Got a subject from those times for you, the retro games and scale illusion. Square was a master at this. World maps, town menus [front mission 3] mini world [racing lagoon] etc etc. With like 60 prerendered screens and a low poly 3d map they made us feel whole worlds
Thanks for taking the time to make this video! If you want to give Auto Modelista another try, make sure to get the European version. I don’t know why but the NTSC versions have horrible physics but the PAL version feels great!
I truly mean this, I think this channel scratches the best itch for me personally. You cover some of the most interesting aspects of video games that has fascinated me ever since i was young
You're so right about the early-mid 2000s being so creative. Just the perfect storm of powerful new (but limited) hardware and room for low budget titles still developed by experienced companies allowing developers to really explore.
Man, you don’t ever miss! These videos must take forever to make but I really appreciate them. Anytime I’m having an off day I can rewatch one of your videos and it always brings a smile. Killer work. I think these are up there with the work of John Linneman from digital foundry when he does his DF retro videos.
Really appreciate the kind words! Love to hear that our videos are able to help with that. They do take a long time to make for sure lol but seeing comments like this help make it worth it
Excellent video that will resonate to many people in their late 30's who played the hell out of those games when they came out. Okami was simply the most beautiful thing I had ever seen back in the day.
This is absolutely my favorite art style and has been since I was a kid & wanted to be a cartoonist and discovered Jet Set Radio Future when it came out on the OG Xbox alongside Sega GT. I also remember being so pumped for Wind Waker and then finding out people were against the game because of the art style and more hyped for a realistic rendition of Link. I never understood it. Ultimate Spider-Man was also my shit and literally brought me into my second fav hobby of comic books. I just love this art style. Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and so many others I played simply due to them having it. Even games like MGS 2 with their slight shading is dope or Katamari’s simplistic renders evoking it.
Sounds like you had good taste from a young age! Wind Waker aside I always enjoyed the style to some degree as a kid, but my appreciation has only grown over the years due to seeing how timeless it makes its games
2:51 I was the same age and, ironically, I LOVED it. 3:16 As for its sales. I mean, nearly 7 million is not bad for being on a system that only sold 22 million. That's rather fantastic, actually.
Same! I remember preordering just cause I was excited for it and having to have my dad cause a stink at Toys R Us cause the guy said I preordered before the Master Quest disc was announced. In the end he just turned around and grabbed one from a giant pile. After all these years I still can't believe the dude was so difficult to a child when they had so many. lol
Yeah that’s a fair point. If you’re comparing it to total number of GameCube sales then it sold well, but I guess that just brings up a larger problem with the GameCube just not selling that well in general. I guess I was more just referring to total game sales, in which Wind Waker is the second lowest mainline console entry release only behind Zelda 2 on the NES
Mega Man Legends as you say is not actually cell shaded. What they did is they used low resolution textures on the 3d models, which gave it that pixelated look. The shadows were baked into that texture, so the shadows on the characters didn't update in real time depending on the position of the sun for example. The end result of their approach though has obviously held up really well. Also, shout out for mentioning Musashi Samurai Legend. Most people prefer to talk about Brave Fencer Musashi, and MSL is certainly not the best game ever, but the visual style is great, and the soundtrack is excellent. It was composed by Hamauzu and Nakano who assisted on the FFX OST.
Yep the second Musashi game gets severely overlooked these days in favor of its predecessor. Like you said it’s not an amazing game, but it has some admirable qualities and is deserving to get brought up a bit more for the things it does right. We made an hour long retrospective over the first game last year, maybe we’ll do the same for MSL sometime in the future
JSR/F is still may favorite game to date. During the DC/PS2 era when cel-shading was new, I would buy any cel-shaded game, even if I didn’t like the genre.
Cel Shading is probably my favorite graphical-style, ngl. There's practically no game I can think of where I actually dislike the look, and they always age so much better than most other games. In the words of Todd Howard, it just works. Also, quite funny that you specifically brought up No More Heroes at 6:27 since my thoughts just before were literally "Oh, I guess they won't bring up NMH then" lol
It’s definitely a style I can always appreciate because I know it will age well visually. And yeah, maybe we’ll talk about NMH more in a future video lol
This was an absolute FEAST of nostalgic joy! So, so many games represented here that made my childhood memorable in the best ways. I cannot echo your sentiment enough: I miss experimental games (yes, even lackluster ones) with my whole heart. Sincerely hope that the industry changes soon so that we can bring back the odd and off-kilter instead of clinging to the marketable norm - and I say that as someone who literally does Marketing for a living!
Thank you, glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yeah totally agree though. Fortunately, where the AAA industry has been lacking the indies have been holding it down. There’s been a lot of really cool and creative and experimental indie games to come out in recent years across all kinds of genres!
Your videos are always so nostalgic. You have the ability to make me feel like we are stranged friends. A good topic for a video would be super deformed graphics. I mean, talking about Jackie Chan Stuntmaster and Legaia is always a good idea hahaha. And I hope someday you give Vigilante 8 some love!
Every single topic of yours is chef's kiss for me! Seriously, it's like this channel was designed specifically for me and my gaming tastes haha. Love you guys and your content - keep up the awesome work!
Yeah I’m not gonna lie the performance on this one has been real disappointing so far 😔 we thought this would be one of those topics that had the potential to really take off and get a lot of views so to see it flop and be one of our worst performing videos in years is a little defeating. Oh well, just part of the RUclips game I guess
Hell yeah, always excited for your videos. Wind waker is still one of the best looking games ever especially from that generation, and dq 8 is phenomenal looking. Keep up the great work and keep up the awesomeness
Not cel shaded specifically, but shout out to Threads Of Fate / DewPrism, which made extensive use of polygon vertex coloring (in lieu of a ton of textures). This leads to lots of solid colors with hard edges, giving a faux cel shaded look at times.
Yeah Threads of Fate had an awesome look that has aged well. Not sure if you saw it but our last video featured it as one of the games and talked a lot about it
Limitations force creative solutions. I honestly don’t think modern games will be remembered as fondly as those early 3D games that experimented with their art styles.
I used to watch X-Play back in the day but yeah looking back yeah they had some garbage takes. They seemed to hate anything that was overly cartoony or Japanese or had bright colors. They always dogged on JRPGs I remember
I do quite like these visuals, but I can't say I've played all that many games with them, in large part cuz the overwhelming majority of what I play is 2D
If you like the cel shading style but prefer 2D gameplay, I recommend checking out Viewtiful Joe and Klonoa 2. Both games play out in 2D while still keeping the cel shaded look
Lol I know, that was the point of the joke. It was supposed to be ironic that a 10 year old kid didn’t want a game aimed at him and instead wanted a darker game aimed for adults. That was a pretty common sentiment back then, a lot of kids were wanting to be edgy and cool and play mature games like GTA3 rather than something more bright and kiddy. It’s part of the reason why GTA3 sold more than double the copies than Wind Waker did
Coming back to watch this I realize so many people had a problem with Wind Waker's art style, not the fact that it was cel-shaded. I know loads of people who love JSR but are indifferent or don't like Wind Waker.

This channel continues to be one of the most underrated gaming channels. You continue to push on those chill vibes and focus on the positive aspects of games, something that's criminally needed in this age of ragebaiting grifters. Keep it up! As for the subject of the video, I always liked cell-shaded graphics and those who approached their graphics to be close to this style. They really age better than "realistic" graphics. I'm often the type to prioritize art direction over graphics anyway, something that's sorely missing in graphics quality over substance games. You have to manifest your artistic vision, even with lower quality graphics. I think that's why the indie market thrives despite being almost erased by the AAA industry.
Really appreciate those kind words, thank you! Just hoping things start turning the other way soon, we haven’t been getting a lot of love in the algorithm lately which has been a little discouraging but all part of the game I guess Definitely hear you there though. I’ve been big on indie games for the past couple years now due to everything you just said. Creativity and passion are really thriving over there
I wish Nintendo re-released Wind waker on the Switch. I wanted to reaplay that game so much. Auto Modellista is one of my biggest gaming disappointments. I got it for the cel-shading alone and the game was so bad and ran at 30 fps.
Thank you! That song was called Jam Jam Hype from the Go Go Hypergrind OST. The band that sings that song has a few others songs in the game as well. Forget the name of the band itself but it’s a super obscure Japanese pop punk band from around that time
When I was younger, I couldn't stand when games went with the cel-shaded look. Wind Waker, Borderlands, Smash Bros for 3DS... I thought they all looked cartoony and cheap garbage compared to their more realistic brethren But looking back at all the games that came out around the same time that had "better" graphics, these hold up significantly better (I guess Borderlands isnt cel-shaded, but I remember they had a different look for it when they first teased the game that I thought looked better)
Besides Wind Waker I did like most cel shaded games as a kid, but yeah I gotta say my appreciation for them has definitely grown over the years as I’ve seen how well they make those games hold up compared to their peers
@@GamingBroductions I probably should have watched the entire video before I commented. Didn’t realize what cel-shaded really meant. I think we both had the wrong idea before this video. At the very least I learned something new. Thanks bros
XIII (2003) was another noteworthy game in this era of cel shaded graphics. A very stylized shooter based on a graphic novel. Too bad the remake was horrible.
I do actually talk about that one for a bit! After Killer 7 but before Drake of the 99 Dragons. I never played the remake but yeah I heard it was a huge letdown, what a shame
Oh yeah I know that, DQVIII was the only Level 5 game to use his art style. I only mentioned that because Rogue Galaxy was their next game after DQVIII and I just wanted to say that even though the characters didn’t have the Toriyama style from their previous game due to him not working on this one they still looked really good
Windwaker aged better than literally any 3D Zelda game, and it's not even close. Now if only Nintendo would give us an official HD Remake on Switch/Switch 2...
I truly think this is one of the worst times to be a creative in modern history. Everything is just remakes, remasters and reboots all made to be "realistic". Originality in the AAA gaming industry and Major film is almost extinct.
It's getting better.... Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot, a lot of older AAA titles have faded. The only "old" franchises that are bigger now than before are Nintendo, Square Enix and Rockstar IP's Now small developers are taking in more of the spotlight. Also I'm not sure if you were around in the 90's, but there were A LOT less games back then. The number of AAA titles on Switch/PS5 is much higher than N64/PS1. Take away the top 10 N64 games and it's a pretty dead console.
It’s true for big studios cause no one wants to take a risk and lose. It’s so much easier to just recreate something that was already successful sadly. But like the other guy said, indie devs are the ones to look for now
Pretty sure this has always been the case. Nothing is original. You know Disney was riffing off of all kinds of classics in the 90s, right? Is Ocarina not just 3d ALttP? Mario been dropping the same game since the 80s on repeat. Only deviation from the formula, Sunshine, was panned. Same with Wind Waker. ET on the Atari was the movie rip off cash grab you didnt even know about. Just expand your damn horizons. There are so many good games that came out in the past decade its not even funny. Yeah, Bungie sucks now. Bethesda, Bioware, Ubisoft, EA, Nintendo all suck. The new Zelda, Madden, 2K, COD all suck. Buy from someone better and we would get more creativity. Mindlessly drool and shell out $100 for the next creatively bankrupt series 20 games deep and you will reinforce their decision making.
That's the decade prior, 90's was the most creative era in Video games. 00's were creative people trying to do something different. Wind Waker is different, not necessarily better. However Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask were different and better.
Yeah, the performance on this one so far has been pretty disappointing not gonna lie 😔 we thought this would be one of those topics that would have the potential to really take off and get a lot of views
Upvote for dunking on Rascal....just one of the worst games of all time. Also Monster Rancher fans unite. Dx was a great re entry and Ultra Kaiju is a random bit of fun as well. Love me many a cell shaded game. Viewtiful Joe is amazing and under appreciated today. Wild Arms 3, Dark Cloud 2 and DQ8 were where I really locked in my love for the art style.
Hell yeah, love seeing more Monster Rancher fans out in the wild. I played DX earlier this year and finally beat MR2 for the first time, learning how to optimize items and training strategies was a game changer
It’s called Jazzy Night by Richie Branson but unfortunately I don’t know if it can be found online anymore as I think he took it down, he let fans download a lot of his old unused beats awhile ago which is how I got it in the first place
I always thought it was too but technically it’s not due to how the shading works. The cartoony look and thick black outlines make it resemble the style a lot though
People hated the cel-shaded Zelda back then....meanwhile I'm here to point out that it's the level design in the game that is trash. I've tried playing that game several times and I always get bored. The dungeons in the game are thankless, just like Skyward Sword. But I love the design!
Bro your opinion of auto modellista controls are kinda lacking. literally the games mix of arcade and realism through weight distribution, front wheel, back wheel drive, manual/stick etc are extremely good mechanically. You have to go back and dig deeper into the mechanics. What your talking about is the representation of speed which the game sames to lack based on the cel shaded style.
Which version did you play? Based on some other comments, it seems that the EU version handled really well and is based on the original Japanese version but the US version handled rather poorly which is the one I played
I still don't like the artstyle in Windwaker. Wasn't even the only issue with the game, while not terrible i still rank it at the very bottom of all Zelda games.
The visual style is my favorite part, but I think as an overall game it does fall short in many areas. Way too much sailing, not enough dungeons and the triforce quest near the end of the game just sucked

Love to hear that. I’ve always like showing appreciation to the little things in gaming that don’t get talked about as much
I love the cel shaded art style. Wind Waker is still one of my favourite games ever.
I didn’t finally beat Wind Waker til many years later in college but yeah it’s an excellent game
@@GamingBroductions The Triforce chart quest really puts a damper on the game, admittedly.

All the Level 5 games look spectacular. They’ve always nailed it in the presentation department
I feel like HD 2D is the new cel shad aha
It has been a prominent style lately for sure
JSR/F is still may favorite game to date.

The style definitely came in hot during that era and left its mark on the industry for sure

You have to manifest your artistic vision, even with lower quality graphics. I think that's why the indie market thrives despite being almost erased by the AAA industry.
Really appreciate those kind words, thank you! Just hoping things start turning the other way soon, we haven’t been getting a lot of love in the algorithm lately which has been a little discouraging but all part of the game I guess
Definitely hear you there though.
Yeah I heard the EU version and original Japanese version handle fine, it’s just the US version which controls really poorly which is a shame to see
Great video. Very nostalgic. Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing when the Go Go Hypergrind footage was playing?
Thank you! That song was called Jam Jam Hype from the Go Go Hypergrind OST. The band that sings that song has a few others songs in the game as well. Forget the name of the band itself but it’s a super obscure Japanese pop punk band from around that time
@@GamingBroductions Thanks for the info. Will definitely check out the games soundtrack
Hell yeah
You didn't mention the little fingerboard you got with yanyan caballista to put on the thumbsticks while you play 😂
Yeah I probably should have at least mentioned that, that’s like one of the most early 2000s things a game could ever do lol
When I was younger, I couldn't stand when games went with the cel-shaded look.
Wind Waker, Borderlands, Smash Bros for 3DS... I thought they all looked cartoony and cheap garbage compared to their more realistic brethren
But looking back at all the games that came out around the same time that had "better" graphics, these hold up significantly better
(I guess Borderlands isnt cel-shaded, but I remember they had a different look for it when they first teased the game that I thought looked better)
Thanks bros
3:31 receptive huh? 😂
XIII (2003) was another noteworthy game in this era of cel shaded graphics. A very stylized shooter based on a graphic novel. Too bad the remake was horrible.
I do actually talk about that one for a bit! After Killer 7 but before Drake of the 99 Dragons. I never played the remake but yeah I heard it was a huge letdown, what a shame
what the hell I always thought it was CELL shading
Toriama was the Dragon Quest/Dragon Ball designer. He didn’t work for Level 5. That’s why he didn’t design Rogue Galaxy.
From a visual standpoint I would agree for sure. When it comes to an overall game though I do prefer some others in the series
3:29 true😂
I truly think this is one of the worst times to be a creative in modern history. Everything is just remakes, remasters and reboots all made to be "realistic". Originality in the AAA gaming industry and Major film is almost extinct.
It's getting better....
Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot, a lot of older AAA titles have faded.
The only "old" franchises that are bigger now than before are Nintendo, Square Enix and Rockstar IP's
Now small developers are taking in more of the spotlight.
But like the other guy said, indie devs are the ones to look for now
That is really dramatic lol
Go indie bb
Ahh back when companies were creative with limited resources, leading to one of the most timeless designs in gaming.
That's the decade prior, 90's was the most creative era in Video games. 00's were creative people trying to do something different.
Wind Waker is different, not necessarily better. However Ocarina of Time/Majora's Mask were different and better.
@@michaelp4122 Agree to disagree!
Wacky Races walked so Jet Set Radio could...walk faster.
Or so Jet Set Radio could grind
💥
Who remembers Taz Wanted?
Just had to look this one up and man those are some vibrant ass graphics! It’s got a very charming style
XIII Mentioned ❤🎉🎉 wooooooo
My boy gungrave got no love?😮
Never played that one but the style does look really cool. I’ll have to check it out in the future
Musashi Fans Here
Love me some Musashi
@@GamingBroductions I hope SE revive this IP, remake/remaster the first one enough for me
3k views?! What the heck.
@@GamingBroductions LegendCup putting all the community info in one place helped so much. So many items had unintelligible translations lol.
Nope, I wasn't a bi.tch. Windwaker always appealed to me, the game was magnificent.
Sadly I was back in the day
holy shit, not about JRPG's! you guys are growing up. love it!
Still definitely wanna talk about JRPGs in the future but yeah it’s fun to switch it up and cover other genres sometimes!
Where can I find your theme song??
It’s called Jazzy Night by Richie Branson but unfortunately I don’t know if it can be found online anymore as I think he took it down, he let fans download a lot of his old unused beats awhile ago which is how I got it in the first place
What game is the guy from (15:48) from?
One of the Fear Effect games on the PS1, forget which ones exactly off the top of my head
wait borderlands isn't cel shaded?
I always thought it was too but technically it’s not due to how the shading works. The cartoony look and thick black outlines make it resemble the style a lot though
@@GamingBroductions yea when i watched further in the video i started to realize why it wasn't but it had me fooled. great video tho
People hated the cel-shaded Zelda back then....meanwhile I'm here to point out that it's the level design in the game that is trash. I've tried playing that game several times and I always get bored. The dungeons in the game are thankless, just like Skyward Sword. But I love the design!
10:38 NOR the Breath of Fire series...sadly.
Unfortunately true…
Game name at 25:12?
Crimson Tears
@@GamingBroductions may god bless you with a beautiful wife and children 🙏
..Borderlands is cel shaded... there's just also textures.
Way too much sailing, not enough dungeons and the triforce quest near the end of the game just sucked
doom eternal is the best cel shaded
That game does kick ass
First for once
