Hope you guys enjoyed and thanks to all who reached out during my absence. A new child, new work, and a back injury really put a damper on the time I could spend in the workshop, but I'm happy to say I'm back at it now. Here's the parts used for this video: -85% Phosphoric Acid: amzn.to/4drcZni - Ferrous Sulfate (I made my own): amzn.to/4dhCIyj - Manganese Carbonate (found cheaper at pottery suppliers): amzn.to/3ZE7IoW - Nitric acid (or substitute a few grams of nitrate salt) - amzn.to/3ZCzNwX
Happy to see you back and I completely understand having to prioritize. I hope the back is well mended, the work is pleasing and that the small human and the maternal unit are happy and healthy.
He *LIVES* !!!! Was happy to see you comment on Mr. Harrell's passing. Hadn't seen anything from you in quite a long time, I thought something bad had happened. I hope your back is doing better, back injuries are nothing to play with.
Its still far from perfect, doubt it'll ever be, but I'm happy to say its serviceable! Truly bummed about Paul Harrell, but man did that guy face his end like a boss.
I have scoliosis, so back injuries are no stranger to me - when your spine isn't straight, your back muscles are stressed in odd ways they're not supposed to be, and injury is far too easy to inflict. I've had months and months of agony multiple times, and I've learned to detect the earliest signs of a problem, and IMMEDIATELY stop what I'm doing. When I stop at the first signs of a problem, I can limit the pain to not too bad, and just a day or 2, but if I push it beyond that, it's hell for weeks or months. Back injuries are the WORST.
Can’t emphasize how happy I am seeing ya post again, started watching you freshman year of high school and here I am commenting 3 years into my mechanical engineering bachelors. Crazy how time flies. Congrats on the new kid my man, keep up the great videos as always!
Holy Hell man. I have done the new child, new work and back injury but never all at the same time. Good to have you back with us, I was getting worried.
Your videos are really great. You are a hobby chemist and you show it. You don't pretend to know something you don't know and I give you a lot of credit for that. Keep up your good work. Greetings from a professional chemist
Well done Bob, you succeeded where I failed. I've never been able to get satisfying results in my tests. Do you need to process steel wool with your solution to keep the iron content high enough?
Thanks Carlo! With the added ferrous sulfate I have found the solution is pretty much ready to use out of the gate, no need for seasoning with steel wool, although perhaps a tiny addition wouldn't hurt as I've found the first batch of parts to not look quite as nice as following batches.
So happy i found this, 2 years since your last video great to have you back. Looking forward for more. The algorithm never recommended this upload to me i only found it since i was browsing through old youtube subscriptions, lucky me. All notifications activated.
I am so happy you're back!!! I thought something terrible happened. The last episode I saw was you making nitric. Just glad you're OK, that the family is good!!! You're awesome!!!
I recently came to this channel cos i was interested in nitric acid making(not for any project just curious) and i decided to subscribe even though i saw the channel seemed to be dead, and like magic 2 weeks later a new video
I used the concentrate from Brownells many years ago to park a tabuk flash hider for my long-barreled AK (came out great). The comments I saw online had similar issues you had with the first batches and there were quite a few that suggested putting some steel wool in the new solution... that something about the iron that gets dissolved in the process from the first run makes the future runs better.
Welcome back! Yeah, a back injury and a new kid will slow you down, that's for sure. Glad you hear you're OK though and hopefully we'll be seeing some new videos soon 👍👍
Omg he is alive, iv missed his videos so bad that I went back and watched every single video a few times. It's been a few years since I saw any new videos. Low and behold here it is. Thank god your back making new ones. I had a serious back injury myself from getting t-boned by a drunk driver. L4 and l5 no longer have any cushioning between them. I'm so tired of seeing RUclips nonsense and so glad your back (alive) thank god. Please 🙏 keep them coming. 🙏
I'm making a knife from a file and planned on bluing it. Parkerizing might be a way to go for a finish. It will be a bush craft style knife so it'll need a durable finish. I was glad to see a new video. Welcome back.
I'm really glad that you're back (and that your back is back to normal). After typing that out, back doesn't even sound like a real word anymore... Back.
Im so glad you are back. Probably the best channel on youtube for manly chemistry. Would love to see other types of content too, there must be tons you could teach us.
I agree, the Parkerizing coating looks better and protects the outside. Love the way it looks as well. That's why they Parkerize impact sockets, makes them last. forever
Welcome back ! instant click as soon as I saw this notification..went looking for you manually a few months back wondering if the algo had done something dumb.
No lie, i was thinking about you literally yesterday and i tried looking for your channel but i couldn't remember the name. Now in another two years when you haven't uploaded, I'll probably still forget your channel name.
Good to see you back. Couple things I could suggest. Using electrical contact cleaner (pentane) as a final de-oiling step is about the cleanest solvent commonly available. Even an inactive machine shop still has a notable partial pressure of hydrocarbons in the air, so perhaps this is an outside step. I might suggest a flash oxidation with ozone after the citric etch, I’ve read papers on the use of it In significantly increasing the adhesion of concrete to rebar (like 2-3 times) because it’s a very fine, microscopic and strongly adhered oxide. I would imagine it’s of use here because it would greatly increase the density of nucleation sites? If that’s even the right term here, but definitely anything that increases nodule density would refine the grain significantly I would hazard a guess.

Congratulations on the new mini human!
Missed opportunity for a "how I made blue bathtub crystals" video with a really click baity thumbnail 😂
Good to see you back. I've checked several times to make sure yt wasn't suppressing.
Happy to see you back and I completely understand having to prioritize. I hope the back is well mended, the work is pleasing and that the small human and the maternal unit are happy and healthy.
