of Kolkata metro. Who would complete their work by 9:40 pm or wait until 7 am for the day to start. Most intercity trains start from Howrah and Sealdah around 6 am and most of them return around 10 pm. If we can't provide services to the chunk of these passengers, why are we trying to provide connectivity to major stations and the airport?
Seriously, Kolkata Metro needs to raise the fares so that it can self-sustain. But then the typical communist public will start protesting and bandhs etc.
If metro fare rises like delhi metro.. less commuters will take metro.. Bcz in kolkata and its nebouring areas people dont have that sufficient income... to avail fare like delhi metro.... people will take other transport system... no matter it will take much longer time to reach their destination.
