Judy and Mary's guitarist is one of my fav, so creative, with only 1 guitar in the band he improvises so much during the lives to provide such full sound. i believe on the albums they may use multiple tracks, but on the lives he tries to somehow meld both tracks. it's been a long time since i listened to them tho, this brought back so many memories :)

Ah, Samurai-X anime, the 90's, so reminiscing... ^^
Yeah that's Judy and Mary, that guitar is always chaotic, that vocal always sound improvisational, and that chaotic noise at the start (before the guitar kicks in) is actually part of the song. And then we have the drum and bass providing structure to make it sound like a song. :P
No context needed, it's just them doing them, and we like them like that hahahaha
I thought this song sounded familiar. I loved that show when I was a kid. Also, the riffs in this song remind me of the Twisted Metal 2 theme.

This is one of the songs that got me into jrock/jpop as a millennial kid
Sobakasu means "Freckles". This song was used as the opening theme song for the 90's anime series Rurou ni Kenshin (also known as "Samurai X" in some countries).
I hear that some of the song lyrics about Yuki Isoya experiences (some lyrics that was, when it translated to English says, left ear)
Japan's most iconic punk pop group. Yuki's vocal style is an acquired taste, simultaneously melodic and off-key sour, cutesy and brash, intriguing and cringe worthy. It's a bit like Joey Ramone and Annie (from the musical) had a love child.

These were put up last fall. Not many people have found them yet.
Came back to say if you want some of their songs that's a little more hard hitting, you may like "Music Fighter", Lovely Baby", "Stereo Zekai", "Judy's a Punk Girl", "Dynamite", "DoShiyo", "Hitotsudake", and "Popstar" (those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head lol).
Also wanted to request maybe some Gackt as well as L'arc En Ciel (another 90's band along with JAM here) you may know the lead singer HYDE and he has some side and solo pieces with his other band VAMPS.
AND as rock fans I feel like you guys would enjoy Miyavi, but like early Miyavi....cause he was a problem (in a good way) lol
So the cool thing about the innocent sounding voice and melody matched against the heavy guitar intro is it really fits the vibe of the anime it was used in. Rurouni Kenshin is about this samurai that became a war hero by being a souless assassin. His past fights would be pretty well defined by the rough and chaotic sounds in the beginning and the heavy metal sounding riff. But the series, specially the beginning arc that this is the opening to, is really about how he leaves that past behind to live a regular, happy life. He is pretty quirky and funny and quite innocent when he is not having flashback of his psycho killer days. I think that's one of the reasons why this opening is so beloved by so many, it really does fit the vibe. Well, that and the amazing guitar in this song. It's basically a guitar solo that goes all throughout the song and it's actually pre-written, it's not improvisation.
Sobakasu! This song always gives me chills every time I listen to it. Judy and Mary x Samurai X! Childhood core memories right there!🤘
Besides Tokyo Jihen and L'arc en Ciel, Judy and Mary is one of my favorite band from japan from 90s era.. unique and genius.. takuya as a guitarist doing much "running chord" rhythm.. to bad the were disbanded..

I didn't know that you reacted to Judy and Mary.
I've just left a comment in Wave Potter's reaction to the band "moshimo" and suggested to react to this song, because the lead vocal reminded me of Yuki especially from the way she sang.
I never got into Judimari back in the 90s, only because the vocal wasn't my cup of tea, but otherwise found them experimental and unique.
After leaving the comment, I started to go through their other stuff and I really liked them.
And shes not even at her prime in this performance, the singer. Opening theme from the anime Samurai X. Pretty hard to cover also..
Cute song for a show about a serial killer trying not to kill but being taunted to do so for the whole series,

By the way, the bass player used to play heavy metal. The drummer is into jazz. And as you can see, the guitarist as well. This band started when three professionals discovered a talented girl.
The concept of this band is the epitome of Japanese culture. It expresses the youth of Shibuya & Harajuku, mixing interesting things from around the world into fashion. They behave like children even as adults, enjoying both decadent culture and nostalgia. I would be happy if I could watch more reactions from this band. Please do it when you feel like it.
JAM was around long befor all these other Japanese heavy bands you are more familiar with ! its a different style and era all together ! and Mr Takuya always played crazy funky guitar riffs ! their song Kujira 12-Guo is an awesome song with some really funky riffs ! check it out if you havent already 👍

You may like previous song more, but this is their biggest hit: charts & sales wise. Not surprising, anime openings/endings were intended as promotion (with few exceptions)
If you are into Japanese stuff, you just have to accept some girls (especially pop performers/idols) squeak (use baby voices) on purpose. It's considered cute. I don't think so, but japanese are obsessed with cute stuff so let them be :)

This song does have childish lyrics, Yuki is singing to her stuffed animals about being dumped. Japan has a big Kawaii culture rthat goes way beyond music. Police Stations will ahgve their own stuffed animal as a mascot for example.
Judy and Mary (prnounced Marie fyi) have other more adult songs like Great Escape (drinking). Back to the song, yeah it's the theme for an Anime so it's not as rocking as they get. I still think Yuki is a great frontwoman. For all the guitarist improvises, so does she and you don't see a lot of that in Japan. Radio is another good song, Judy is a Punk Rocker, Blue Tears, they have a lot of good songs.
