You missed the whole point of the song.. the hooker was a lost soul that was saved by the preacher. That's what he left behind. She changed her ways and taught her son the Bible, and he became a preacher.. she went on to live a loving and good life. We all will die, but it's the life we lived and love we gave that matters. You were way too obsessed with the term hooker and never got away from that in your mind.
Yes I hope he reads our comments as this is a good story about life. The hooked was given the blood stained Bible from the preacher that died in bus. N this preacher told the congregation of his mother ( the hooker) that read the Bible to him n he became a preacher
Wow! Thank you. I came here with the question in my mind. Is the Mother the hooker?? I kept picturing the preacher last Sunday giving the bible to his Mom and I just couldn't figure out how that preacher got it from the hooker. It makes sense now, thank you
Most reactors miss the meaning. The farmer, the teacher, and the preacher all had legacies to pass down. The hooker didn't have a legacy at first until she had a son who she read the blood-stained Bible to. He became a preacher, and this was her legacy.
I always just listened to the music, so it took me a while to understand who the three wooden crosses were and who survived. I realized when the narrator held up the bloodstained bible
Mercy was granted in the song so that the woman could change her life and raise her young son in a moral fashion. The irony is that he became a preacher in a way replacing the preacher that passed. Or at least that is my point of view on it. I love this song, it almost always makes me cry.
Great reaction. I was one of the slower thinkers when this song came out. I took it to mean the preacher was asking the lady of the night if she can see the promised land (as her life was ebbing away) and that he gave her the Bible to hold for whatever comfort it might provide her. So I loved the twist (well, it was a twist for me at least, LOL) at the end. Such an OMG moment at the time.
This song always gets to me. It has me thinking what have I done with my life when my time comes, because I know I'm not a good man... but I do try to do what is right.
Don't worry brother I'm right there with ya I know I'm not what the majority of people would call a good person but I try to be the best person I can and that's all we can do is try our hardest
Beautiful song, love his singing, good man, could it be that there were 4 miracles that day, all 4 were reborn that day, three were reborn into heaven and the forth reborn here on earth to show that miracles can happen to those that go down the wrong path 😊😊😊
I don’t know why people overthink this song. It’s not what you take when you leave this world behind it’s what you leave behind you when you go. The preacher left the love for God with the hooker. She was saved and she passed that love onto her son who became a preacher and passed that love of God onto his parishioners. Be an example of the good news as Christians we are tasked with bringing the news of Jesus Christ our savior to the lost that they might be saved. It really is the most important thing in life. Even if you can only do it by being an example living your life for Jesus in the best way a sinner can.
It amazes me how so many reactors miss this song's point. When the preacher says to the hooker... can't you see the promise land... it is supposed to make you think she is dying. If she were to survive... she wouldn't see the promise land. If you are comprehending the song's words... you are meant to be surprised it was the Preacher that died. Which is why the story in the end is told by a preacher.
First time I heard it on the radio, my reaction when the preacher said, can't you see the promise land? I thought well maybe she couldn't see the promise land because of her sins..... lol... The song writer hit a homerun. I think about this song everytime I drive past a wooden cross in the ditch.....
Two of them were searching for lost souls: The Preacher was searching for souls to save. The "Lady of the Night", who was searching for her soul, her purpose. She found it, when the Preacher gave her his Bible, she understood and taught His Word to her son, who in the end, became a Preacher himself. "It's not what you take....."
My impression of the hooker is that the lost souls she was looking for were her "clients", not her own soul. Surviving the crash and having the bible changed her life snd changed her heart.
This is a song that tells us that no one is beyond the reach of God. As Christians we spread the Word not knowing how it may impact somebody’s life for Him. The simple gesture of handing a woman of ill repute a Bible led her to raising a son who would go on to leading others to Christ. We don’t know why God take some and leaves others that’s His decision. When June Carter Cash died in May of 2003 many of her fans were surprised cause she was an example of budding health whereas her husband Johnny Cash had had health problems on and off in the latter years of his life. But June who was healthier died first. They say Johnny Cash couldn’t stand life without his beloved wife June Carter and he died less than four months later.
I love that the preacher left the hooker salvation which she passed it on to her son who became a preacher and he passed it on to his congregation, a great song of salvation.
I first heard this song today. Wonderful song. In less than one minute I feel sadness! No blues song gets me that fast because the lyrics make you visualize what he is describing yourself..Then the twist in the end. Wow!
The preacher passed the Bible to the hooker, who read it to her son who became a preacher. In essence, the preacher helped a lost soul turn the teachings read to her son, and by him becoming a preacher, he has the ability to reach many more lost souls.
I believe that it also gives a broader picture of why things happen in such a way that may sometimes seem to the human mind as unfair. God has a plan for every life and that means there are many different puzzle pieces that must fit together for the plan as a whole to come outright. Even Jesus had a few questionable people in His family tree, but how he got here didn't change who He was or keep Him from accomplishing the purpose God had for His life. Happy Resurrection Day, everybody!
Just in case some did not catch it... The 4th Cross (the one that was not there) would have belonged to the hooker! She lived - and this is my opinion on the story of the song = The Preacher did NOT preach to the Hooker. All he did was- he got her to think about something... He asked her a simple question about an absolute truth: "Can't you see the promised land?" Referencing what Jesus Christ our Lord said: "Thy Kingdom Come..." Definition = That absolutely, and most assuredly, know this - The Kingdom of My Father IS GOING to come!!!. This got her to think and realize that her Sin of desire to please her flesh (and the flesh of others) was going to NOT allow her to see this Kingdom which is coming! And then, she then RIGHTED her life and took that "Blood Stained" bible given to her and began to read it! Then she shared the contents of The Word of God in that Blood Stained bible with her son, who eventually became a preacher who now is sharing the Good News with others! And... That is what the Hooker left behind!!! After The preacher left behind the Good News as he was dying, to the hooker! God still had a purpose for the hooker, even though she did not know it yet. He wanted her, and it came to show, that she really down deep, wanted Him as well!
I loved this reaction!!! It's one of my favorite songs to see people's reactions and you got it quick and I cheesed the whole time!!! Have a Happy Easter!
I remember thinking when I first heard the song, "So there's the preacher, and the teacher, and the farmer, and the hooker, that's four. So the 'three wooden crosses, why there's not four of them' part kind of makes sense, but who was driving? What about the fifth one?" It occurs to me now one of them could've been driving, but I was thinking there HAD to be a fifth to be the driver. Also, something a little sadder to note, Randy Travis is 63, which is a little young to be having the health complications and emergencies he's been having. He's been in and out of the hospital a few times. That being said, this is a good song, both to react to and in general. I also love and respect the overall message of the song.
He said I guess it's not what you take it's what you leave behind. That preacher left the hooker with a love of the bible he gave her. She read it to her son who then became a preacher. Both the preacher and the hooker were searching for lost souls. They both found hers and it changed hers. That's what the preacher left behind.
I don't know if this started in the South, but believe it has become a Southern "thing", but families will erect small roadside crosses where a loved one has died (usually in a car wreck/accident). Hence, Three Wooden Crosses on the side of the road.
My take away - even when we are separated from God by our sins, we can be redeemed. And that redeemed sinner can make a impact on other lives in a positive way.
3 of the 4 had left a legacy behind that benefited humanity in some way. The hooker, at the time did not, she was spared and eventually left a legacy by bringing the blood-stained bible of the preacher with her to teach her son, who eventually also became a preacher.
I have often wondered about the bus driver and the 18 wheeler driver. The song says there a three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway. It never mentions any crosses on the left side of the highway. Yes I know I'm being too literal thinking about this. Lol
It's maybe a hard thing to grasp but the question of why some we consider worthy die and others don't goes back to," he's not willing that's why should perish". If you die without Jesus salvation, you're dead forever. Better the preacher dies than the lost soul. As a Christian my faith teaches me that death doesn't exist anymore. As Paul said," to live is Christ. To die is gain"
Perhaps a “thinker” of a song. It has a number of “left turns” that may loose you on the journey. The hooker was pregnant, and saved by the preacher. She then read that blood stained Bible to her son, that became a loved Preacher. Circle of life, circle of love.
The preacher saved the hooker. She raised her son to be a man of the cloth. None of us go to heaven because we are better then any one else. God loves us all equally. And no sin is worse then the other.
the hooked change her life around and had a son that is a preacher. so anyone can change there life around if they want r try to that what I got from the song
You talked over the big reveal of the song. Who has the bible? Who survived? You talked over that part. If you were actually hearing it you would have not talked but listened. Just saying.

An interesting take from comments on another reaction video to this song. Why would a hooker be going to Mexico? Perhaps she was pregnant with her son and headed to Mexico to get an abortion. The accident stopped that and the bible helped her turn her life around for her soon to be born son to become the second preacher in the song.
You are usually so perceived to the stories but seem to have gotten enamored with the performance and missed the last verse. The Hooker ends up cleaning up her act, marries, and raises her child in such a godly house that he becomes a preacher himself. In doing so, turns a tragic story into a story of redemption that potentially leads to many others being taught morality and godliness.
The preacher gave his blood stained BIBLE to the hooker. The preacher ( at the end of the song )held up the blood stained Bible that his momma read to him . The hooker lived so she could become a Christian and teach her Son about God , who became a preacher.
It shows God knows what he's doing. The preacher's mama read that blood stain Bible to him. She changed her life and look what she's leaving behind now
but because of the preacher she turned her life around. when she had a son she read that same bible to him every night as well as telling him the story of how she got it. becsuse of that her son became a preacher, too, so the other preacher's death wasn't in vain.
It doesn't ask a question about morals!!!! You started talking at the point that you would've understood the lyrics! It's about a mother that turned her life around, and raised a boy that became a preacher. You had the lyrics pulled up!!!!!
Like others have mentioned, you missed the entire moral of the story. It’s not about morals, the last verse tells you that the preacher speaking holding that blood stained Bible in his hands. Obviously the hooker changed her life and the preacher in the end is her son.

Because everything happens for a reason. Our Lord and Savior assures it.

Yes I know I'm being too literal thinking about this. Lol
The Preacher was the lone survivor...
Nope. She went on to have a son...
I saw you react to this last year when he did the duet with Josh Turner.
She changed .. she raised her child in the house of the Lord. Who became a Preacher himself.

The hooker was the singer's preacher's MOTHER... He did not seem to get that part, which was the point of the song.
You missed the point of the story. Its not about morals. Its about God working in the lives of believers.
I like Mr. Boyd, but he misses a lot of stuff. He has trouble seeing a forest because of all the trees.
