absolute banger of a series. the ps2 library is such a deep well of interesting games

Honestly, the best part about the PS2 is the obscure game library. There is always just that one game that was released for the console that is incredibly unique, that would've been praised if it was released today, yet nobody ever even knew that it ever existed. I wish I could say that the PS5 library is this unique, alas it's just full of PS4 games, and shovelware :/

      @fearedjames 5 месяцев назад +11

The PS2 basically was that perfect narrow period where games were capable of being interesting while still being insanely cheap. Most dev teams from this period would be considered small indies now, so you had that creativity on a much more organized and higher budget position, with much lower expectations.

@@fearedjamesMore than that, they were developing for, to this day, the bestselling console of all time, with only the DS coming within a country mile. So, even moreso than the PS1, PS2 devs got decent funding VERY easily. The last piece of the puzzle, and what separates it most from the state of the industry today, is that while it became insanely popular, it didn't so so by appealing to the casual market. It wasn't until a few years later when the Wii/DS marketed to straight up non-gamers that the industry became irrevocably casual-focused. The "average gamer" was always a concern since the very beginning, but it wasn't until the 7th gen that the lowest-common-denomimator approach really began.
So the PS2 benefitted from teams with incredible creative control, massive budgets for the time, and the largest install base ever, without being beholden to mass-appeal approach. It's no wonder this is when so many beloved studios had their "experimental" titles, and entire "experimental" studios cut their teeth. It really was something special.
Also this is totally just an opinion, but I think PS2 is peak video game graphics - especially when a developer can really get the emotion engine's individual subprocessors working in harmony, some late PS2 games could actually outperform some of the early PS3/360 titles, especially as devs struggled to grasp the PS3's architecture (which made the EE look like easy mode).
I dare anyone to play Valkyrie Profile 2 on hardware (or sufficiently configured emulator on a powerful rig), run through a CRT, and deny it's one of the most visually stunning games ever, not in spite of, but _because of_ the limited resolution. It, and many games like it, are great examples of why resolution isn't everything - hell, why lower resolutions can be better in many circumstances. Same with aspect ratio; widescreen isn't better by virtue of being wider.
Anyway, I rambled on longer than I meant to lol but I think you get my point. The PS2, even within its own generation was a perfect storm of circumstances that can never again be recreated

Yo, I originally followed you simply because you were a Persona guy (really appreciate the compendium, as you can imagine)
But I'm a much bigger fan of the common ground of love for the best selling video game console and the works it brought to us. Not all these games are for me, not even close, but when you drop something like Sub Rebellion and I'm suddenly opening CDRomance in a new tab, it's a video well spent. Kudos, brother.

Seven Samurai 20XX was such a disastrous game to actually play -- it felt like it promised so much, but the actual game was such a mess. I poured hours into it, convinced there was more to it that I just wasn't getting. There wasn't.
And yet, 20 years later, I still think about it all the time.

I picked up Sub Rebellion years ago but didn't play much of it. Thanks for reminding me about it. Now's the time to dust the old PS2 off. If you're looking for a similar game, Treasures of the Deep for PS1 was a long-time favourite of mine.

  • @SirtakiMaster

Wow, I won't take this Maze Action slander! It's one of my favorite games!
So first of all it's not someones first attempt at making a game, it's actually a (spiritual) sequel to "THE 迷路" (The Maze) on the PSX. And secound, there are five playable characters not four. So you exposed yourself as a fraud from the very beginning by proving, that you neither did research on the game nor completed it 100%.
The gameplay is actually very deep with mechanics like punishing combos if you block them. In tournaments the map has to be hidden so you also have to remember the layout of the maze. Seems like you already figured out the "put your key down at the exit portal" tech and the pause glitch. Great Job! Keep in mind that when you pause the game your opponent completly freezes but you can still finish the animation that you started. Gives you some advantage in melee combat. Only works in the PAL version though.
Anyway, looks like you're well on your way to become a pro Maze Action player.
"There is nothing wrong with a bit of Maze Action every now and then, it's good for you!" Wow, now you're speaking my language! I'm sorry for calling you a fraud earlier, with that attitude you might even become the next Meiro King!

Considering the connection via Irem and certain visual design elements you can consider Sub Rebellion a spin-off from In the Hunt which explains why the game is so much better than you would expect it to be amidst the usual bargain bin suspects. Though, I suppose these days you don't even find games of this quality in the bargain bin.

I’ve been trying to remember a ps2 game from my childhood for years. It’s a top down rpg with multiple races, one is a lizard like people I believe. There are mostly jungle environments in my memory. I breezed through the game and got stuck at the final boss. It’s very hack and slashy but it was fun. I can’t remember anything else about it. I wish I knew the name.

Always wanted to play macros game. I tried Robotech Battle cry or whatever the gamecube one was, but remember it started to feel stale early on. I was curious about the crossover one for ps3, the dreamcast following Max, Millia, and there daughter, and frontiers PSP one, but couldn't find an English patch. I will just have to finda guide and give the games a try.

I miss the 2000s so bad. You never knew what you were going to find in a games or rental shop. Walls filled with mysterious games you'd try on the box art alone. Felt like Japanese devs trying so hard made everyone raise their game. Ironically I think Japan is again showing the way today, focusing on fun than cynical western developers.
