TPatG will always be the winner for me... Octopus, FH, AtT, and IaGH are all great. And yeah, Three Friends is a good album, but I'd say Interview is up there as well. Interview is so full of inaccessible avant garde passages, that it's obviously just as prog as any of the other big GG albums. Even they're more accessible pieces on TMP have complexities that are up there with the rest. It's when we get to GfaD that everything starts becoming significantly questionable. And, of course, even Civilian is better than GfaD.

My ranking on the albums I've heard by them:
    1. Power And The Glory (Used to be my least favourite, but it grew on me in a massive way, Proclamation in particular is absolutely incredible with the perfect interplay between everything, especially of the vocal harmonies.)
    2. Three Friends (Peel the Paint is just too good, the rest of the album tends to be pretty great as well)
    3. Gentle Giant (The most cohesive album in their career, also has a lot of their best melodies, tracks like Alucard and Funny Ways are incredible)
    4. Acquiring The Taste (A couple of iffy points on it, especially Plain Truth, but definitely is great in terms of how wide the variety here is, and the extremely complex nature of the tracks is both a positive and negative depending on the track, as it can feel a bit much at times)
    5. In A Glass House (A bit too clinical and abstract in a lot of places for me, I feel like a lot of these songs end up meandering a lot, despite the fact that the title track is great)
    6. Octopus (Knots is my second favourite song by the band, and it has a great one - two punch to kick things off, but I find a lot of this album to just not interest me in any particular way, still decent, but nothing incredible imo)
    7. Free Hand (Just don't find much here to be particularly interesting other than the title track)

  • @juliusroescher
    @juliusroescher 5 лет назад +15

There definitely were some hot takes in this video. Missing piece before Giant for a day?! Oh well, here's my list (though it keeps on changing):
    1. In A Glass House ("The Runaway" and the title track are absolutely mindblowing! I also love "A Reunion" though it often gets overlooked)
    2. Three Friends (I really dig the simple concept and the execution is brilliant. "Peel the Paint" is amazing! And that Gary Green guitar solo is one for the ages!)
    3. Acquiring The Taste ("Pantagruels Nativity" is one of the the most haunting pieces of music i have ever heard. It just got it all. Great orchestration, chilling harmonies, hard hitting guitar-riffs and it's all contrasted beautifully by Kerry's fragile voice in the verses. I LOVE IT! The other songs are amazing as well, especially "The House, The Street, The Room")
    4. The Power And The Glory (Just a powerhouse of a record! I love the way "Proclamation" and "Valedictory" bookends
the album. "Aspirations" is beautiful, the harmonies in "No Gods A Man" are magnificent. But my favorite song is by far "Playing the Game"! It's got a great playful groove and it contains my favorite Kerry Minnear solo. HAIL!)
    5. Free Hand
(I personally think "His Last Voyage" is the most beautiful GG song there is. Especially the middle section where they layered Kerry's voice is just breathtaking! "On Reflection" is crazy! I never heard another band even attempt to do anything like that. I think the rest of the album flows nicely too)
    6. Octopus ("The Advent of Panurge" was the first GG i ever heard (a little over a year ago) and I fell in love instantly! Wonderful orchestration and i adore the middle section with the crazy voices. But as you said, it feels more like a collection of songs than a cohesive album. "Knots", "Think of Me With Kindness" and "River" are all excellent too)
    7. In’terview
(I personally love this record despite it's flaws. My favorite is "I Lost My Head". I even learn the whole thing on my piano. The title track, "Empty City" and "Design" are all amazing as well)
    8. Gentle Giant
("Giant", "Funny Ways" and "Nothing At All" are all fantastic, though i feel like they haven't quite found their sound yet)
    9. The Missing Piece
(Here the cracks are starting to show. But nevertheless think "Memories of Old Days" stands above the rest. What a beautiful song! I must admit i got a soft spot for "Two Weeks In Spain" as well)
    10. Civilian
(I need to give this a second listen)
    11. Giant For A Day (This one too..)

I fell in love with them in 1977 age 17. Never ever thought differently. I'm actually a fan of Civilian by them. I featured their songs on my radio show in the early 90s. They predicted New Wave on The Missing Piece believe me. All those latter day albums were complex Pop Songs, obviously management pushed for hits, same happened to Renaissance. Management. ELP Love Beach. You have to be British to get their Feudal approach.

Good analysis. I'd flip Octopus and Three friends but get your point. I followed the band form the start but hadn't heard ATT until years after they broke up so I was in a different head space at that time, and it never registered with me, though many think highly of it. In retrospect, Free Hand doesn't hold up (except for On Reflection) and The Power and the Glory impresses me even more. Everything after Interview is a wash because they were no longer inspired at that point. It's okay but I don't need it because their earlier stuff is so much better.

Thank you for making this video! A friend turned me onto GG when I was 18, and because I had also started listening heavily to 1950s/60s Jazz music, my life was turned upside-down. I found myself disagreeing with a lot of your opinions and favorites, which was so interesting to me because I so typically (and wrongly) expect others to share my opinions more closely when it comes to obscure music. For example, 'Think of Me With Kindness' is one of the songs I skip when I listen to Octopus, the other being 'Dog's Life.' Next to the majority of Giant for A Day, those are two of my least favorite songs. Yet, I agree with you on why 'Think of Me...' is a good tune, and it is a sincerely heartfelt one appropriate for a goodbye. Kerry Minnear's voice is also just angelic and grows on you the more you listen. 'Just the Same' and 'Proclamation' are the 2 first songs I heard by GG, and they remain favorites. I appreciated where you ranked In A Glass House and Three Friends. What surprised me was when you said the second side of In A Glass House is weaker than the first side. I fell in love with the final, title track off the album. Like 'I Lost My Head' off of Interview, the song In A Glass House evolves and transforms from beginning to end. In my opinion, it is a strong closer to the album. Finally, while Three Friends is not my absolute favorite, it's probably my second favorite for the same reasons you list. I don't know if I have a favorite album. If anything, it's a toss up between Free Hand and In A Glass House.

I have come into possession of one of the members of this bands 8-track collection, one of the brothers entire personal collection. A lot of Cream, King Crimson, , heep, Flyod (weird albums too), German tapes. It’s super cool looking at their collection and then listening to their music and seeing what they drew inspiration from.

Hey Notes, great worst to best for Gentle Giant ...when the band was new I was not interested into their quirky prog & vocals....but now as life has gone on I really like their style of provocative & smart proggy music , they really grew on me as well and as I listened more and more to the LPS I discovered there is some fantastic music on them.... “Power & the Glory” ( which is about Nixon & Watergate) so there is anger & frustration on that album ,just imagine politics pissing you off , ha ! ....it is a little further up on my list... great job as always.🎶🎸🥁🎹🎤 thanks.
PS any thoughts on their live lp “playing the fool”

  • @MUZAKFORCAGES

As Germans, we always have to say something, too ...
We think, there is no definite No. 1 in Gentle Giant's discography, but three groups:
    Their BEST Albums:
Acquiring The Taste / Three Friends / Octopus / In A Glass House / The Power And The Glory / Free Hand / In’terview
    Their OK Albums:
Gentle Giant / The Missing Piece
    Their HIDE YOURSELF Albums:
Giant For A Day / Civilian
but there is one more Album to highlight, it's their sort of second OFFICIAL Live Album after "Playing the Fool": "Live At The Bicentennial 1776-1976". This is so powerful, you would'nt think, after that tour, they'd lose their touch...

What? Only 2 big songs on TPatG? The Power and the Glory is a blast from start to finish! Proclamation, So Sincere, Aspirations, Playing the Game, Cogs in Cogs, No God's a Man, The Face and Valedictory, they are all amazing, big songs if you get used to their sound on that album. Good list tho, I like how you ranked Three Friends as rank 1 because Gentle Giant fans are generally so harsh on that album for no reason.

This is the first group you've done where I've heard all of their albums. The Power and the Glory was the first album I ever heard of their's (found them on Pandora) and I was blown away and also a little upset that nothing came close to it. That is my all-time favorite GG album, by a wide margin. Shocked to see Interview so low. I view that as their last actually good album. Giant For a Day and Civilian sound like a totally different band, and I would put The Missing Piece above both of those. Your number one pick is a good choice, though. Really cannot stand Acquiring the Taste, though.
