Tim Curry is a great actor, but he's done scarier roles -- Rooster in Annie, Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers and Dr. Frankenfurter in Rocky Horror Picture Show come to mind. There's others. After Oliver Reed in the musical Oliver!, it's really hard to match that level of scary.
Just some randomer replying to your comment from 6 months ago 😂 Oliver Reed is incredible, but Andy Serkis did a show stopping and terrifying portrayal too!
This film was 1 of the 4 which seemed to always be playing at my grandies' place. I remember being struck by how resentful - + more, how _creeped out_ , in this version - Nancy was of Fagin. As an adult, I have the better awareness to spot some really sneaky stuff in there. It makes Fagin's greasiness all the worse, in retrospect.
Tim Curry is a great actor but was terribly miscast as Bill Sikes. Sikes is suppose to be intimidating and Curry is anything but. Here you felt Fagin was in charge of Sikes
Curry seems plenty intimidating when he threatens Oliver (and Nancy). Having Bill be a charming looker adds to the unpredictability of his rage -- AND makes it less of a mystery as to why Nancy never leaves him.
Elin Lloyd I don't think. I know. And I know he's a monster. He tried to ruin Christmas for Belle and the Beast, Almost destroyed Ferngully, Tried to kill Hubie and take Marina for his bride, turned Brad and Janet into statues and put them in his floor show, and almost captured Kevin McCallister at the Plaza Hotel in New York.
jasminne mcdonald ha lol your talking about him as a actor he has played many villains. and most of them are cartoons he just did voices for them. you come across as looney. it not real. it just him acting in movies.
Sorry but this is some strange casting. Fagin is supposed to be this little old man who fears the violent brute Bill Sikes. George C. Scott was a big, intimidating guy. Tim Curry, well, isn't.
Jamie Shutler That's why I still think Ron Moody and Oliver Reed nailed the relationship between the characters the best. Reed was downright terrifying as Sykes, and the sympathetic "victim of circumstances" portrayal of Fagin was brilliant. Especially in the "They Squarks!" scene.
Jamie Shutler I haven't seen the 1985 one, but of the ones I've seen(1948, 1968, 1982 2005) I still think the 1968 musical version understood this character relationship the best. Sikes simply snapping his fingers terrified Fagin. He openly shows consistant concern for Nancy's wellbeing and warns Dodger not to go anywhere near Bill ever(one of the most surprising scenes of the musical, he acts like a caring father to Dodger).
Tim curry is one of the most underappreciated actors.
Would've loved to hear Tim Curry sing "My Name." He'd have knocked it out of the park
Love Tim Curry! That voice is the sound of childhood movies. ^_^
Tim Curry and George C. Scott! Wonderful.

The actress, the name escapes me, just came off from playing as Guinevere in Excalibur 1981.
Cheri Lunghi.
I wish Tim Curry had done more period dramas. He was well suited for the genre.
Oliver is babies. Bill/Tim is very handsome
Tim Curry as Long John Silver from Muppet Treasure Island, 1996. You havet to return to Bristol to go on Trail at Magistrate's Court.
I love Tim Curry, but Oliver Reed knocks the character out of the park.
I am both intimidated and laughing!
As much as I respect Curry, Oliver Reed IS Bill Sykes

@@mummyD1922 Olver Reed is the quintessential Bill Sykes.
@@mummyD1922 David O' Hara from the '97 Disney version wasn't too bad either- not Reed levels of scary but definitely intimidating.

His voice here reminds me of Nigel Thornberry from The Wild Thornberries!
He voices him.
Oliver Reed‼️‼️‼️‼️

I thought Tim Curry was a tongue-in-cheek villain, Bill Sikes ain't!
Run for your lives!! It's the monster!! AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't be crazy he is not the devil he is a human being nothing evil or nasty about him.
Elin Lloyd It's probably a disguise he uses to fool people. But I can see behind that mask of his.
jasminne mcdonald what makes you think like that about him ???

I agree tim is just too lovable to play a character as vicious and unhinged as bill sikes oliver reed really terrified me when I saw oliver.
They should have switched roles and aged Tim Curry up like they did with Alec Guinness in the 1948 David Lean version.
ABSOLUTELY!
Is this available on DVD or Netflix or anywhere online ?
Free right now on RUclips. The exact title is "Oliver Twist (1982 TV movie) George C. Scott, Tim Curry, Michael Hordern"
What year was this made?
1982. Well, fall 1981 was when they shot it.
It was made in October and November 1981. You can when sikes and Oliver walk to the burglary, the ground is covered in leaves.
No ollie Reed
I love Tim Curry, but Oliver Reed WAS Bill Sikes.
Be funny if bill first apperared singing sweet transvestite lol
Very oddly cast and costumed film.
