  • Vanessa Atler, born on February 17, 1982, in Valencia, California, showed an early affinity for gymnastics and athleticism. From a young age, her extraordinary flexibility, strength, and natural talent set her apart. Recognizing her potential, her parents enrolled her in gymnastics classes, setting her on a path that would lead to a remarkable career in the sport.
Vanessa's gymnastics prowess quickly became evident as she progressed through the ranks. She trained at the Charter Oak Gliders Gymnastics Club under Beth Kline Rybacki and Steve Rybacki,, where her dedication and hard work began to pay off. Her performances in national competitions earned her a reputation as one of the brightest young talents in the sport.
In 1996, at the age of 14, Vanessa burst onto the international scene by winning the all-around gold medal on the junior level at 1996 U.S. Gymnastics Championships. She was less than two months shy of being eligible for the 1996 Olympic Games. A subsequent rule change by the FIG left her ineligible for the World Championships until 1999.
Her first senior national title came when she tied Kristie Powell in 1997. It was thought to be the first of many. It would be her only senior national all-around title.
As Vanessa transitioned into senior competitions, she continued to make waves. She was a member of the U.S. National Team and represented the United States in various international events - showing tremendous prowess on vault, floor exercise and balance beam. Atler struggled with the uneven bars throughout her career - which generated attention from the media and exacerbated the issue.
While Vanessa Atler's gymnastics talent was undeniable, her journey was not without challenges. The intense pressure and expectations that came with being a rising star took a toll on her mental and emotional well-being. The media and public scrutiny of her appearance and performances added to her struggles - Atler ultimately left her coaches to train under Valeri Liukin and failed to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games under Bela Karolyi's helm as the national team coordinator for USA Gymnastics.
After retiring from the sport, Atler appeared on 'Starting Over' to move her life forward. She is now a happy mother of two, author, gymnastics coach and choreographer. We had the opportunity to chat with her on a 2020 edition of TSL Live.

Vanessa has always been one of my favorite gymnasts of all time. To this day, I am still obsessed with her 1998-1999 floor routine and the way she vaults. I'm still pissed that she didn't go to Sydney, she might've been the only gymnast who could've outrightly medalled on vault, floor or even beam. She also could've boosted the vault and floor scores in the team final. I also love who well spoken she is, especially when talking about Jamie's experience with the Rybackis. I love that even though her experience was positive, she did not use that to invalidate Jamie and instead acknowledged that the gymnasts can have different experiences and that all their feelings are valid

@@SabrinaVoineaSStolenMedal I do think if there were an Olympics in 98 or 99, before her injury in Paris, she could have won medals on vault, floor, and maybe even beam. Possibly on vault in 97 too. Obviously in 2000 she wasn't good enough anymore to probably, as she had declined, although the bronze on floor would have been wide open with all the mistakes.

What a great interview. I like that she will critique behavior without demonizing the person. I was impressed when she handled not being part of the team. I was fuming. I thought even with the errors, she had done enough to be selected.

She's an amazing person. She's given us the opportunity of watching a real person with great talent show all her vulnerability, which is beautifully human and inspiring. I've always loved her, I am and will always be a huge fan and admire her, whatever she will do in her life!

Wow. This appeared on my feed today. I havent been on this channel for a while and this was exactly what i needed today. I remember Vanessa adler from back when I was obsessed with gymnastics. i was always amazed by the sheer power she exuded on floor. i also remeber the 'starting over' episode. I am on my own mental health journey and a lot of what Vanessa is saying about how she was such a people pleaser and afraid of being yelled at and worried about what people might think of her, etc, really resonates. It is nice to see her acknowledging the fact that these are aspects of her personality without judgment. That there is a lot of strength in her self acceptance and vulnerability. it has taken me years to reach a point where I felt I belong and think positive about the future and still not quite there, yet. This interview showed me that not being "there yet" isnt a bad thing; it just means you are on your way. Thank you for reposting this, Dave. I really needed it.

Watching Vanessa was so frustrating. She was such a fabulous gymnast who had a mental issue with the bars. She was fantastic on the vault and the beam. When she got hired to coach in Valencia my daughter was taking classes. Vanessa had a very positive personality and was nice to everybody. Way back in the day I taught gymnastics and that was my favorite job. I competed at a basic level in the 1980s and loved every minute of it. I had a low balance beam and it was the basic wood with no padding. I would take the beam outside and take the mattress off my bed and put it under the beam. I spent so much time practicing on my beam at home that it became my best event. I remember competing and I would eat it but it never upset me and I’m glad that I was able to laugh at myself. When I was 14 I had a brand new floor routine and had stepped it up with my tumbling passes. The first time I competed using my new routine I had a fantastic first pass. I was so happy that I landed it perfectly that I forgot my routine. It only took me a second to remember it but it was funny. I think having someone like Vanessa is a great idea. She understands the stress of the sport and is able to understand how different gymnasts struggle with completely different situations.

Dave, do you mind sharing the recent interview with Jamie Dantzsher? I couldn’t find it. Thank you for this interview. Vanessa is fantastic. It really struck me the trauma that child athletes go through when she said she had to pull herself off the couch and go get a job after Olympic trials. Just like poof. All those years of sacrifice and training and dieting and drama for one singular goal and suddenly it’s all over. She is incredibly resilient and happy to see her thriving now.

I remember being so disappointed when Vanessa was left off the team. She clearly was super talented and had much higher score potential than others who made the team. You could tell it was a rigged selection and not based on merit. It was obvious she was out of favor with the Karolyis. What a joke. The poor showing by the US in 2000 was no surprise - they left their best at home. Great interview.

    • @dougierichardson484

They won a bronze medal so not a poor showing. Even with Vanessa on the team, particularly a declining Vanessa who was headcasing some at the Nationals meets, they were never going to Challenge Romania or Russia for gold or silver anyway that year. So bronze was the best they could ever hope to do no matter who they put on the team, and they achived it.

I really enjoy these types of interviews, a lot actually, but the videos playing in the background, when the volume is on, it's really distracting. If it's a skating video and there's music, it's ok, but speaking in the background, makes me feel like I have schizophrenia.

Yeah, *that* was a bitch move. She knows how Bela is, especially about food. She herself has been sneaked food when it looked like she needed it. (Kathy Johnston Clarke said she found Shannon after that disastrous '93 event finals beam routine, and gave her something to eat, because Shannon was sick and pale and looked/felt like crap.)
If Shannon was going, she was going for bars and beam. Atler was never even a threat to her. Just petty and mean for no reason.
