    "Powder room" is also a term for a bathroom in English. Usually it is just a toilet and a sink without the shower area for guests. So hwajangsil is not weird at all.

    What would be cool is if you did a series on common words around a city. Like going to the grocery store and giving us the vocabulary (cart, bag, lettuce, aisle, etc.) or around the park (tree, sky, playground, picnic, etc.) That would be fun and give us lots of vocabulary words to have to use. :)

    We also call laptops “notebooks”. This was the time period where people didn’t know the difference between “notebook” and “tablet”. A tablet was all touchscreen and no keyboard and a notebook was thought of as a small laptop, although it really doesn’t matter if it is small or big. 20 years ago, if you asked for a notebook,you would get a pad of paper. 10 years ago, you would get a laptop. That’s where “Notebook” comes from.

    Smaller Bathroom are also called 'powder room' and I assume that's where the similar "hwajang" comes into picture
    Notebook and laptop open in a similar way which probably build to the name. Also there are laptops in the market with called notebook to signify laptops. Smaller versions where called netbook(but that didn't get much populity I guess)
    These are just assumptions though.

    Your table is still a table. It’s a coffee table. It makes sense that you call skin care products as 화정본 . And that 화장법 그리고 화장실 are associated because in English we call those skin care products/ bath products/ soaps / hair care products etc as toiletries 🧴 which is associated with the toilet/ bathroom. So now you know.

    Actually in old English "Toilet" used to mean " a place where you take care of yourself as in doing make up and so" . But in modern English the meaning changed to "bathroom or the place where you do your morning stuff" so I think it happened with other languages too. Other languages also adapted the meaning according to the English one.

    My first ‘laptop’ was a Samsung notebook. It was a small laptop - ideal for travel. So 노트북 makes perfect sense to me. Also an old fashioned term In English for bathroom is ‘Powder room’ ….where a lady would ‘powder her nose ( put on makeup) so maybe that’s where 화장실 comes from.

  • @jimmykong9902
    @jimmykong9902 4 года назад

    In regards to hwa-jang-sil; In the states, we also call the bathroom a 'powder-room' which refers to a place where women re-touch their make-up (ex. "She's going to powder her nose"). But that term is rarely used now since it's from the earlier/older century.

    In germany we also call laptops notebooks^^ at least sometimes. We also have a term for english words that found their way into the german language, it‘s called „Denglish“, or „Denglisch“. That‘s a mixture of Deutsch and English. (Deutsch means german)

  • @Zoehere
    @Zoehere 3 года назад

    Omg 화장실 is like the word powder-room!
    Powder room can technically be a general word 4 bathroom!!(tho you would lowkey sound like a weird posh brit😭)
    Powder room would mainly describe a bathroom w/out a bath/shower or refer to any small, private bathroom.
    It is actually so interesting both languages have a common word for bathroom that come from a word for putting on makeup!

    Maybe "Hea-jang and Hwa-jang-sil" are like "toilet and toiletries", or calling the guest toilet the "powder room"?
    (In French, the "Toilette" was the whole concept of getting yourself ready, including dress, hair and makeup. So maybe it's the same connection in Korean?)

    Here is another thing in English that might answer something in Korean. Makeup room could relate to a “powder room”. A long time ago, women would say that they were going to “the powder room to powder their nose” or “apply more make up” but yet they were going to use the restroom. This was their way of trying not to say they needed to go poop or pee. Soon, powder room became synonymous with bathroom. Maybe that’s how it got it’s name in Korean as well.
