I spent a lot of time at Dave's house in the arroyo by the Rose Bowl during the early 80s. If I remember correctly he bought the house from his father, Dr. Roth, who was also our eye doctor, in San Marino, as children. Dave had a room in this huge house that was built out to be a habitat for squirrels and rabbits. It was a bedroom that had logs and tree stumps with a screen door. What a trip. I believe that Dr. Roth also owned Perkins Palace, a legendary music venue on Raymond Ave. in Pasadena. This was a magical time to grow up in So Cal, and we were always so proud to claim Eddie and the boys as our own. Thanks for the stories, background, and memories, Chris. You are another product of the San Gabriel Valley, who made us proud..

That's true! My band had the chance to open ,we didn't do it! The band I was in was glam ,and I was just playing in it until I could put what I wanted together! We would have been killed ,so ,no way! Maybe my band Trick Or Treat ,but that was in 1987 and capital records was looking for a new WASP ,and Blackie was already messing up ,so we almost got it,,but the singer freaked out, and that was that ! But we could have gone up against them ,if there was time travel !

I met Chris years ago after a WASP gig. We were at a club and I invited him to sit at our table. He was really down to earth and he actually told us that night about growing up around Eddie. He got in an argument with Blackie because he and Randy wanted to hang out after the club closed and Blackie wasnt into it. Chris said fuck Blackie and we all hung out anyway. It was really chill. Just some drinks and some smoke and we sat around listening to tunes. It was a really great night.

I have loved and adored EVH since I was in 8th grade 1980, in 1985 or 1986 I went to an Iron Maiden concert in long Beach, I was walking on the floor waiting for maiden to start so I could climb over people to get to the front row, so I'm standing around the back of the floor seats by all the PA's and here comes this dude, tall, long kick ass blonde hair, levis jeans and jacket, boots and a cigarette in his mouth unlit, I immediately recognized him, I said his name Chris Holmes, and he says , yeah, smiling, I then immediately realized the unlit cigarette in his mouth, right at that time he was about to ask me for a light, I had 1 match left and already had it lit before he asked, and he was totally appreciative and thanked me whole heatedly, for a fan like myself, it was awsome, the timing and everything, I became a Chris Holmes fan after that, after that maiden concert, I went to the judas priest concert, in long beach, I was walking in the halls going toward the doors where you enter into the backstage area, and coming out of those doors I see Chris Holmes again with 2 girls on each arm, as we were walking toward each other I said hey Chris, good to see you again, and Chris says, hey man, with a huge smile , I asked as he walked by, do you remember me? And to my shock, he said, yeah man, Maiden", and then gave me a thumbs up, I became a Chris Holmes fan for life after that, not a fan because he was famous , a fan of his heart and how he treated people that recognized him, I tell this story to whoever I'm talking rock days stories, and how cool Chris treated me whenever I ran into him, sorry for the long story, knowing now Chris grew up with my hero Ed Van Halen, I'm even more of a fan of Chris's. Thanks Chris , RIP ED!!!

What Eddie van Halen did, when he plays his guitar, it turns on a little light inside my head that made me see the world less dark as I normally did.
Terry Pratchett's books do the same thing with me.
Apart from being just greatly skilled craftsmen, they had something very special.....that makes their passing so devastating....it leaves the world just that much darker.....at least to me.

@ The Metal Voice Thank you for such a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to our King Edward.
The Missus woke me up crying and for the entire day we couldn’t listen to a note of King Edward without the waterworks comin’ - so many good times with his music -it felt weird
We found watching interviews with him and other kind folks like yourself paying tribute to Eddie makes it somewhat easier to bear. We literally had a day of intensely mourning. It might sound daft but Ed’s playing and attitude is hugely responsible for inspiring me to be the person I am.
There’s a Bad Religion ( Punk Band ) Lyric that says it al “ Everyone you love leaves a mark on your soul,
The world is a little less bright without King Edward
Im fighting cancer and depression and its been especially tough with the news of Eddie’s passing but hearing all these wonderful tributes and reaction and the love and joy he brought and is bringing….makes it a tad bit easier
Much love and respect! Thank you for honouring our King Edward. Eddie's music touched us so deeply because of his love for the instrument and the innovations he has done. To us, it feels like the brightest and best brother, Uncle, friend you ever had is not in our realm anymore. You have Nothing but love from the rock/metal / guitarist community, respect for your tribute to EVH, Rock n Metal does not get the exposure and respect that other genres get.
So, you are forever in the hearts of many a Rock / Metal / Guitar fan's hearts. Stay safe & all the best wishes to you. Watch this Video Interview and you'll see why we're hurting so much...The world is a little less bright without King Edward This is a brilliant interview if you haven’t seen it ruclips.net/video/yb26D8bBZB8/видео.html&ab_channel=Z%C3%B3caloPublicSquare

Ive heard most of this when Chris lived in my garage ,and he had 2 or 3 Marshall stacks straight from Eddie! When Chris or I was playing through them ,they sounded great! I had a friend that was a Van Halen clone ,he came over and played through the amps, they sounded exactly like Eddie! And Eddie met my Mom once and they hit it off and put her on the list for every show on the final tour ! So it was my Mom on the list for the final show at the Hollywood bowl. I have a ton of stories of the van Halen family and my Great grandmother grew up next door to them . And it was the cigarettes that got Eddie ,and I heard him say he wouldn't stop smoking bevause he couldn't drink and now he couldn't smoke! It's smoking that got Eddie, and it sucks! I have heard so many stories from Chris, and playing in our band Rat Bastard ,sounds a lot like WASP! Chris also grew up Mormon ,and so did I, so Chris is always great to listen to! I saw every Van Halen tour . And it was Glendale civic auditorium where Quiet Riot and VAN Halen . It is amazing how many people really never saw the real van halen with DLR!

i remember that magazine too ! 😄 I mostly used to get “Hit Parader” magazine because it seemed to cater to heavier rock and metal. This was in my little hick town in Alberta Canada about that time. ( was just like growing up in Hazzard County ! It’s no coincidence that Dukes of Hazzard was my favourite TV show and probably where I learned to drive. You could ask my first 3 cars about that ! 😄). I was about 13 or 14 when I first seen a pic of Blackie in there pouring blood out of a skull onto his face while holding an axe 🪓 haha! I went out and bought that first album the very next day in Red Deer ( the biggest city close to where I lived ) I loved Blackie’s voice right away and I still do. What really floored me though … was Chris Holmes playing! 😮 I was a young metalhead so I was obviously already listening to KISS, Van Halen , Black Sabbath, OZZY , AC/DC and Judas Priest but I do clearly remember this … Chris Holmes just blew my mind all over again and up to this very day I absolutely can’t stop listening to anything he plays ! I love it all ! and I’ll tell you exactly why …
I had just started playing electric guitar that year at about 14 years old maybe about 3 months before I first heard him. ( I’ve been playing for 38 years now and Chris has always been a huge influence ) Right away I thought to myself Chris has the chops of any of those guys and he has certain elements of all those styles made into his own heavy style ( arguably heavier than any other guitarist on that list ! although I would consider KK Downing and Glen Tipton quite heavy as well at the time , roughly the Screaming For Vengeance years 🤘🏻) but his riffs and solos are still melodic and it’s his own original sound ! To this very day Nobody sounds like Chris Holmes! Except the Mean Man Himself! I have always loved and been fascinated by Chris’s guitar playing from the first few notes I was an instant lifelong fan of his and I Always Will Be ! He rips like no other in his own right ! 🤘🏻 he’s a truly down to earth person who loves the fans and even just regular people in general. ( Must get that from his Mom she always seems pretty relaxed and funny at times and laughs about it all now as Chris got older in the vids of her 😊)
Chris is an absolutely killer Legendary guitarist in his own right, he doesn’t need to bow down to Anyone!… including Blackie ! Sorry to say it Blackie But it’s true ! He is without question a truly original guitarist just like EVH, Randy or Dime and he is Still Here even after all the madness he’s been through ! Sober , healthy laughing happily and having fun again just being himself ! This is so good to see even more recently in newer videos.
This video was also awesome 👍🏻 never seen it before today.
Thanks so much to Chris for having this conversation. I don’t even want to call it an interview it’s seems more chilled out and just like friends talking back and forth but that is to some extent due to Chris himself and how he treats everyone! He’s easy to talk to 🙂
Thanks to you bros for posting this video even though I am waayy late to the party 🎉 it’s always cool to see and hear Chris talk about anything really. This video of him reliving old EVH stories is pure gold !

Great tribute and thanks for sharing all the stories and everything about Eddie! Eddie has inspired me as a guitarist since a teenager off the 1978 first album! Seen Van Halen at a backyard party in Pasadena, California! This was before they hit it big in the Hollywood, California clubs! As well seen Wasp many times in concert and Van Halens too great concerts for years in the USA! Eddie is still my inspiration today 42 years later when I pick up my guitar to play so cool! EVH RIP!

Harvey Mandel aka The Snake! Chris is 100% correct about the origins of tapping. Mandel was doing it years before anyone else. Harvey mighta been over in Europe working with The Rolling Stones at the time Chris was painting his house. Harvey played on a couple tracks from the Stones Black And Blue album.

I was 8 uears old in 1978 when VH 1 came out one of my uncles let me listen to the record the day he bought it and both of us couldn't believe you could do those things on guitar. I guess you could say I grew up on Eddie. He absolutely rubbed off on me as a guitar player. My goal was to learn Ain't talkin bout Love and I way later on got the whole song figured out. So glad i was able to be alive to see Van Halen from beginning to end

There were backyard parties, van and car club parties, etc. all over the San Gabriel Valley and Mammoth played many of them. In fact there were so many of them that it was a given every weekend you came to expect to see Mammoth as the band.

Where did the way he plays come from?
I believe I can answer that in part...
Rhythmically I believe his sense of timing comes from his dad.
More specifically, he and AL used to play with their dad who was a Big Band clarinet and sax player.
Plus they grew up with that style of music in the house.....since probably the womb.
If you take I'm The One and hum it to yourself and take note where the high note is and the low note.
    Its Swing music! Lol
Ppl say he plays with a Shuffle.....thats Big Band timing.
I always wondered where his rhythmic sensibilities come from.
Then I saw an interview where he talks about his childhood and being immersed in his father's style of music...even preforming with him
    .
    ...and it all makes sense...
It also explains why he only plays with his brother.
Both were immersed in that style, but also started playing drums and guitar together.
They both "speak the same language".
