  • TROUBLE WITH SOPHIE - EP04 - The doll's funeral
Sophie decides to organise an event to commemorate the death of her irrevocably damaged doll. The children organise a procession which soon turns into a water fight. Sophie suddenly gets the idea to wet her hair to make it curly like Camille's. Of course, she catches a cold and gets sick. Thanks to her mother's care and attention, she is soon right as rain.

Actually if you think about it its not bc of sophie, its all bc of her mother and father and bc of how her mother and father let society impact the way they raises their child -think of madame Fleurville and how she doesnt ridicule punish and berate but seeks to uderstand forgive and grow, look how secure Camille and Magdalene are. Sophie is a 7 year old girl who most likely also has adhd(all the symptoms are showing in her behaviour and reasoning) in an era where girls were raised to be wives at ages as young as 14 and the parents left the children to be taken care of by strangers. The children would rarely feel love and acceptance from their actual parents and were raised to fit a mold (mostly the parents's mold- as you can see by the way in which the mothers portrait in sophies room is shown in many shots in this particular episode and how sophie wants to resemble her mother so much -like how she was literally dressed and had her hair made the same way her mom had or cuts her eyebrows to resemble her mother and so on bc her reasoning is that if she is like her mother she will be perfect and she will finally earn her mothers love and acceptance which is monstrous if you think about it, to make a child EARN love and acceptance. Also the consequence of trying to be like her mother is the loss of self and that opens a whole other can of worms, the consequencesof which can be seen throughout the show, like how short tempered she is and always seeks to prove herself by looking and acting like someone else and never wondering what is the best she can be from within. Why? Because she as a person is never made to feel like she is good enough so therefore all good things must be copied from outside and she feels like she is wasting time if she looks within. Also where can she exercise the patience needed to find and perfect something from within when the adults in her life rarely exercise patience with her in a way she can comprehend and are always seeking to finish dealing with her as fast as possible?). She also is not listened to. The mother is always making her into what she thinks a lady should be instead of listening to her childs prefferences and helping her learn how to compromise. Instead of making her have a simple hairstyle she couldve easily modeled understanding and patience by allowing her one ribbon and emphasising on how her hair looks best in a certain way because her hair is the best for her( which is smth sophie lacks not bc she doesnt have it within her but because it is demanded of her yet her parents never show her that, they demand and punish and shame her, in their mind sophie and her behaviour is one and the same and not a reaction to their poor empathy and communication skills. In what world is it normal to laugh at a 7year old and raise them to care about appearances but deny their expression in that?). But with the ammount of instances in which sophie had to endure shaming and punishment and ridicule from her own parents-adults at that- she would need a lot of compensatory moments in which she would be able to express and actually get what she wants when she wants it and to experience the consequences (within reason of course, dont let her stand in the rain lol) and let her pull her own conclusions from said actions and the conclusions shouldnt be given by the adult. The adult should be there as a supportive and protecting person that would let her exercise and experience things in a careful setting. Eventually sophie would come to trust her mother and not need to constantly feel like she should fix things herself and be perfect and do things on her own to be accepted and praised. You can actually see how she speaks to herself in her head when she speaks to her doll. Its a common thing with people with adhd and neurodivercence to feel as though they need to fix themselves that there is always smth wrong with them that they need to be perfect and that they need to perform perfectly on the first try to be accepted. The show is called troubles with sophie but its an adaptation from the novel trilogy first of which is sophies missfortunes- That would be a more accurate translation. She is actually undergoing abuse and every day is a microtrauma that contributes to CPTSD when she grows up. And if you seek to compare her with paul, first of all he is suffering from a different kind of abuse, he is forgotten and made to feel unwanted and most children in his position become people pleasers and seek to be as invisible and less of a burden as possible. It is yet another form of losing yourself. And you can see the hurt in him when he teases sophie and they fight eachother. They cant hurt the ones who hurt them-which is the adults- so they hurt eachother but then realise they are the same, victims, so they make up and protect eachother and are terribly confused all the way. The real villains here are the adults. And also think about why you would be more inclined to blame a literal 7year old who hasnt even a fully developed brain and is fully dependent of others and is constantly traumatised by the people that should love and care for them, rather than the actual agressors bc it says smth about the way you experienced your life so far. It is very common to blame the child rather than the adult when you as a child were abused by the adults in your life and you had to learn to blame yourself to survive.

6:54, 22:15 and 7:00 are my favorite shots of this episode because I like barefoot cartoon characters, especially if they're in there pajamas!😀
