I just acquired a lightly used Z840 from my employer. It already had dual Xeon E5-2620 2.4 GHz processors and 32gb of ram, but I upgraded it to 128gb of RAM and installed 4 - 16tb Seagate IronWolf Pro HDDs in a RAID 1+0. I am using it as a Plex media server and it's running great. It is nearly silent (except for the HDDs during writes) and it runs very cool. Overall, I'm super impressed with this workstation.
HOW MUCH AND THEN, HOW MUCH MORE??
@@josephbohme7917 The workstation was a retired unit from my employer and was totally free. The RAM upgrade was taken from other decommissioned workstations for free. Subsequently, I spent $1300 for Seagate drives, $375 for graphics card, $200 for 2 used HP Z Cooler upgrade and $100 for upgraded hard drive cooling,... so about $2000 total, which is a bargain for a setup like this.
The HP Z series ARE THE BEST KEPT SECRET
@@AlternateUniverse-fb9tn I love my Z840, but Windows 11 won't install on it, says the hardware isn't capable enough which is absurd. I was planning on using this machine as my media server for years to come, a task it performs with aplomb, but Windows 10 support ends in one year, so I'll have to come up with a different solution by then.
@@dlg5485 hmm thanks for the heads up.
As a Mac Pro user who has become accustomed to high-end hardware, this is the only PC I've ever been convinced I'd buy.
+CaptainDarren82 Yes this is a great machine! Very powerful and highly expandable. However, did you see +jasonlax comment below from 7 months back, He makes a strong point on the Lenovo P900, basically says P900 > Than this- and backs it up with some cold hard facts. Either way both of these systems are monsters and very well designed. Here's a link to the P900, enjoy!

I recently migrated to a 2007 Mac Pro, and am enjoying the benefits of a dual-Xeon configuration, as well as a high-end GTX 960 graphics card (well, it's high end in comparison to everything else I've ever used), plus, the ability to use 32 GB of RAM in a single machine. I've been always looking for a over-the-top gaming build, and Xeons draw me due to their lack of integrated GPU, which scales back the heat output a slight bit, as well as a slight bit of cost for the integrated component, since I'd be using a dedicated card.
Sounds like a solid gaming platform! Workstations in general don't offer the same performance for gaming as they do for number crunching and 3-D modeling with all the error-correcting features. In addition, the GPUs designed for workstations are not as good at rendering fast frame rates like a dedicated gaming card. But, a rendering error in a game is not as bad as an error while building a bridge or something…critical. Thanks for the comments and check out our website www.itcreations.com if you are looking for other options or components. Thanks for watching!
I'm totally aware, though, it's a good reminder. I'm running a bit of an overkill for gaming, using 32 GB ECC FBDIMM ram and a dual processor quad core Xeon x5365 configuration. All in all, this Mac came into the picture with the low price point of a used machine, as well as my inclination toward macs. Favoring upgradeability, this was a no brainer.
Well played Captain!
Another video saving my little company big $$$. I needed Machine Learning machines to dedicate towards researching AI weed spotting on large-format farms, and I've been struggling to find a system that can comfortably support the ridiculous compliment of hardware needed per-workstation without blowing $2k on a Thinkstation P940 as just the core. Going by just board images I wasn't sure the Z840 could pull off the job, but knowing the 5th slot becomes a CPU 8x slot with the 2nd CPU installed, and thus can be bifurcated for NVMe storage, means I can just barely cram everything needed into a single
I priced an upgrade to my Z820 as I need the AVX2, Getting all the parts individually and adding up the total, i got a cost of $25,000.00 !!!! The Z840 offers the same horsepower at a small fraction of the cost of all new components. IMHO no reason to buy a new PC when these old HP workstations were built with so much raw power way back when...
The chassis of HP Z-840 computer is a real masterpiece. It's the state-of-the-art design, unmatchable, inspired by old Apple Pro but better. I recently purchased one Z-840 dual processor for running CAD (NX and Solid Works). I truly believed I am getting the top workstation money can buy. I was not afraid to pay $7,200 for it. I was so proud that I almost posted a picture of my new workstation on my Facebook.
But I was not impressed when turned the power button on. HP Z-840 (with HP Z Turbo Drive G2 512 GB) needs 1 min 20 sec to boot! My 4-year old HP Z-400 (with 512 GB SSD) needs 40 sec to boot. My 3-year old 15” MacBook Pro with Retina display needs 24 sec to boot Windows on Bootcamp.
The last computer in my possession that needed ~1.5 min to boot was an IBM PS/2 386 22 years ago. HP Technical Support updated BIOS and all drivers on my Z-840 but couldn't improve the booting performance. LOL.
+Miroslav Mitrovic you would not be the first person to report an issue with the boot-up speed. Seems like you are using the appropriate hardware, and have updated BIOS. Perhaps some changed to the BIOS settings? Once it gets up to speed, are you satisfied with the performance?
+Miroslav Mitrovic I have four of these boxes - and they are terrific. Boot times, not sure why that's any concern. These boxes are meant for 24 X 7 activity, which is what we put our Z820/Z840's through. Years of reliable massive computing of petabytes, and what do you have to say. Boot times. Who buys a box like this and cares about boot times?
Scott Carl Too true! there really is no need to turn it off with all the enterprise-class components. Also rack mountable if you ever replace it with something faster!
Nice review!! What is the maximum Hard drive capacity that this workstation can accommodate?
Hi there!
And thank you! Hard drive capacities are listed in the QuickSpecs for this system, which you can find here starting on page 41, www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/Z840/HP-Z840-Workstation-QuickSpecs.pdf
Newer, higher capacity drives would also work if they can fit and connect. HP, does not vet every drive out there and are also limited by what is available at time of testing. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

Hi I have HP Z840 and I have a problem.
From time to time the fan assembly will start run full speed until 1 I open the side chassis door or 2 I tap on the chassis door or if the fans don’t stop on the fan assembly.
Any suggestions what can be the problem.
Is it the motherboard or the fan assembly.

+Dolfocar Ali sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, the Z840 is HP's super workstation and definitely outside of your budget, sorry. You'll have to wait a while until it comes down in price. However, the Z620 is within your budget, this one: www.itcreations.com/workstation-hp/HP-Z620-WORKSTATION.html and I think we can probably do better on price. Here is our overview video:

I have been in the IT industry in Silicon Valley for almost 30 years working for both and with HP and Dell products (among others) (and also for Intel, and AMD). I can tell you without any doubt that HP workstation products (and in many cases server products) are generally inferior to Dell in design and being overly complicated, and intentionally limited by firmware (where Dell has historically been the least offender in this commonplace practice designed to protect profits, while ultimately limiting the customer/end user).

I have z230 its fantastic 😎
Im planning to buy the Z2 series. How is the support?
Is the Z840 compatible with the Nvidia Tesla K80? I see you mention Tesla K40 GPUs but just want to be sure the K80 is compatible. Thanks in advance.
Hi Drumming!
This on the HP community forum. Couldn't have said it better myself. Short answer for those who don't want to click the link is no, because of potential overheating issues. Thanks for watching! h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Nvidia-K80-Accelerator-GPU-on-a-HP-Z840-Worksation/td-p/6577384
@@Itcreations-LA Thanks for the reply and the link. Do you know if cooling is the only issue? I'm thinking of adding additional cooling so if that's the only issue then I can work around that. Just didn't want to run into any driver or software incompatibilities or some sort of hardware mismatch that renders the GPU unusable.
@@drumming76
We have not tested this in one of our systems so I cannot give you a definitive answer on your question. That said, the technical guide says you can install either 2x 225W cards or a single 300W card www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/z840/hp-workstation-technical-whitepaper.pdf
The most complete information I found on the Nvidia K80 is on the TechPowerUp site and indicates the K80 requires 300W and a PSU of at least 700W, which is fine given you still need the optional 1125 W power supply, 90% efficient, for the Z840 with a PGU of 300W. www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/tesla-k80.c2616
I can't imagine the driver will be an issue but again I cannot confirm that. May just be the heat issue. So, no definitive answer here… sorry. If you do install the K80 post an update, we would all love to hear how it works out! Definitely monitor the temperature under load. Good luck!
@@Itcreations-LA Thanks again for all the info, completely understandable that you can't give a definitive answer. I guess it's not tried too often so it's hard to find examples of. I will definitely update here if I go ahead with it. Fingers crossed it goes well.
In answer to the question "how much is it?" (that for whatever reason I am still not able to directly reply to, and nor can I read the name) the answer is, it depends on the configuration. The base configuration can have just one processor instead of two. I think this machine will run with as little as 2GB memory and probably only one hard drive. We offer about 70 preconfigured systems on our site but can also configure to your specifications. See here for pre-configured systems: www.itcreations.com/workstation-hp/HP-Z840-WORKSTATION.html Give us a call or send us an email with your specifications and we can quickly price a unit for you.

I've always wanted to test the Z840 out, and see how long it takes to render .targa files from 3DMAX.
Too many variables. If you find out please give us an update. Thanks for watching!
How does it compare to the z800? I have a 12-core, 24-thread Dual Xeon z800?..Should I buy the NEW 36-core z840?...Is it quiter, smaller, faster, lighter than the z800?...My z800 is a Loud BEAST !.....What do you recommend?...Or should I just stick with my z800 which I added a 500gb. PCIe SSD with PCIe adapter card, , 6tb. hard-drives, 128gb. or ram, Nvidia GTX 750ti, Wifi-ac card, Bluetooth USB adapter, BlueRay burner, Sound Blaster Audigy 2zs with live drive, and Windows-10.
+Alex4SiliconValley hi Alex, The Z840 is a beast, although it looks like you've got a great setup with the Z800. That said, depending on what you're using your system for, if it's not measuring up to your workload the Z840 would be a significant improvement. It is two generations removed from the Z800. With the Z840 as you correctly stated you can run not only 36 cores but now up to 44 cores with the new v4 processors being supported. However while a lot of cores is good for certain applications the clock rate does take a hit and they may, or may not, provide the performance you're looking for, again depending on your application. The Z840 is better, stronger, faster. and you get I think PCIe 3.0 lanes and Xeon E5-2600 v3 and v4 processors. It also supports DDR4 memory, which is significantly faster than what you are using. I'm not entirely sure on this one but I think you can install two high-end graphics cards and a graphics accelerator. 1TB of RAM with 64GB DIMM modules, double that with 128GB modules. Here are a few resources for you, a comparison of the Z800 to the Z820 and the data sheet for the z840

No, you don't have to use both CPUs but you will only get half the memory, and half the PCIe slots as you will need the 2nd CPU to realize the full power of the system. Thanks for watching!

Hi
Can it run with in Sli mode from Nvidia GTX series ?
We have not specifically tried to link two Nvidia GTX Series GPUs not listed in the supported hardware. However, that said, here dGroves, the distinguished professor states many times on this HP forum that, and this is the way he wrote the post "again, just to be clear,......NO CONSUMER VIDEO CARDS ARE SUPPORTED IN SLI MODE ON THE HP WORKSTATION Models." Seems a little triggered. Still i would like to test. If and when we do, I will post. BTW, here is the rest of the conversation h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Business-PCs-Workstations-and-Point-of-Sale-Systems/Nvidia-SLI-in-Z-Workstation/td-p/6965639 It relates to the Z4 G4 but our "Professor" indicates this is the case for all HP Workstations. There are Quadros that use SLI and are supported but apparently, if we are to believe the Professor, no consumer cards. Thanks for watching
Is it good for gaming?
+Hacker .net This is a professional workstation meaning it has ISV certification and is designed specifically to work with specific high-level programs to design, build or calculate some serious S%@^! I suppose it would handle gaming ok but this is not designed for gaming. The processor, memory, and graphics cards are all designed with error correcting code which is very helpful when doing calculations that require exact tolerances. You could probably build a better gaming system for a fraction of the cost. However, your gaming system would not be able to do what this system does for engineering, geoscience, financial calculations-that kind of thing. If a gaming system drops a few frames here and there while rendering a complex scene in a game, no big deal, but if those same errors occur while designing a bridge or a plane that would be a problem. Thanks for the question, and thanks for watching!
Thank you :D
***** Anytime! Thanks for watching!
where's the M.2 located?
These older models do not have M.2 integrated on the system board. However, you can install a Z-Turbo drive PCIe card in one of the slots. They are available in single, Z dual-Turbo or quad-Turbo formats. See page 10 of the QuickSpecs here: www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/Z840/HP-Z840-Workstation-QuickSpecs.pdf More general information here on the platform with documentation at the very end: www.itcreations.com/workstation-hp/hp-z840-workstation.asp Lastly some specific information on those cards here: www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/z8-g4/quickspecs-hp-z-turbo-quad-pro-and-dual-pro.pdf

what is the price of z840
Hi +Yasir Ali the price of the system is dependent on a variety of factors; type of processor, memory, storage, GPU's, HD controllers, etc. Very few people will max out on all components. This system will support up to 1TB of memory but you can get by with just a single 4GB memory module. The system also supports a bunch of different GPUs and in fact, will support up to three full-width GPUs, if I'm not mistaken. Click this link, then click the green "Shop Now" button to see pricing on pages and pages of pre-configured systems. www.itcreations.com/workstation-hp/HP-Z840-Workstation.asp mention watching this video to save $150 on a system valued at $1500 or more. Thanks for watching!
Thanks sir Thanks a lot
But its too coastly
Yasir Ali I would have to agree with you there but keep in mind this is HP's most powerful workstation and most people who use workstations don't need this much either. The good news, there are many other options that still deliver powerful performance. Like the HP Z440, HPZ640, HP Z1. Of course there are also very powerful workstations from Dell T7910, T5610 and let's not forget Lenovo with several newer systems P500, P700, P900. And then there are older systems like th eprevious generation models that still deliver greta performance but as with all things there's always a new and improved version. here are a few links to our site for workstations from HP, Dell, and Lenovo- just about all of them will have a better price point than the Z840

Hi there,
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your system. Check out the Maintenance and service Guide on Page 101 if you key it in at the top of the page, or actual page number 91. It covers the Diagnostic LED and audible Beep codes. www.itcreations.com/user-manuals/z840/hp-z840-workstation-series-maintenance-and-service-guide.pdf
The full Troubleshooting section starts on page 86 if you key in the number top of page or on actual page 76. Sounds like your problem may be "Power failure (power supply is overloaded)". If you need parts, check out IT Creations www.itcreations.com and do a search, chances are we have what you are looking for. Good luck!
@@Itcreations-LA so its my power supply
Hi,@@adhameda3071
Not necessarily. Follow the procedures outlined in the section I noted above and it does continue on to page 92 continue on to the next page. One suggestion is to disconnect items that are drawing power and reconnect them one by one, turning it on in between to see if there is a specific component that is causing the problem. BTW, as you test remember to turn off and remove the power cable prior to working in the unit, also be careful about static electricity. Standard precautions. It could also be a lose connection on one of the components. You could need a new system board. There are several options listed the least expensive and easiest to solve is to check for lose wires and make sure all the PCIe cards are seated firmly in the slots. Same for memory modules. Then check all connections to the PSU and onto the system board. There are several things to check prior to buying anything. It is a little time consuming but well worth it to not just buy something and hope it solves the problem. As I said (and the maintenance guide too) it could be just something got lose and needs to be more firmly seated. Tell us how it goes. Good luck!

Too many potential issues, from CPU to motherboard.
Bad ram can also cause that. Motherboard issues are common with these old workstations. I bought Lenovo S30, it had similar issues, when it would get stuck I would lose firewire connectivity.
They are old. I would test 1 by 1, starting with CPU on another board, and if that solves the issue it was the motherboard. Testing ram is easy, just not in your system. CPU fails last (usually), but possible
this guy should have done the review puffing a cigar and a old fashioned Mic :)
