Mr Beat: "the craic" is an Irish phrase relating to fun and good times. Or, and you should appreciate this one, satisfying one's curiosity with learning.

A Long Long Way is an excellent novel by Sebastian Barry about the Easter Rising. I highly recommend it for its grit, realism and it’s compassionate depiction of human suffering.

Nice job summing up something so complicated! Great channel, liked and subbed. We were living in Dublin in 2016 and at the time I did a lot of video work on the centenary celebrations... Discovered an amazing story about the very house we lived in: In 1916 our house was the home of the family Edward Dunphy, a member of the Royal Constabulary who was on duty in the GPO the morning of April 24, 1916. When the rising took place he was taken prisoner by Michael Collins and detained from Easter Monday to Easter Thursday when he was released by The O'Rahilly (who disobeyed James Connolly's order to execute prisoners). Constable Dunphy ran from the GPO to Moore St, where he was shot by Volunteers, but survived! So many amazing small stories in the greater context of history.

Yes I had heard that story before about James Connolly's order to executed Edward Dunphy, but I would love to know the provenance of that where that story originated, do you happen to know? Sounds most unlike Connolly and Michael O'Rahilly was such an honourable man there was no way he would have done that anyway. Thanks.

The Irish-German connection is always touted to brand the Irish as traitors or Nazis even..even you spent a few sentences here on it followed by you yourself saying 'only a few dozen signed up' while barely mentioning the 200,000 fighting in WW1 and the 35,000 Irishmen who died fighting the Germans.

They were traitors. Ireland was barred from the UN for ten years for that reason. The Irish fascist government even sent condolences to the Nazi government on the death of Hitler. The only "neutral" country to do so. Their limited cooperation with Britain can be explained by their dependence on British trade and fear of invasion. Their leaders congratulated the Nazis for their treatment of Jewish civilians in their parliament.

Worst part is most of the victims were innocent people. The song "Zombie" by the Cranberrys was about the 1993 truck bomb in London that killed an innocent 3 year old British boy. It reached a point where the Irish people of North Ireland and Republic of Ireland had enough of innocent people being killed and signed the 1998 good Friday accords
