This fortress looks like a concrete hybrid of ship weaponary and style. You have the airfield of an aircraft carrier, the armament of a battleship and the broadside of an old galeon, but ironicially no harbor.
Really awesome! Three things though: Germans wouldn't attack without air support (would mean a cool air battle overhead), tanks in defensive positions would be hull-down with revetting (putting them on mounds is the worst idea because they're vulnerable), and casemates would be better protected rather than open arches.
German air support was unavailable. Good points on the other two. This was really fun to watch. Why were there stairs up into the fortress? Still, its a better designed than Eben-Emael.
This would occur in a night time scenario. A great assault would be a ridiculous amount of fallschirmjäger drop in right after and i mean as best/fast as you can after a vicious artillery barrage, to catch them off guard. When its time after the fight is on within the compound it would create less firepower on the perimeter as less hands on deck to fire those heavy cannons that are defending the fort. And idk blow the entrance open it but get it open and send in the support. Main objective. The fallschirmjäger would fuck them up most likely they probably wouldnt even need support to be honest.
Not to mention that the germans would most likely also use artillery. heck, in this case, because this is such a megafortress, they would probably try to get a railway gun like the Gustav there as well.
Canada: Hey America? What u do'in tomorrow? USA: meh, not much, just gonna defend the south from German invasion... Canada: okay, I'll be spectating 0:00

This is just like a game of HOI4 that I had. I was playing as Germany and had already defeated Britain and France, but was unable to do so before the United States declared war on me. I ended up encircling more than a million US troops in Britain, before then pushing across the Atlantic and attempting an amphibious invasion of the mainland US. I used both Greenland and Cuba as staging grounds, and eventually managed to gain a foothold in Massachusetts and Florida. What followed was a brutal and grinding stalemate that lasted from 1943 to 1948, where both the FDR player and I threw endless infantry divisions and late war heavy tanks at each other, until I eventually gained air superiority and dropped about a hundred atomic bombs across the eastern seaboard, which finally allowed my Maus tanks to roll into the Midwest. Both the US and Canada went into territorial freefall at that point, but by the time my army group reached the pacific coast, Germany was blead dry of manpower, even with my conscription policy on "Scraping the Barrel". Then ai Mussolini robbed me at the peace deal.
If you can't push through lines with maus tanks you're definitely doing something wrong. Also possibly the only hoi4 player that played past 45 when everything is already conquered.
@@taserrr Have you ever invaded the United States in Hoi4? The Maus will only do so much good against a thousand 40-width Infantry Divisions and Level 10 forts.
@@jonwoodhouse1444 Yes plenty of times and it's usually one of the easier things. The tricky part is getting your invasion to land but if you took over the UK and have canada control it's easy to push among the north side. Also 1 proper maus division can easily push 5 infantry divisions.
@@taserrr The USA declared war on me before the UK capitulated, so no peace deal insued and Canada remained independent. Anyway, you're clearly a lot more skilled at Hoi4 than I am if you define invading America as easy.

HOW TO KNOCK OUT A FORTRESS German warfare in particular dealt with some very strong fortresses. There were the Belgian Forts at EbenEmael which were stormed by a combined force of Paratroopers, army engineers (Pioniere) and Infantry in Landing gliders. The other and probably biggest fort knocked out was Sewastopol at the Krim Peninsula a Red Army and Black-Sea fleet stronghold. It was gunned down by massive railway guns set up over a mere distance between 40 and 25km hammering the forts with shells of more than a metric ton. This was then assisted by still heavy artillery up to 30cm down to 25cm from a distance of some 5-10km while closing in. Then they set up field artillery and howitzers in a 2-5km radius and get their tanks and infantry ready to storm the breaches. The also made sure the Fort was cut off from supply. Massive Bombings and Stuka Raids were mostly used to decrease the toughness and mindset of the enclosed forces. Occasionally it also would have involved shelling from seaside. Only after main defenses were broken the Infantry especially Jäger troops (comparabel to army rangers) and engineers with Flamethrowers would be sent in to clean up the site. Panzer Grenadiers would secure the streets, and occasionally shell houses with nests of resistant within. This minimizing the attackers casualties, yet maximizing the loss of enemy forces and material. This kind of long range Artillery warfare was directly inspired by WW1 battles involving all sorts of artillery, especially Gen. Staff officers as well as field officers who already fought the great war were familiar and trained in the use of massive artillery warfare. One other and effective way would have been to shell the place with gas grenades (which by WW2 was personally prohibited to german forces by Hitler as he still remebered the traumatizing gas Attacks on western Front from soldiers perspective). Yet, it is for sure a secure way to shell a fortress. Modern warfare has developed bunker buster Bombs, which are cheaper and equally effective than heavy train artillery provides.
