My name is Kathryn and I own and operate the Green Bank Arts Center, located just south of the Observatory on hwy. 92. Green Bank is a wonderful and lovely town, full of interesting people. Please feel free to come by and see the creations done by local artisans.
We stopped by the NRAO and took a tour whilst on vacation a few years ago, my family and I had a great time. The area seemed to be a snapshot back in time really, even more so than my hometown in rural Michigan. We are a family that appreciates science and education though we still very much love the old ways of life and try our best to melt the two. I love places that the cellphone doesn't function, though they are harder to find anymore. No bars will put a smile on my face every time. I am an RF engineer so that's probably why I don't mind getting away from it all. Thanks for the video!
Forreal!!! How is this the ONLY place of its kind to exist in US… we need more places like this tbh… I live only a few hours away from Green Bank so I hope to visit soon
I used to go to school there. It was the early 70s and the original 300ft telescope (that collapsed in 1988) was there then. Had some classmates who’s parents were cousins and others who’s parents were Astro physicists. Weird combo but I liked it.
reminds me of my life on a small island in the Caribbean, no roads, no cars, no phones, no electricity, no water service, no pollution...just peace and quiet...and coconuts... perfect
Jules Rensch, and then comes winter! In fact, the existing telescope was built to replace the one that collapsed under the weight of the snow (and a bad gusset plate) in the 1990s. I'd hate to have been the guy who made the call to his supervisor that day!
I want this! Although, I am very happy about the "availability" and the directness of some services, especially connected to health and education, I am so fed up with the fast pace that this new way of life is all about.
Chevy SparkEV, there is no WiFi allowed, but there is certainly wired residential Internet service available for anyone with landline telephone service. The Observatory itself uses Internet service because of its scientific mission. In fact, low-level WiFi is now permitted to within a relatively short distance of the Green Bank Radio Telescope (GBT).
They probably use cable internet, or maybe dial up, lol. Just no wireless connection, so you have to have a cord hooking your laptop to use the internet while you take a dump, or read the back of a shampoo bottle the old fashioned way.
I am guessing that a device like that would not work anyway because if there is no cellular towers or Wi-Fi to RECEIVE the signal, it would be useless. I am going there tomorrow.
@@ussco We spent an entire weekend at the facility but did not explore the community. I could live there probably. The people that worked at the Observatory were very nice people.
Just curious....what kind of research the telescope does that benefits the human race? is it really necessary for them to have it to sustain human lives? Or just a waste of money?✌
It’s a waste of money. Government scientists are essentially overpaid welfare queens let’s be honest. We don’t need to pay some shmuck to look at space for hours when we could be using that money to pay off the national debt

HI!!!! DID THE FUNDING CONTINUE?? WHAT IS THE LONGEVITY OFF THE SET UP OUTLOOK??
would love to visit some time

This is where I want to live. Much less controlled. Much more simple life
Marco Polo This sounds like a great place to live.

This was a long time ago but it’s nice to live there
ALittleBitTwisted, this was produced in the last 3-5 years. Unless you're 10 years-old, it is not "a long time ago."
I hear you😄

Jules Rensch please elaborate. That sounds awesome!

If you like that so much, why don't you just go and live there.
Really liking these videos. Keep up the great work

No internet? You can have internet without wireless, such as DSL, cable, even over plain old telephone system using dialup modems.
Probably not worth it for companies to set this up for just a few people.
Maybe for a reason. But keep chiming along on yours till the end of time.
I would like to email or write letters to a penpal from that area. I have to live there.
Why does having no internet mean all these people are living in 1950s lifestyle. The internet is not everything
They probably want to. I do.
NOBODY said "no internet." It said "no WIFI" dummy! They can have cable or DSL Internet. Pay attention.
How do the FBI spy on all these people without internet

very well said.
It's heavenly 🤗
They’ve reverted back to their old-school analog methods.
No cell, no wi-fi? Sounds like heaven.
I wish they can update this story. I would love to live in a place like that.
Pretty Cool! Glad someone out there is interested in exploring outer space! Our future depends on it.
so beautiful place!, it´s almost like Malargue, Argentina, where is the Pierre Auger Observatory, :)
I wish I could move there
Dont lose the battle. Keep it free of radio
Are they still cutting funding for 2018? If so, is Green Bank going to be allowed to have cellular services?
Heaven 💝
Hi can I use please part of your video for my channel's trailer?
I'm coming
it's like...it's like the town is stuck in time....wooo spookyXD
I need to live here or some place like it .
Woot. Wild and Wonderful.
Can’t they put something that blocks the signal so they can use those things indoors
Do they have tv?
YAAASS! AND IT CAME THROUGH TO US FROM THE LAND OF THE POWAHATAN DYNASTY ABORIGINALS BLESS THIS LAND!
Can Cable tv still exist in the Quiet Zone?
Wow things have changed in the past years
How has it changed? Is wifi still banned? I love this idea.
With all the restrictions can a person have life alert or are they banned?

@@JRattlesnake Hello. Did you ever visit this town? If so, how was it?

Felix is a Chaldean
I want to live there! Or stay there. Away from addicted humans on phones
I need to move here so I won't get fried by 5g but I still will go out where wifi is to pay my game 🤷🏾
Nice

Well, at least they won't be getting fried by 5G. 😂
That's what I was thinking this is why I need to move over there
@@jonthegod00 I hate 5G, its right up there with "upgrade to the ufo cult to submit yourself"

Arjel Onde, you can find your answer online. Once you've had the diligence to do the research you can then tell the rest of us.
It’s a waste of money. Government scientists are essentially overpaid welfare queens let’s be honest. We don’t need to pay some shmuck to look at space for hours when we could be using that money to pay off the national debt
They can't do this leagally. It is a violation of their rights as Americans/.
You're wrong. People are not getting wifi taken from them. They already know it's banned there, so you already know with what you're getting involved.
