- Gastritis Overview: Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining that can be caused by various factors, including H. pylori infection and stress.
Common Symptoms: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and bloating are common symptoms of gastritis.
Stomach Pain: The most common symptom, often occurring just below the ribcage and relieved by food.
Nausea and Vomiting: Nausea can occur with or without vomiting and is often present throughout the day.
Bloating: Caused by slow gastric emptying and increased gas production, leading to a feeling of fullness and frequent belching.
Main Causes: H. pylori infection, regular use of NSAIDs, frequent alcohol consumption, stress, and certain foods like spicy and acidic items.
Autoimmune Gastritis: Sometimes caused by an autoimmune process leading to pernicious anemia, characterized by B12 deficiency.
Diagnosis: Definitive diagnosis is made through endoscopy, and a urea breath test can detect H. pylori infection.
Triple Therapy: Common treatment involves a triple regimen of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor for two weeks.
Antacids and Cytoprotective Agents: Medications like ranitidine, famotidine, sucralfate, and misoprostol can help reduce stomach acid and protect the stomach lining.
Dietary Adjustments: Reducing high-fat foods, spicy and acidic foods, processed meats, carbonated drinks, and chocolate can help manage symptoms.
Stress Management: Practices like meditation, yoga, and exercise can reduce stress, which is a contributing factor to gastritis.
Favorable Foods: Oatmeal, bananas, lean poultry, yogurt, and vegetables are recommended for gastritis sufferers.
Supplements: Probiotics, B12 supplements, omega-3 fatty acids, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL), and glutamine can support gut health and alleviate symptoms.
Risk of Stomach Cancer: Chronic gastritis, especially due to H. pylori infection or autoimmune causes, increases the risk of developing stomach cancer, even in asymptomatic cases.
