  • In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a piece of green oak into a natural edge vessel. when woodturning a piece like this I like to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. This piece of Oak was saved from a fire wood pile. The finish is shellac and Hampshire sheen high gloss.

    Watching this, in some really neat new angles, like from on the top like that was very cool!! This also reminded me of what Michaelangelo said about his carving into marble, that sometimes the piece is already there, he just brought it out of the block of stone. It's as if this beauty was already there, you brought it out perfectly Mr Jack Mack. You certainly have such a masterful way of bringing out the best of what nature and God above have slightly hidden from us mortals. Still so very difficult to pick a favorite.... I think we can have more than one, thank heavens for that!! Grin 😊. Keep em coming please. Thank you kindly for sharing. 👍✨

    you blow my mind 👌 The medullary rays round the edge look amazing 👏 have you ever tried suffocating oak with ammonia? Wood + pot of ammonia sealed in a bag. its amazing, it reacts with the tannins and sends the wood chocolate brown leaving the rays white :) ps i have nicked half of your inventions for getting things on the lathe or assisting, that grippy rubber stuff for holding bowls 👌👌👌 and the other half I'm not capable of using yet 🤣

    Great vase, great video, great performance!
    I see that you applied the finish to the damp wood immediately after turning. Won't that cause any problems if you then place the vase in your home?
    I pre-turn wet wood, then leave it to dry in an airy cellar for a few months, then finish turning and only then apply the finish. I always thought that was necessary.
    Please let me know!

      @@JackMackWoodturning Hay Jack my name is Mark but everyone has called me Grizz like forever. If you like you can call me either of the two 10-4. I know I use the word brother all the time because to me everyone was created equal and we are all one big family 10-4.

    • @GRIZZ357
      @GRIZZ357 2 года назад

      LOL no , but my outdoor skills are off the hook and I have the ability to find bad guys who run into the woods or mountains. I have also adopted the Eagle and the Wolf as my outline to live a good life. The Bear bring strength to the family, the Wolf brings loyalty to the pack and the Eagle brings honor and integrity to it's mate. I've carried that name for the last thirty years or more. Thanks for asking your the first brother. There is a lot more to the story but I don't want to bore anyone with all that. enjoy your day with your family

    A really nice piece. Well done & thanks for sharing. Must admit when you started i didn't figure out the end shape. was this planned or emergent, or a bit of both? I like it when shapes emerge.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 года назад

      Hi ray, thanks for following along.
      Yes a bit of both, the rim and general shape of the finished piece are planned. I could take this piece to the bandsaw and make the turning faster and easier, but you don’t know what hidden features you could be cutting out when you do that, so it’s nice to peak it back like an onion to find the form that best suits the wood. The emergent aspect of what makes this kind of work fun for me, and this is fun, in my day job I turn the same shape bowls over and over again. This channel is my way of exploring more of my woodturning ideas and attempting to keep my flame for woodturning burning 🔥
      More videos every Wednesday and Saturday so bang that subscribe bottom to get notifications of my next video.
      It’s nice to have you along for the ride and I always welcome your feedback and options on my work.
      Cheers
      Jack.

      @@JackMackWoodturning Well, Jack, if your day job is turning bowls i expect in your leisure that you'll be going more and more arty and experimental. Great! I wonder if you could advise of your finish without necessarilly mentioning makers - whatever is the on line etiquet. You also express yoursef very well in words "attempting to keep my flame for woodturning burning". i think that's often a challenge - to keep one's passion (whatever it might be) alive and to neitther go stale nor bored.Just as much as passion can diminish over time so, too, it can grow and take new channels. Interesting to see how many skilled turners go quite arty - in form, colour, texturing, finishing and, indeed, in trying/experimenting with new combinations. Light years ahead of me but at least i have the Mrs lightly punching me on the shoulder whilst saying: "You never do the same thing twice!" That's not quite true but i do like to think that every piece we turn is unique, thanks to nature if nothing else!

    Great Video! Thumbs Up 👍🏽 and Subscribed. Thanks for Sharing! I have a question (or two); Where can I find an Arbor Adapter for Sanding with a Grinder like the one you have? What is it called? Thanks In Advance! Have A Super Week!.....Gus

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 года назад

      Thanks Gus.. 🤙🏻 .. haha I should sell these things the amount of internet they get. If you in the uk your grinder will be M14... USA M10 I think. So your after a m14 (or 10) 50mm hook and loop backing pad. Best bet is to buy them in bulk, for about £1 per unit rather than the £10-£15 per unit if you buy a single one from eBay etc.. Ali express is good for the pads and the sanding discs.. I buy 100-300 at a time but I make over 1000 bowls per year in my day job. Let me know if you have any other questions or drop me a line via Instagram
      Enjoy your weekend.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  3 года назад +4

      Thanks for watching, the first end image is straight after turning and the rest of the end images are taken a week after, i keep it fairly warm in my workshop so the piece being only 1/4 inch thick walls is pretty much dry ( or at least has done the majority of its movement) in that time.
      The most important thing to prevent cracking when turning green wood is to have a constant wall thickness, it won’t always prevent cracks but it will help, the form also plays a role. Some shapes will be more prone to cracking than others.
      This piece hardly moved which is actually a bit of a shame 😆
