Ever heard of Colpitts and Hartley oscillators? They each can be implemented using a single BJT transistor. However, they have inductor components. If you want to avoid inductor, you can built a phase shift oscillator using a single BJT transistor. The 180 degrees phase shift feedback signal is built using a few RC filters.
It's based on the Esaki oscillator or tunnel diode. It was invented on August 1957 by Leo Esaki. A characteristic of "negative resistance" which is like counter intuitive.
