I was lucky to see Genesis live in 1976 during the "Trick Of The Tail" tour that featured Bill Buford on drums. Supper’s Ready was definitely one of the highlights of the show. However, the entire concert was out of this world fantastic! Since there was less focus on costumes and stage antics, the light show and visuals on the triple screen backdrop was used to great effect on every song. Interestingly, there was little hype in the advertisement for the concert. I thought that Peter Gabriel was still the vocalist when I bought the ticket. Imagine my surprise when I saw Phil singing and Bill drumming when the band opened with Dance On A Volcano. One memory of the performance of Supper’s Ready was seeing Phil accidentally knock a cymbal stand into one of the backdrop screens causing a big rip as he was running from the stage to his drum kit. He actually stopped playing and stared at the rip in amazement as the band kept playing on.
Jordan Rudess featured bits from Suppers Ready and Dance On A Volcano on his 2007 album “The Road Home”.
Thanks for another great posting. I always enjoy watching your videos.
    Peace…

Topper, that is an incredible story! Had you heard A Trick of the Tail prior to the show? Once you figured out Peter Gabriel was no longer the singer were you disappointed or were you pleasantly surprised at Phil Collins being the front man? Sorry for all of the questions but this is fascinating to me. Maybe you could talk about this in an upcoming video. Thanks. -Bill

Had not heard A Trick Of The Tail before the concert. Was pleasantly surprised that Phil Collins sounded so great doing the vocals. Disappointed at missing Peter Gabriel but still blown away by the performance.

I saw them in Brussels in 1976. It was pure magic from beginning to end, an element that was mostly lost by 1977 and certainly by 1978, when the audience got a lot raunchier. (Don't forget they had a massive hit with "Follow You, Follow Me" at the time.) I recall Phil standing high behind the band during "666 is no longer alone . . . ", entirely dressed in white and with his hands in the air like a priest saying mass or conjuring up something out of the sky. After the encores he thanked the audience for buying the tickets!

On Apocalypse you have Hackett, Rutherford, and Collins playing 9/8 while Banks alternates between 4/4 and 7/8. Brilliant. Not sure if it was mentioned in the video as I don't have time to listen to it all. Just heard the beginning where he mentions the band playing in 9/8 and wanted to point out that not all of the band was doing this.

The Seconds Out version is amazing although i wish it was better recorded. Phil just sings it with more passion in my opinion. The version with Bruford (although only the second half of the song) is the highlight for me. Just listen to Rutherford's bass pedal work at the end on that one. Its too bad we don't have a official live version during the Gabriel era from the foxtrot tour.

Prog Notes: I love your prog channel keep up the great work. I don’t always agree with your faves but that’s not an issue. My favorite version is the original on Foxtrot. I went out and bought it on release and have a lot of memories associated with it. None of my friends were into prog and I’m not surprised as we were only 12. I was into the genre heavily influenced by my then 16 year old brother. I love the 666 section really makes the song - PG at his very best. However, not my favorite song on Foxtrot. That goes to Can-Utility and the Coastliners!

First time I saw Genesis live was for the Lamb Lies Down tour in Montreal. I didn't know them at all then, a friend told me to go see that show and I was hooked rigth on the spot! I still think that it's one of the five best shows I have seen in my life and I have seen a lot! They didn't play it on that tour but I bougth the album not long after that and it's soon became one of my favorite song.
Since then I heard it live in shows many times by "The musical Box" and Steve Hackett. I think that the singer for the Steve Hackett tour didn't give justice to the song. Maybe he was not in shape when I saw him but it was the low point of the show. When you compare him to the recorded version with Peter Gabriel or the one from The Musical Box, he realy don't stand up to par.

I remember as a young teenager listening to this in '72 - it knocked me on my arse. This music and lyrical imagery were my escape from the world (still is). Thank you Genesis.
I saw them live in Glasgow '73, 76 - Edinburgh in '77 and '82 and again in Glasgow doing Invisible Touch tour in '87.
I went again to see them in Glasgow in 98 with the Calling all Stations tour with Steven Wilson singing lead - utterly dreadful - lifeless, colourless new songs and zero stage presence from Wilson. They played pieces of old favourites but it seemed like a token gesture. I went home half way through. Genesis later canceled a planned U.S. tour which says it all.
BUT I have tickets to see Steve Hacket - Genesis revisited in October in Glasgow, cannot wait ( I'm sure I'll have wet eyes during the performance - we go back a long way lol)

The end of willow farm at:... and all of us fall in our places: then you get those 5 notes again but this time it progresses "down, down, down, down, down into an interplay between Banks and Hackett, the moment you described as 'the song kind of collapses under the weight that just happened', and then build back up in apocalypse. It is a "heavy" moment in this "heaviest" of songs and I have herd many versions but there is one , Chicago Auditorium 1977 were that interplay between Banks and Hackett was, with only a couple more notes from Hackett was so perfect that I tagged it as the heaviest moment in rock.

I prefer the Peter Gabriel's performance, his voice make you get to the song. I still regret that the band didn't want to make Genesis Live as a double album. They just wanted a simple album until Selling england had been finished, but that was a stupid decision and more with their Italy fans where they were a big succed.

With the video of Genesis in Concert, from 1976, it seems to me that Phil Collins' version is as theatrical if not more than Peter Gabriel's one. Gabriel used costumes and it's their lyrics but Collins with those gestures and faces sang like he is believing his role. He was singing like he is the starring of the lyrics

For me it goes to the ‘76 performance. There’s a RUclips video called ‘Genesis 1976 Live Remastered (25 to 24 frame rate correction)’ which is by far the best recording IMO.

  • @MrChrodo
    @MrChrodo 6 лет назад +6

The best live version might be from 1976, with Phil and Steve sounding much better than on Second's Out. And Bill Bruford really fits the dynamic playing style the song needs.
I like the live version from Bern 76 the most, you can find it on RUclips.
Beside that, 1982 was also a very strong tour and they had a slightly different ending with Daryl on guitar + stronger vocals by Phil.
And to be honest: Nad Sylvan doesn't sing that bad, but it doesn't fit to the track in it's entirety. However, Steve nailed especially the last part of the track, the solo is simply perfect. But yet again, in 72, even if they would have tried to put in a longer solo at the end, besides the limitations of a record, i don't think he could have played back then it like this.

The Foxtrot and Seconds Out versions are the ones I'm most familiar with and have no preference since I listen to each within the context of their respective albums. Simple Minds have a track (In Trance As Mission from their 1980 album Sons And Fascination) which is built on Apocalypse In 9/8.

Take a listen to Steve Hackett Live at the Albert Hall. It harkens back to the studio version on Foxtrot. I listen to that purely for the solo at the end which Steve finally gets to flush out. Overall on the pure Genesis side the 1976 TOTT tour version version with Buford in drums and Phil on vocals is the best.

I love Supper's Ready as much as the next person but am i the only one who prefers A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers from Van Der Graaf Generator a bit more. It has pretty a similar style to Supper's Ready but i find it better executed and way more atmospheric and exciting. There's a bootleg out there, when they played Suppers Ready on the Three Side Encore Tour. They had played in Saratoga Springs, NY, and Phil sounded like Phil! None of this, "I'm trying to be Pete" crap. He was Phil and it was amazing. I mean, Apocalypse in 9/8, he was a little raspy and his voice broke a bit, but not as bad as the infamous Auckland show from the Invisible Touch Tour. If I were to create my best Suppers Ready, I would have everything before apocalypse, from the aforementioned Saratoga Springs show, then the Invisible Touch bootleg show going into Apocalypse and then into As sure as eggs is eggs. My rant is over. Phil is the best for me.

How about we agree that both versions were incredible, but that you physically see the band Musical Box before you hard pan them based on poor quality RUclips vids. The costume changes are there, the stories between songs are there, the flute is played by him, not piped in. If you close your eyes, it is almost like a time machine. Only because you don't understand the music and how great the real Genesis was. Of course, they would not let Steve do improvs, this is not what Genesis was about. The quality of that solo and how the guitar sounds vs the original is also debatable, but more a question of taste I suppose. But it doesn't fit the song, that's for sure.

It's refreshing to find a young persons opinion on Suppers Ready, it's a rare occurrence! Im thinking of doing older prog rock album reviews on my channel as it is so integral to what your music taste develops into. Great review, new sub and feel free to come over to my channel!

Thanks for the support! I saw your channel and love what you're doing! I agree, I think it's very important us young folk talk about prog, and I think it's even more important for a young woman's voice to be heard, so please keep doing what you're doing :) you've got a new sub from this guy :D

Notes Reviews Thank you so much, I do find music reviews is a very male dominated niche on RUclips, it seems that women just do the reaction videos which is great but I want more!! Thanks again for your lovely comments:)

I didn't touch upon that one, as it was the same edition from the Rainbow Show. It incorporated the costume changes and theatrics from the BBC so I felt it was a bit redundant to go into that one as well.

I always found Phil's version of SR more melodic. Peter was a storyteller, he told his story. Phil sang the song, and that's what I prefer.

The last part is "As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs (ACHING Men's Feet)," like an ACHE,. It's not "ARCING."

I'd say As Sure As Eggs Is Eggs is a reprise of The Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man rather that Lover Leap

Umm...nice overview but not sure why you’re butchering the section titles so much. They’re fairly phonetic if you take your time....Ikhnaton (Ik-not-on) and Itsacon (It-sack-ahn)...Delicious Talents (tenements??)...Gabble Ratchet (no phonetics required) :-)
And, while I love Peter, Phil’s Seconds Out version is the best...both musically and vocally. Pete may sing it with more understanding of what he’s singing but Phil’s delivery is superior. His voice was at its peak in 1977, especially on this track.

I for one do not like the willow farm bit. I know they did not want it to be another musical box/stagnation, but for me it does not work. All the drama and build up is lost for me because of it. The quirky riff and lyrics that are more of a exercise in word play, do not have the same emotional depth as the rest of the piece. Compared to the stunning closing section, both lyricly and musically, willow farm literally feels just put in between and disconnected.

Though not bad, as a whole I didn't care for Phil's vocals. He's always ad-lib through the classics. Echo included in Supper's, so it sounded like "66666666 is no longer alone". Blah. Or in The Lamb, "And the lamb lies down....down, down, down...." Takes all the intensity out of the song. Always hated that.

I don't think the writers ever put this much thought into this music. It seems it's just constructed measure to measure. If you're looking for Heavy Social Comment, (as my friends and I called it) go listen to Brown Shoes Don't Make It. I've tried to listen to Genesis music over the years and couldn't ever get into them. I do appreciate they were different than other groups but they were a little stale. And one of Progressive Rocks best songs? Not even in the top 50. I haven't even seen a good definition of what Progressive Rock is. If it takes this long to define a song then it's not a good indication or definition of what that song is truly about. Don't mean to offend anyone. Guess I'm getting old. My first concert was in 61 - Trini Lopez. (he tried out for the Crickets after Buddy Holly died) Then two years later it was the Beach Boys.
