So here’s a story all about how I ruined my Louis Vuitton bag! Ok, it’s not totally completely ruined…but I’m not a happy camper! Hopefully this video shows what NOT to do with a Louis Vuitton bag…especially one that is vintage. I think vintage is the difference here!

Just own those watermarks girl.Screw having to baby expensive stuff like that. I approach luxury with the mindset of, If I cant afford to use it liberally, then I can't afford it. The bottom of the two leather straps on my keepall are scuffed to shit from being put on airport floors. These items should bring me joy, not make my life harder.

I was in the exact same position as you Shea! I purchased a vintage Cruiser 45 and used it for the first time last week. When I arrived at my destination it was raining and my bag got several water marks. I took the advice below and gave my bag a warm water bath just now and the spots disappeared! I am so happy!! You can't go wrong with the Macassar version. I have one in a 45 and it's perfect. I use it as a gym bag or for long weekends. Otherwise, I recommend going with another 50 keepall in monogram - I found one ages ago in near perfect condition despite being decades old .. there are others out there! xx

I have marker marks on my speedy 😂 literally, there’s marker lines all on the straps and I have a lot of water makes too! It just adds character and makes it look more vintage which I LOVE!
You could try the " Patina Champ Method", which consists of applying a damp cloth to the vachetta. It may help even out the stains.
Yes, I could try that. But it just bothers me that the strap would be much darker than the bag. I'm just weird!
The damp cloth would definitely work. If the stain is deep it may require to go over a couple of times. Also, I had a very old bag with a very dark vachette, I put the strap to water completely and rubbed it with a clean cloth (no soap no nothing, just water). Dried flat and some hair dryer. It turned ok.

I really appreciate this informational video! I just bought my first vintage Louie bag and also vintage agenda.
I went straight to Amaxon to purchase the spray. I would have been mortified with water spots especially since both of my pieces are in near pristine condition.
I love the vintage LVs, I'd be really sad if that happened to me too....it must be some combination of the oils, change in leather composition, and water over time....hope you sold it :) thanks for the cautionary tale.

Hi, Shea. First, go Pens! Second, your bag is not ruined at all. I have restored a large number of vintage bags that had significant water spots. What worked best for me was saturating the water-damaged area . . . with more water. Sounds crazy, but I've evened out the patina by doing that. Not dripping wet. Just blot some water on the neighboring areas and once it's FULLY dry, apply a good leather lotion (Coach is great). Then rub the strap with your hand while watching tv etc. Or, you can do nothing and just use the bag, which will eventually burnish more evenly. Good luck - that Keepall is a great investment, so enjoy it and don't fret.

My nephew sat on my purse that had a water bottle in it and I was devastated. It was a light colored bag and I was afraid it was ruined I went on to the internet and most of the advice was the same as yours and said to saturated the bag with water. I eventually worked up the nerve to do it and it saved my life.

This is why I bought the keepall macassar bandolouier (55) because I knew you never know how the weather will be while traveling and I didn't want to deal nor baby the vachetta. BEST decision ever! You're going to love it trust me it's so worry free and personally the black leather looks really good with the monogram.
I wish the black came as an option on more pieces now.

I didn't know vintage vachetta can still get watermarks. I thought once it has a dark patina watermarks don't happen. I was way off

Oh my! sorry this happened to you. I have a very old, now discontinued, Saumur. I love it as it has beautifully patina to a dark honey. Just 3 days or so ago I was caught in the rain and not a single watermark. I no longer baby it because it doesn't stain by water. Interesting, I wonder if different leather hides may have something to do with it?

yes i had my vintage bag when i got caught in the rain. not so much water marks on the leather so much as it turned my handles dark chocolate over night....it was so sad. I've cleaned all the other vachetta such as the tags and lining but my handles will forever be dark dark dark patina.
OMG, this killed me cause I feel your pain! Haven't ruined any LV bag yet but I did overstuff an Alma GM which makes it dented at the top and the zipper wavy and I STILL haven't gotten over it!!! That was 5 years ago!!! Love the video!!! Thanks!!

I used Apple Garde on my new Neverfull MM to protect the straps. For the more detailed areas I used a makeup brush to apply it so I wouldn't spay the canvas. It turned out perfectly, thanks for recommending it!

Shea, you can use a lightly damp magic eraser on your vachetta, to remove the water marks.. you just dampen the magic eraser, lightly rub your vachetta evenly, the entire area, LET DRY, and then recondition with Apple brand leather conditioner, and wala! like new again :) I redo vintage LV bags and resell and I have brought blackened leather handles, absolutely filthy, up to a beautiful honey color using this method, works like a charm on the water marks, give it a try..
Yes!!! Macassar keepall bandouliere is def on my list of must haves. Completely stinks it happened to your "new to you" purchase but you'll love the Macassar so much I think.

I Just purchased my keep all 45 macassar and I love it, I was actually going to get the classic monogram but my biggest fear were the stains in the untreated leather. I just posted my video :)

You should spray Kiwi leather and water repellent when you just bought it.. I always spray mine and never had problems. I lived in Hawaii and everyday it rains or we have showers.. the red and white can bottle, it will not change the color.

Excellent informational video Shea!! You would be an awesome person to buy older bags or scraps and do videos on experiments. You know, using the apple guard and then putting some water on the vachetta, or taking a vintage bag and spraying with guard and wetting versus not using the apple guard and then wetting, etc. Give it some thought...you explain things very well and are fun to watch!!
I purchase the Apple Guard after I saw your video. I sprayed my new Artsy and Melie and the leather became spotted from the spray. Maybe I had a faulty nozzle and some random large droplets came out... I guess the upside is that it won't get worse in the rain.

BTW I always treat my vintage bags with the Apple care and then if they get wet do the below step.
Try taking a damp cloth or wipe and run across entire strap. Once it dries it should even out the water spots. I do this as soon as my vintage bag get wet and the stains go away. You can away test out an area under the trap first.

Water marks bother me too. I have a few on my delightful. Do you recommend Apple Guarde on a medium used bag? I have some patina and some water spots. Also after using the Apple Guarde can you carry the bag in the rain? Thank you!

is the apple guard spray the same as using the the Kiwi water protectant spray? there is so many threads on TPF on both of these products, i don't know which to use....thx!

Janet Tezcan, from the history of the LV pieces Louis Vuitton made the for travel bag when he was 16 years old. Travelers main sources of transportation was by horse and carriage, boat and train. With this in mind, they were meant to take a beating from placing them on the ground, withstanding the bad weather and squeezing them in small spaces. This is why the tough canvas leather was the choice to take a beating. In essence they were meant to get wet. They cost far too much to babysit them. Mine got wet while visiting New York this past Sunday in the rain Feb11, 2018, and it still looks great!
Gosh! I had the same issue on my keepall 55 B, vintage. Which i got it from Japan. Only used it twice. Water spilled on it, short story, the strap looks like its gonnna cracked with its dried out. Really bothered for quite sometime. I cant even look at it especially on the strap. Sold my keepall with MYR1700 or in usd 397. And yeah, i totally get how do u feels about it. 😙
So sorry this happened. I purchased a vintage Keepall 60 from the LV Addicted FB group, and I'm going to Appleguard the Bandouliere. I'll let you know how it works! I sent the Keepall to LV for vachetta replacement. Can't wait to get it back.

I think the strap looks great with the spots. Nice bag by the way. I have two genuine LV pieces and now thinking about luggage. What do you think about this bag when traveling in terms of it not having wheels? I wondered if I'd get tired of carrying it while traveling through airports.
clean the whole thing with saddle soap. I did that, all the watermarks were pretty much gone/blended in. If it absorbed the rain, it will also take in the cleaning moisture. give it a try :)

Shae I have a vintage speedy 35 thats 22 years old-I prob wouldn't do the apple guard spray. As I did the apple guard cleaner and conditioner and yes it cleaned and moisturized the vachetta i.e. The handles piping and the chads........but it did make it darker. More honey than it was. It's beautiful but it wasn't that dark when I first inherited it. So yes the vintage bags 20 years and up don't use anything on it the vintage leather does seem to absorb more. We prob shouldn't use anything on the new ones either......lol 😂😍❤️

I saw a comment that when u want to use apple garde products be very careful on the cleanser because she/ he noticed that too much of use of the cleanser... makes the bag darkened
However if ur bag is pristine condition u should just take a damp cloth, and clean ur bag gently , wipe it with dry cotton towel / microfiber towel wait 30 minutes... condition your bag wait 30 mins spray ur bag with repellant spray, it will avoid chipping and stain
Good point Shea! That’s probably bc of the soft vintage leather ... it’s terrible! I would totally get the damier ebene next time. If you have had sprayed it before with Apple guard do you think it might’ve helped?

I know I’m late to this video but I think they do sell straps online through LVs site. I’ve also had vachetta pieces treated with conditioner which darkens it but it’s uniform at least. I hope Everything turned out in your favor! :-)
If it would be of any consolation, I would say you're still very lucky. I got mine vintage and I believe took very good care of it but on our third trip using it, my husband heard a loud thud and the keepall fell to the ground. The leather loop broke and the metal loop was still attached to the claw. When we got home I noticed cracks on the leather where the buckles for the handle go through. I believe it would cost more to get everything repaired than get a new one. It's devastating for me.
bang g, If you're going to keep it and not have it repaired by LV, look into if Sugru can repair it enough so it's usable. Obviously that's might not look so good, depending on what happened. Just an option.

You can condition first and let it set for 24 hours. Then use 100% baby wipes without alcohol. Wipe it down and let it dry then condition witH Apple conditioner. It will help to remove and blend.
Water wipes and Cadillac leather conditioner evens it out. Gorgeous bag!
I just bought my daughter the 50 for her bridal shower gift. It has the vechatta handles and so many people are saying they ruined their straps from rain/water. I don't think it matters if it is old or new, these stain. I am considering returning it and getting the solid black handles. If you read this Shea, can you give me your opinion? I know this is an older video, but it has been helpful.

It's so weird that it happens to some bags and not others. I got caught in a torrential downpour with my pochette metis (which I never treated w/ any spray) and there is no damage. I did baby wipe it as soon as I got home so maybe that helped. I feel your pain...

Oh wow! Well that can definitely stinks. But if you really get irritated with it, you can take it to LV to replace parts.
I'm thinking if you're gunna sell it anyway, and the strap is already ruined, then spray the apple guard on the strap to see if it messes it up more or not?

I actually got the Apple Garde after seeing your video and I even used it on EPI leather bag, I now treat any leather bag with it. Thanks for your tips. I don't think it will turn it dark because I treated a vintage Mulberry bag with Apple Garde and it didn't change the color at all

I have a 31 year old vintage preloved LV bag and one day I was carrying it and it started raining. I had no way of covering it from the rain so when I got home I was so sad because I thought the watermarks would leave a permanent stain but for some reason it dried and there were gladly no marks left. so strange how yours stayed so apparent!

I bought a $700 Tumi and spilled a full tub on hummus in it the FIRST trip I used it.
Then let it sit for 2 days because I was unaware. It schmeared everywhere. Left shaded stains, not too bad but still stains. You are not alone.

Hi Shea! I just bought a Gucci Marmont Matelasse Handbag in white a few days ago. OMG! It’s my baby, I love it! Will this happen with the Gucci Marmont Matelasse in the Lambskin leather with the water marks or is that just more on the LV Vachetta leather? My Brand new Bre for $2800 got a watermark by the name stamp, it's there, in your face, one freaking drop of water. I'll never buy another LV again. WHY would you make a bag like that?
I know you’ve sold the bag, but just curious if you had a chance to use baby wipes (sensitive skin type version) to rub over the water stains (well the entire strap)❓If so, did it even out the stains so they weren’t as noticeable as rain drop spots❓
I have a Delightful in the MM size, and I've noticed that there are two "cracks" on where the bag folds when I carry it. The bag is 3-4 years old but I don't know if Louis Vuitton will be able to repair it or even replace it. Do you have any advice?

Fyi, I noticed, with one of my preloved LVs from Japan, that the seller had treated the vachetta with a product that covers water spots and stains. I noticed when I went to use my Loving My Bags products on the bag. The white towel that I used removed the coating and stained the towel a golden brown. Just letting you know because it's possible that those marks were there before but somehow covered up. Otherwise it makes no sense for vintage vachetta to mark like that from a little rain.
