    As someone who got rid of a lot of clothes through the years, don’t beat yourself up for wanting to keep things. The most sustainable thing you can do in the end is keep your clothes and wear them for a long time.

    I absolutely love decluttering/organisational content and would eagerly watch a book clearout, etc.!
    I just want to mention, and you probably know this already, but just in case, and for anyone reading this who may be inspired to do their own change -- there is a big, *big* difference between "I have X amount of stuff and it's stressing me out, I don't even like most of it" and "I have X amount of stuff that minimalist youtube has arbitrarily decided is Too Much". Like, it is entirely possible to have lots of clothes and regularly wear all of them and get lots of joy from the variety! Similarly, it is possible to have the barest minimum of clothes and *that* bringing you joy and fitting your lifetyle! But if you already have a lot of clothes and want to buy fewer going forward, there's nothing inherently good or bad about keeping the existing ones *or* giving them away. As much as I love the awareness the minimalism side of social media has increased re: intentionality and conscious living, I do think there is a tendency to glorify getting rid of stuff, whereas, like, in reality it's perfectly fine to keep stuff, if you want it in your life! Less is not better, especially if you're inexperienced with saying goodbye to things and may reget getting rid of them and then buy new things to fill a need you didn't realize they were filling! Don't let society pressure you into some arbitrary goal of minimalism! Just do what works for you!
    (And just like Melanie, I also believe in keeping clothes you've accumulated in sizes above and below your current size -- I can't express how annoying and difficult it is to come up with a whole new wardrobe on the spot when you've unexpectedly changed sizes and nothing fits right and you don't know how long you're gonna be that weight so you don't know how much money you're willing to spend but you definitely need something to wear, now, like you literally don't have a single item that fits!
    I like to keep a variety of sizes on hand for such emergencies, but, importantly, not in the closet. The closet should be a space for easy access and overview of things that are ready to wear right now and you feel good in. So unless you like using the bigger items as oversize or something, go get a vacuum bag, put it under your bed/in the attic/wherever is hidden away but still easily accessible, and let those clothes wait for a rainy day. If and when it comes, it'll be like you have a whole new wardrobe again!)

      @@melaniemurphyofficial Yay! I'm glad. It seemed like you were generally aware of all this, but it also seemed like you were at times getting frustrated over not getting rid of 'enough' things even though the items you kept were clearly bringing you joy, even if they were novelties (like the nipple jumper). So I just wanted to reinforce the 'whatever-works-for-you' mentality, and like, if you have the storage space, who cares? 👍

      I dont keep clothes in various sizes because i know i am not the person that will actually really try to lose enough weight that i will need new pants.I just choose to find on purpose things that are a tiny bit bigger than my body currently so they can fit my belly throughout the day depending on how bloated i am or not and when/if i need to buy bigger clothes i will buy them then.
      It also helps that i basically have very few pieces(around 5 usually) of clothes for outside for my bottom body of each kind so i dont have to replace many pieces whenever i have.

    Omg the most honest declutter I’ve ever seen. Love that you’re not pulling any punches :)
    I also think it’s insane that we’re all supposed to magically be the same size and/ or shape forever -or is it that we’re supposed to source a whole new wardrobe if that changes?. I don’t change that much but I do keep a few things back for “life cycle” (like if they have been my absolute fave in the past but aren’t quite sitting right in the moment). I have totally seen those things come back around and be favorites again. And prioritizing things that have a little space to shift, of course.

    Part of my issue with living with too many clothes and buying too many clothes, as a plus size woman, when we do find awesome clothes that are made for us and that we actually feel GOOD in, I personally tend to snap them up because I have this scarcity mentality from when I was younger and there were a Lot less fashionable plus size options than there are now. I also tend to keep large stockpiles of clothes because my weight tends to fluctuate and so I don't want to constantly be buying smaller clothes then bigger clothes again, over and over. I 100% agree with buying more sustainable clothes if you are able, but many of those brands often don't have inclusive sizing or if they do, they price UP plus size clothing so its more expensive to buy the larger sizes. Just my two cents from a different size category. Love you, and so happy for your new adventure in your own home!!

    I think the root of the problem is overconsumption, as you said buying from fast fashion isn’t inherently bad if it’s all you can afford, especially for things like underwear. It’s tricky tbh, but minimalism (owning what you love and use) and capsule wardrobe is the way to go imo.

    Looved this, and love the attitude towards fashion!! Just wanted to point out: If Reformation makes that much stuff in shit fabric, then it's not really that sustainable. Quality and wearibility is such a key factor in sustainability. Also, seems like they produce a lot of clothes, which isn't great either. Haven't really researched them that much, but really hope their not just green washing!

    • @dawnforlife

    • @abcdefgold
      @abcdefgold 3 года назад +8

      the main issue seemed to be that it wrinkled - if a fabric wrinkles does that automatically mean it's less sustainable/lower quality? Linen wrinkles a lot

    • @Abbierose100
      @Abbierose100 3 года назад +9

      @@abcdefgold if the fact that it wrinkles easily stops you from wearing it then I would say that's less sustainable. Not necessary poor quality but ultimately if you never wear it or end up getting rid of it then it isn't a sustainable item of clothing. Personally I never buy linen because I know I don't like the maintenance of it and I'll favour other clothing over it in my wardrobe.

    • @abcdefgold
      @abcdefgold 3 года назад +2

      @@Abbierose100 I think then that's more down to the person - if you buy a skirt that you feel uncomfortable with, the actual skirt might be made of sustainable materials/second hand, etc. but obviously if you don't like wearing it so you eventually sell it on/donate it - that's no sustainable. But it's not the skirt's fault lol. I don't have anything from reformation, but I do have clothing in a similar fabric, it just needs a tiny bit more tlc

    • @sosos4306
      @sosos4306 3 года назад +2

      That's the main reason I haven't bought anything from them yet - love their designs but many reviews say that the fabric isn't the nicest. To me that's not worth it for the price then. But I could see how you would still wear them a lot if they're great fitting and looking
      If anyone knows a similar brand that's sustainable and preferably based in Europe, pls tell me :)

    I think something that's important to be aware of and acknowledge is that this style of overconsumption isn't common in all countries/communities. It's more prevalent in richer countries and people from certain socioeconomic backgrounds. I grew up in a South Asian country, where we would buy cloth at the clothing market, take it to the tailor and get it stitched into our clothing - we wouldn't overbuy, the people involved in the production of the clothing were fairly compensated, and rewearing is so natural to us that I was so confused when I'd watch white vloggers like Zoella do massive hauls every few weeks and talk about how they don't rewear things.
    As the fast fashion industry and Western capitalism has been influencing my country more and more, we have also had an increase in brands from Europe and America opening branches here and our own stores developing along the fast fashion model as well, leading to a rise in consumption which the generations after me are now growing up with, but I did not and I am just in my mid-twenties.
    What I'm trying to say is, sustainability and moderate consumption is something that communities from postcolonial countries, indigenous communities, and working class communities have always done, and I think it is important for white content creators who discuss these issues to learn about and discuss as well while reflecting on their own experiences, which are valid too. Otherwise the discussion feels somewhat incomplete.

    Please dont so hard on yourself. I also lives in a country that can have all the seasons in one day, its hard to have that truly minimal wardrobe. I had to give myself grace and understand that I need a bit more than those who live in a climate that remains mostly the same. If that item makes me happy then a keep it! Also parting with some where hard. I packed some away for a bit to see if I missed them which helped alot.

Sometimes I keep clothes thinking I’m gonna wear them, then a couples of months later I do another declutter and I notice I didn’t wear them, so that’s when I know I gotta rid of them! Most of the times I find myself thinking “how did this pass the last declutter???”

    I've repurposed a lot of guilty pleasure / emotionally triggering items that no longer serve myself TODAY. One way I've helped release that emotional attachment is by designating a spot for my "giveaway/donate" pile and then I compartmentalize those items further into cute pineapple baskets from Target.
    This way the next time my friend or family member comes over, I can give them their "box" to look through and take whatever they want! And if they want to borrow something I actually use/wear, I get to play Barbie dress up with my friends and they return it after they've worn & washed my clothes! Everything else gets intentionally donated to my local homeless shelter. Win-Win-Win 🏆

    Decluttering got so easy for me when I finally did my color season analysis. I suddenly realized why I felt I looked severe and sad in my clothing instead of light and joyful, which is way more my personality. Turns out I had a lot of navy and burgundy clothing, whereas I love pinks, yellows, oranges in decor and such. Turns out they look way better on me, too! So I donated everything that didn’t suit my colors anymore, except for some darker jeans that I can wear for instance whilst doing chores. Of course you can keep clothes that are outside your color season, if they spark joy / have a use in your life. For me though, they didn’t. Now I have a closet full of clothes that match my skintone & I feel happy looking at & wearing them. I even feel happy looking at those clothes in my colors from years/seasons ago; I didn’t feel like that before I knew my colors!
    Same thing for some basic shapes: I need a defined waist, high waisted bottoms, and I need to pay attention to the neckline of shirts and dresses (V-shape flatters me most). Knowing what flatters me has helped so much! And, sustainability-wise: I don’t get bored of my clothes anymore this way.
    Tip: look into materials that aren’t prone to creasing. I have a few Topvintage dresses that require no ironing, they always look perfect. Same for some Ralph Lauren no-iron button-ups.

Also I’ve gotten two absolutely lovely coach purses from my mom but other than that what exactly are you thinking you’ll pass on to your kids? Is it super high quality and classic or incredibly cool? I generally know my style now and I always make sure to try the things on before giving them away. In my early twenties I was still figuring out my style so a lot of the things I only wore once, didn't feel like myself in them and than never wore again. I tend to gravitate towards classic shapes with a little bit of an interesting element on them- ruffle, floral print, polka dots etc. There was a top that I give away last month which I really liked but it was too small for me in the bust and I didn't wear it for that reason in three years now. I feel like if I really want something like that I will manage to find it. Also, I don't get attached emotionally to clothes so that makes is easier.

      Also, I want to add that I really like wearing the hell out my clothes so keeping something for my kids doesn't really make sense for me. If I love it, I will wear it every day. I prefer having like one pair of boots, one winter coat but nice quality and to wear them to 5 to 10 years. I just decluttered my wardrobe and I can finally get in it without things falling out! I’d definitely fallen into the trap of knowing things are sustainable so thinking it’s okay to buy a lot of them - I’ve gone from 6 pairs of Lucy and Yak trousers to 4 and 5 pairs of dungarees to 4. I feel a lot lighter for it and I sold them so i know I’m passing them on to people who’ll use them, instead of them sitting in my wardrobe! This was a great video!

    Hey Mel, love your channel!
    I really connect with what you said about keeping cloth even when it's not your current size.
    I enjoy watching decluttering videos, but I think it is important to remember not to overdo this.
    Decluttering got so trendy there is channels with loads decluttering videos, then hauls. They throw a lot of cloths only to buy new ones.

    A few tips, have a separate area in your wardrobe for maternity clothes and clothes linked to memories so that when you're getting dressed you're only looking at clothes you will actually wear. I understand wanting to keep clothes with special memories attached but if you have the photos to spark the same memories then try and detach the memory from the item and it may be easier to get rid of.

    Buying our way to bliss.... that is what I've been trying to put into words. I'm also trying to reduce the amount I spend, consume and hoard. Each time I crave to buy something, I'm trying to ask myself what problem I'm trying to solve, or how I'm trying to make myself feel.

    Unrelated but Little Pan constantly slapping your chest is TOO cute 😆 Love that you are going that direction! Just remember, if you LOVE something, the most sustainable way is to keep them and wear them! 😊 It looks sooo overwhelming! I recently just did an ONLY pants declutter and I already don't own much! You did so well! ❤ I would have been paralysed looking at that pile! 😅

    Looking at the fabric quality of your Reformation Dresses (thanks for pointing this out) I remembered a little epiphany I've had last year.
    My husband and I went on a little summer holiday to Austria, and I remember sitting around a plaza in Salzburg on my own for an hour, just watching people walking by and very consciously taking in the things they were wearing.
    That's when it really dawned on me how (and I don't mean this in a judgemental sort of way) unflattering, ill fitted and low quality clothes have become, and how much havoc fast fashion must be wrecking. How thin and creasey fabrics are these days, how see through dresses and tops have become, how badly they react to washing and folding, how almost 90% of all clothes items seem to be modelled to a 12 year old body, never taking into account the different shapes of so many beautiful bodies. They just seem to make them bigger, and that's about it.
    The clothes I get sick of extremely quickly are items with thin fabrics which crease super easily. The ones you pull out of a folded pile and would have to iron for an hour to make them look acceptable, until you sit down in them and have to start all over again.
    Basically any typical TOPSHOP/H&M/Zara summer dress, top or skirt.
    It's such a shame, and I wish we could somehow revert back to have nicely shaped clothes which last for decades, don't go out of fashion so quickly and have much of a Ted Baker fabric than a Reformation one (not shaming Reformation here, but obviously the fabric also dictates how long you're happy to wear and keep a piece of clothing).
