Trent has chosen to keep his life more private. But today he opens up about his experience being hard of hearing and getting the cochlear implant. We were surprised to find out that once you get the cochlear implant it can take months and sometimes years to learn how to hear! But it is definitely worth the hard work if you want to do it. Trent loves his cochlear implants and this is his story! :) From now on I will make sure all of my videos have closed captions. It might take 24 hours or so to process after I upload, but I assure you that I am paying to have all of my videos captioned properly from now on. Thanks for watching!
I have not watched the video yet, but I hope Trent is alright and I apologize for his condition. Thank you so much for sharing information about him, I know it was probably difficult to make this video. Thanks again

I've noticed a lot of hearing individuals aren't aware of this. I've been told that it's normal for hearing people to speak louder instead of clearer and also clearer doesn't mean slowerer. just more ununciated. not slower. not louder. it's actually relatively rude to those who are hard of hearing or deaf.

When Trent said that people don’t repeat what they say because they don’t want to take the time to, that just made me cry. That’s so horrible and rude and Trent is so lovely, and it makes me feel so ashamed that people who are more so privileged feel better than others who are hard of hearing.
yeah I’m a person who hates repeating myself but i remember not to get upset when I’m talking to my friend who’s hard of hearing because it’s not her fault. and i talk on the quieter side lol.
It is frustrating and it happens to us daily, thank you so much for understanding. I really hope that this video will help people recognize this problem.
Hey Colleen! You should show Trent the classic song by Danny DeVito that goes like this: DO NOT DIDDLE KIDS ITS NO GOOD DIDDLING KIDS I WOULDN'T DO IT WITH ANYBODY YOUNGER THAN MY DAUGHTER NO LITTLE KIDS, GOTTA BE BIG OLDER THAN MY WIFE, OLDER THAN MY DAUGHTER
As a fella who is profoundly deaf with two cochlear implants - its really lovely that you are spreading deaf awareness 😊 means a lot to the deaf community!
I'm deaf with a cochlear implant too, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that you will be captioning your videos! I feel like I miss out on so many good videos because youtube massacres captioning when a person talks fast or when multiple people are talking. I love that Trent talked about his experiences in your video, and hope to see more of him in the future! :)
Accidentally Abby what you can do as well is try slowing the playback on the video I do that for the captions cause at night I can't have nothing loud so I watch RUclips and Netflix on a slower playback so I can catch up with the captions and I read fast
I can't even imagine how frustrating and discouraging that must be at times. When you mentioned " or when multiple people talk" I realized that vlogs must be especially difficult to watch bc there's typically families and groups of friends etc that are all talking and people in the background talking that you aren't seeing on screen, which means you also aren't able to read lips. So if captioning isn't picking it up properly you *really* won't know what's going on. Wow, things I never thought about. I wonder why more deaf/hard of hearing people aren't complaining about this though?! I don't think I've ever seen or heard any complaints anywhere. Thanks for opening my eyes to something that's never crossed my mind.
Accidentally Abby My mom is deaf with cochlear implants too, and she’s obsessed with James Charles. I’m not sure if he has captioning, but I’m like, girl how? I can’t keep up with his fast talking 😂
My mom, dad, brothers and sisters are deaf. I am the only hearing child in my family. My twin brothers Oskar and Oliver are profoundly deaf, my big brother Carson has cochlear implants. My twin sisters are both severely deaf and are mute. My other 2 sisters are also mute. I have one more adopted brother who is a mute. My mom is profoundly deaf and my dad is also mute. When they found out I wasn’t deaf they were really confused. After 7 deaf children, they were shocked! I choose not to speak when I’m home. I don’t have friends over because it can intimidate my siblings, and it can frustrate my parents. No-one really understands what I’m going through, at home. I have another new baby sister, she’s in the process of her hearing tests. My mom is sure that she is hearing, so that is good for me. I know how he’s your brother and you obviously have to care for him but the way you treat him is so sweet! Go Trent, you’re awesome!
Hey hun. I'm in Australia and just read your comment. I lost my hearing 9 yrs ago after 2 bone marrow aspirations. I don't have anyone deaf in my family. I have had cochlear implant surgery on one ear. I'm on Instagram @breephoenix76 if you want to talk. I'm in Australia so theres probably a time difference as a nurse I have spoken to a few people like you and there are ways to help you, it's not your fault you were born able to hear honey. If you don't want to contact me you could talk to an audiologist who may give you some suggestions about how you need your friends over and would like to tell your family you are not trying to hurt their feelings in anyway. Much love Bree xx
@@storyhadfield3526 haha why is that because im willing to help others? We need to care more about others in this world today. Feel free to find me on instagram @breephoenix76
What a sweet man. It is rude when people get frustrated with people hard of hearing. But I hope he knows that person is probably feeling bad of themselves and it has next to nothing to do with him. But people really should take at least a few moments to get over themselves.
There's a couple that come into my restaurant a couple times a month. The rest of my co-workers get pissed off with them and have me server them. I love serving this couple. They point to what they want and write down like "no tomato's" or any special request they have. I once looked up "how is your food" and "have a great day" to sign to them. They smiled so much cause they were happy a hearing person was willing to take the time and communicate with them in their own language. She even helped me fix the words that I had messed up. And (not that it was the reason I did it) she gave me a tip double the check amount. She wrote "thank you for trying, it makes me feel so welcome. You're a good person". Im starting asl courses at community college next semester and couldn't be more excited
catherine rose No joke I’m crying 😭 You are an amazing person. That couple must be so happy to see you when they come into the restaurant. We really need more people like you in this world. Thank you for commenting this it made me very happy
Trent seems so sweet and a humble person!!! I personally have a sister that is deaf, has epilepsy, autism, and more! And a brother as well! But if you think about it, there differences make them who they are!!!
when i had a fanpage for colleen on twitter, i tweeted trent and said “i love youu!” and he responded multiple times. we literally had a conversation and hes soo sweet. i literally love him with all my heart.
wow this had me sobbing.. i feel so so heartbroken that people “give up” on trying to converse with people like Trent. this world isn’t patient enough to get to know such sweethearts like Trent that just so happen to be hard of hearing. thank you for sharing his story, it was so nice meeting him and seeing how awesome he really is:D
As an audiologist specializing in cochlear implants I am extremely moved by this video. Thank you for spreading awareness on this topic. Your brothers speech is amazing and I can only assume the team he worked with throughout his lifetime were amazing as well. So happy to give people the gift of hearing like your brother. This is why I do it
It would be more widely taught if it were more common. There is an island where so many people are deaf that sign language is a main language. But in America, for example, it's much more necessary to teach students Spanish now because it has more Spanish speaking people than Mexico now. But I see what you mean.
I can speak English and German pretty fluently and growing up in California we speak a lot of Spanish but I always mess up and throw in some random German word for some reason and idk why but it keeps me from fully learning Spanish. I know a few words in ASL but I find that I do the same thing there. I'll literally say something and then some freaking German word pops up and for a split second I think "I don't know how to sign that" and THEN I realize it's because it's German. Lol even my German is slipping now, too. Lol But I'll alway do my best to communicate with anyone, even if it means bringing up a clear text note on my phone to type it out or bringing up a translator (I understand Spanish so it can be spoken to me but I'm not sure what words are correct so Google translate has helped me have a lot of great conversations) ❤️
I ADORE that you are providing proper closed captioning for the hard of hearing. I’m not hard of hearing but I use the closed captioning late at night when my baby is sleeping so I don’t have to wear headphones or wake her up. So although the CC is mainly for the hard of hearing, it’s used by many. 💙
I actually cried when I watched his. Trent is so nice, and kind and listening to what has happened to him is so rude and disrespectful! I also love your bond with your brother it’s really sibling goals.
I’m 13 and I’m losing my hearing and I really appreciate this video for speaking out. And I really appreciate that u r getting closed captions and for letting a person in the asl community speak for themselves and letting Trent speak his story. I love you and thank you.
I can see that shane dawsons' formatting is really inspiring a lot of people to do stuff like him and I think youtube is at it's peak right now. I've never enjoyed it more.
I was crying watching this video because its so rude how people dont see him as a normal person and think that they can just say anything and that they don't have feeling because they cant hear but good on you for keep going on with your life and just putting it behind you
I work in fast food and yesterday I had two different deaf people come in and they were able to order by either writing their order down or pointing at things. When they were done ordering they would say thank you in sign language, and it made me upset that I didn't know how to say "you're welcome" or "have a nice day." After seeing this video I'm definitely going to make an effort to at least learn some basic signs so I can better communicate with people that are hard of hearing.
I worked at Whataburger (fast-food burger place) and I always encountered the same thing. My brother is partially deaf so I knew how to say "thank you" and "you're welcome" but since I was barely learning at the time, it was frustrating to me not to be able to say more than just that. They usually just wrote down their order for me thought, I think they were used to it.
I second that there really isn't a way to say " you're welcome" in asl but there are many free resources to learn. I work with special needs children and use ASL very often in my classrooms. It's fun to incorporate into your life and can make communication easier in crowded or loud rooms too for those of us that are hearing. It has so many benefits I could go on forever xD but yeah! Learn to sign!
That book your dad made is incredible his such a great artists. Trent is inspirational. I hope to see more of him in the future if he feels comfortable with it🙂. He has such a warm and friendly personality. He was a joy to watch.
Oh my gosh I'm deaf too! ❤ But 100% deaf on both ears, I got implants when I was 3 and doctors said that my parent should be happy if I can say something, but I can speak 3 languages fluently ❤
My grandfather was deaf and I learned sign language for him. He was a good man that I would talk to every day and each day we talked I would learn a new word. When he passed away I was really sad because he would help me out when I was getting bullied. He told me that he would get bullied and made fun of for not being able to hear but it was something he couldn't control. For everyone that's deaf...I appreciate you!
My father got the cochlear implants as well when he lost his hearing, and he said the same thing about how different the sound starts off weird. He kept saying we all sounded like robots until his brain could adjust better to the new input. He had so many appointments to have everything adjusted for it to work for him properly, and it still needs adjusting over time. He's the same as well with having a really hard time unless he can see people's lips moving to connect the visual with the sound. Waitresses have given him a hard time weirdly enough and will instead talk to me to have me rely it which is weird cuz I speak the same as anyone else. It was great to see they have had similar experiences with the cochlear implants.
I know this was a while ago but I struggle with this. I work in customer service. And I try so hard not to interrupt people who have speech issues. Because it is so rude. But sometimes, when someone’s struggling, I’ve finished their sentence for them and sometimes the person seems grateful. Rather than having to struggle. I don’t want them to feel bad for struggling but I also don’t want to cut them off 😔
I am hard of hearing myself (70% deaf both ears). I just found this video and it made my day. Thank you so much for educating people about HOH/deaf people. And a huge thanks to your brother for being so open and sharing his story and showing that us HOH/deaf people are just as awesome as everyone else!
I’m a year late but who cares. One of my best friends, Willow, is deaf. She’s teaching me and another friend sign so we can talk to each other. But she has like a hearing aide and mic thing that each teacher can wear (wear the mic) so she can hear. Our school started an ASL (American Sign Language) club so more people can learn sign. Our school is becoming extremely accepting of deaf, blind, and mute kids. It’s amazing seeing this story and knowing my friends story and it’s just awesome seeing so many more things about deaf people! (and blind and mute and more!)
My school now has sign language as and elective now! If you haven’t watched the movie “a silent voice” then you and your best friend should! It’s really good, anyways I’m wishing you and Willow the best 😁
In her video when she told her family she was pregnant he had a really sweet reaction!! And some of the comments were talking about his voice but all I was thinking was how cute he’s reaction was
Colleen i had no idea about this and I’ve been following you for a while. Both my parents are profoundly deaf and I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you so much for making it and raising awareness of deafness as an invisible disability. I made a video on what it’s like growing up with deaf parents which you might enjoy watching - just another aspect of the deaf community that people should be aware of. This video actually made m cry because I could really relate and understand Trent when he said people give up on him or are rude. It happens a lot to my parents and it breaks my heart. Much love ♥️♥️♥️
I’m partially deaf in both ears I have lost 30% in both ears I lost my hearing when I was five so I hated wearing my hearing aids I still do but I have to wear them cause they help me hear I’m also the only person in my family that has hearing aids 😕 btw I’m now 13
My parents are both profoundly deaf also, so I love this video! And I love the fact that there will now be closed captions (proper ones!). I really wish more you tubers would do the same. Thanks for sharing with us Trent. Xx
OMG your dad drawing cartoons of you and Trent together to keep the memories/stories is the coolest thing ever!!!! I wish I could do that for the children in my life. He should do a business where people tell him funny stories of their kids and give him pictures of them and then he does a little animation. That is the coolest!!
MicowMilk ACow I interpret the words that are being said and the songs that are being sung into sign. It's been a very rewarding experience. And deaf culture is not a bad thing... It's simply a term for how the deaf do things differently. It's awesome! Get to know more deaf and HOH people... You wont regret it!
MicowMilk ACow What?!? As a Deaf person I can tell you that we are proud of our Deafness. Deaf people don’t care about being Deaf. We have a culture and language and a community. Being Deaf is not bad. It’s an amazing gift to be part of something so strong and beautiful. Educate yourself.
Trent is so amazing... so so amazing! This videos definitely has to be one of my favourites ever. I was so emotional watching Trent’s story and seeing your guy’s childhood moments... it was tugging on my heartstrings! Everyone who has a disability or “disadvantage/struggle” of their own is absolutely beautiful no matter what! and they deserve more than anyone to be loved, cherished, and respected. Thank you Trent and Colleen, for sharing your story with us... man Trent is so awesome!~ ❤️❤️
I’m studying to be an audiologist and talking about the deaf community and individuals who are hard of hearing is SO important! You love your brother so much, thank you for sharing his story!
My mum is deaf in both ears and has been since 18 months old. Even with a hearing aid in the left ear that she still has small amount of hearing ability left in, she still can’t hear the like rest of us can, just tones of sound. My nana never had my mum learn sign language but recently she got her diploma In Auslan (Australian sign language) I’ve been taking classes too and am close to fluent so I can communicate with her better. Having a hearing aid can be stressful because it’s not the same as having natural hearing. It’s artificial and you can’t block out nosies or focus in on certain noises like hearing people can, it’s just everything at the same time. Very stressful. I love my mum so much and feel blessed to have her in my life and be able to be on this journey with her.
I can't imagine what Trent has been through in his life! Seeing his face light up talking about hearing the Mario music for the first time really shows that this is real because that's what he enjoys. He can't even hear The Hug Song! It gives me chills everytime I hear it. Trent and the rest of your family has been strong during this whole situation. Thank you for making this video.
The hug song is amazing! i'm hard of hearing as well, i wear hearing aids and can hear for the most part, but without them i'd be hopeless aha. I understand when Trent says that he cant understand what is being said, he means that no matter how loud, phrases or words just don't process inside our head, the reason we lip-read is to piece together information we may have missed, and our brain goes through this process of picking suitable words until it matches (and hope for the best... doesn't always work, hence why we may be slow when responding if we ask to repeat yourself) so when i listen to new songs on the radio, i hear the beat and the tune as well as the singer, but the words just don't process as words... if that makes sense? (typically why we need lyrics or subtitles for certain things) hope i can help others with this response :) sorry if you thought i came across as correcting you, but i just thought i should clarify what he meant by not understanding it :) (who knows maybe he was making a joke about the song being random )
I relate to this a lot. My mom is hard of hearing as well. She lost 75% hearing in one ear and 65% hearing in the other. She lost her hearing due to an allergy from medicine. (i forget what exactly) But im always patient and repeat things more clearly when she asks me what ive said. She reads lips so whenever somebody talks to her, they have to look at her. Shes tried hearing aids when she was young, but it hurt her ears, it just really didnt work well. but one of my best friends are also hard of hearing in both ears and he has a hearing aid. So this video hits close to home, and i absolutely love this. i dont think Colleen would see this comment but thanks for this video. Some people can be so rude and take advantage of people hard of hearing, and who are deaf.
Hi Colleen, you probably won’t see this but I just wanted to thank you for this video so much.... I’m 12 years old and I have sensorineural hearing loss in my left ear and I wear a hearing aid. I struggle with self confidence because of this and I love seeing videos of people with hearing issues it helps me a lot. Edit- I didn’t expect this many likes at all but thank you very much!!!
I can't imagine how hard that must be, especially at middle school age as everyone can be so judgemental then, but just remember that you are a beautiful person and that those who are rude to you probably are projecting their own insecurities onto you.
Trent is so strong and I’m so happy that he was able to get a cochlear implant. I know this isn’t the same but I watched a show called switched at birth and one of the girls was deaf along with most of her friends and their families. This made me really interested in deaf people because I think that it is amazing how bearing and deaf people can communicate so well. There are so many people that go through the same thing and I think it is so cool how there is a whole deaf community and I actually started to learn some sign language in case I ever met someone who couldn’t hear so I do understand some sign language mostly just picking it up from watching the show for so long! :))
Did anyone else notice how much Colleen and Trent look alike? Like I could totally tell they were siblings from a mile away! This was such an inspirational video❤️ love this!
Trent is so precious and kindhearted!! I work as a bank teller in the town that I live in, and a few months back I waited on a customer who was deaf. he came in and I greeted him as normal before he pulled out his phone which has a pre-typed note on it explaining that he was deaf and that he had some fraudulent activity on his debit card and he wanted to get that taken care of. although I slipped up a couple times, speaking normally and forgetting that he couldn’t hear me, I managed to help him resolve his situation through writing back and forth with him on post it notes. I was so happy to have had that experience and to help someone who may have been met with rudeness somewhere else, and I kept our notes as a little reminder of that day. I’m so glad you shared Trent to this channel through this video, and I would love to see more of him and his journey if he is ever comfortable with it again!! 😊💛
I was born deaf but then later on I started hearing in one ear because idk I was too little to remember but my mom tells me I had to go through some surgery. anyways, it sucks. Not that I'm deaf. But that people are always judging you and thinking that you can't do anything, but really is deaf people are as normal as anyone who can hear. but for me if you want to know how it feels, it's like more of a whisper ..And then sometimes in the middle of a sentence that somebody is speaking it sounds like their not saying anything at all. but honestly I'm very happy with myself and my life. I hope to become a journalist one day:)) and ik I will get there 💗💗 but trent, you're honestly a huge inspiration to me. Thank you for posting this. It made my day to know that somebody actually understands. ❤

I loved how he said he got emotional when he heard them. I even got emotional once when I heard one because it brought back memories from my childhood instantly.
My husband is hard of hearing, and I wear glasses. When we first started dating we spent a lot of time in the car, and I was usually unfamiliar with the areas we were driving in. He had to give me directions and we would laugh because it sounded something like this: Him: Turn right up there Me: At the light? Him: What? Me: At the light? Turn at the light? Him: No before the light, right up here... Me: Where? Him: What?? You missed the turn...

I have a brother name Carson
Wow, that sounds really difficult...but also, you have a big family!!! 2 sets of twins?

And I feel like Trent looks similar to Duncan
I thought that too omg
I think so too.. and I think that little Luke looks just like Trent!
@@connieb4372 I feel like Luke looks more like on his mom's side.
You are an amazing person!
Good for you! There really need to be more people in this world like you!
That is awesome

Your brother sure likes to open up to other people too.

Trent seems so sweet and a humble person!!!

wow this had me sobbing.. i feel so so heartbroken that people “give up” on trying to converse with people like Trent. this world isn’t patient enough to get to know such sweethearts like Trent that just so happen to be hard of hearing. thank you for sharing his story, it was so nice meeting him and seeing how awesome he really is:D
This is why I do it
I wish ASL and sign language in general was more widely taught. People should at least know the alphabet. Implants are not an option for everyone.
@@jupitersspell ASL is the 3rd most taught language in America
Adventures of Betty and Boop where I live we have three national languages English Maori and sign language which is really cool and nice 😊☺️

Trent is so sweet and kind. I’m glad that his hearing has gotten a little better.
Same!
OMG-I've gotten so used to having at on a work (a Deaf school) that things look weird without it!
your brother is literally the cutest.
it's crazy how much chris's kids look exactly like colleen and her siblings look when they were younger. like some 3d printing. genetics is crazy.

Dawn Dish Detergent Fun fact, there’s not really a way to sign “you’re welcome!” A simple thumbs up will do and a Deaf person would understand. 😊
Courtney Rains oh thanks for the tip :)
Dawn dish soap is the realest soap...👍🏻
I second that there really isn't a way to say " you're welcome" in asl but there are many free resources to learn. I work with special needs children and use ASL very often in my classrooms. It's fun to incorporate into your life and can make communication easier in crowded or loud rooms too for those of us that are hearing. It has so many benefits I could go on forever xD but yeah! Learn to sign!

Connor O'Brien yeah that’s v normal bc cochlear implants don’t really make you able to hear it’s very confusing, my dad’s an ear doctor
My son has speach delay and it is so rude when people don't take the time to hear what he saying . Thank you for this .

Savannah Mae same here! I have a hearing aid, and my teachers have to wear a microphone called the FM system.
Josie Mills Oh cool! I didn’t know the actual name for it, so thanks for telling me!
My friend Anna has to have the mic and hearing aid
My school now has sign language as and elective now! If you haven’t watched the movie “a silent voice” then you and your best friend should! It’s really good, anyways I’m wishing you and Willow the best 😁

My both parents are profoundly Deaf too! This video made me so happy cause it means Deaf awareness is brought to so many more people!
i have a deaf dad too
I always get people asking if my parents can read, drive, speak and once someone asked me if they can think. Ahhh 😑😑
Thanks for sharing this! I am an interpreter for the deaf at my church. The deaf community and deaf culture is so amazing!
44GlenCoCo why would a church talk about deaf that is not a church a church talks about God
44GlenCoCo and deaf culture isn't even good it's bad for the person who is deaf that's not nice to say 44
MicowMilk ACow did you read it wrong? She translates the words into sign language for the deaf people
MicowMilk ACow I interpret the words that are being said and the songs that are being sung into sign.
So glad I could hear this story from everyone's view. Kinda shows how everyone's affected differently and share different experiences

I love Trent! It's such a cool gift like he said that he's able to hear it.
(typically why we need lyrics or subtitles for certain things)
hope i can help others with this response :)
sorry if you thought i came across as correcting you, but i just thought i should clarify what he meant by not understanding it :) (who knows maybe he was making a joke about the song being random )
This is so real and I love it! Your brother is amazing.

thank you thats very kind! XOXO

Oops I meant hearing not bearing😂

haleynicolewbu that Is so sweet!
I loved how he said he got emotional when he heard them. I even got emotional once when I heard one because it brought back memories from my childhood instantly.
I’m a nanny for a little boy with cochlear implants! Loved this video thank you for this.
My husband is hard of hearing, and I wear glasses. When we first started dating we spent a lot of time in the car, and I was usually unfamiliar with the areas we were driving in. He had to give me directions and we would laugh because it sounded something like this:
Him: Turn right up there
Me: At the light?
Him: What?
Me: At the light? Turn at the light?
Him: No before the light, right up here...
Me: Where?
Him: What?? You missed the turn...
aww 🥺
