- Vanessa Atler is an American former elite gymnast and was considered one of the best after the success of Magnificent Seven at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. She emerged into the gymnastics scene after winning Bronze in the All Around at 1995 US Olympic Festival, behind Olympian Kerri Strug and Heather Brink. She then went on to win silver in the All Around at 1995 US Junior Nationals. In 1996, Vanessa was the US Junior National All Around champion. She continued her success in the All Around by becoming a co-champion at 1997 US Nationals where she started competing as a senior. She then won silver in the All Around at both 1998 and 1999 US Nationals. She was the Vault and Floor Exercise champion at 1998 Goodwill Games, a competition with a deep field of gymnasts including Olympians Svetlana Khorkina, Simona Amanar, and Elena Dolgopolova. Vanessa was regarded as the top US gymnast in the late 90s but change in coaches, extreme pressure from people, severe ankle injury, and eating disorder all created negative impact on the young and very talented gymnast. She was considered world class in her best events: Vault, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise. She was the first female gymnast to ever perform a laidout Rudi Vault. Her signature first tumbling pass on Floor Exercise was a Double Layout + Punch Front + Stag Jump.

It’s awesome that she was able to give the coaching environment that was the opposite of what she had.
Yes, & the same goes for Dominique Moceanu. As coaches they can be the change they want to see.
Miss her! Wish we got a better look at her 1999 worlds experience, she was looking so good but her mental games were a big problem at that meet with Steve and Beth. Glad to see her happy and excited about gymnastics again! I’m a gymnastics based channel and i posted a video of Vanessa’s signature first pass for 2 minutes straight!
i just want to say i was looking her up because i have been coached by steve and beth myself. they have changed a lot and so has the world of gymnastics since then. they are incredible coached but definitely strict
@@stellaaa.14 beth and steve are great coaches! i just think they weren’t the right fit for vanessa after a certain point, but it wasn’t necessarily because of something they did wrong.
We your fans, love you Vanessa and appreciate your honesty!!!!!
Atler is such a sweetheart. It is a little upsetting to hear her say she felt as if she didn't deserve her Goodwill Games golds are she was handed them. Granted the Goodwill Games scoring was suspect and pro American in general (Maloney's beam gold was a big joke, the American guy who won rings was suspect, and the scoring of the womens All Around even though Moceanu probably deserved the win with the actual performances) but I did think she probably deserved them. I agree with her she didn't do her absolute best vault and floor performances compared to a few of her others in 98 and 99 but everyone else on vault had an easier 2nd vault, the only one I can see who was really robbed is Vega, and on floor she had harder tumbling than Amanar who had really downgraded from 96, and Amanar can't dance for squat. Either way it shows her underlying lack of confidence in herself and amazing talent which was part of her ultimate downfall along with a lot of other factors and bad luck against her that combined.
It’s nice to hear the backstory of all that was going on during those years, as someone who watched it unfold on TV as a kid, loved watching Vanessa’s gymnastics, and was always rooting for her. I appreciate her being willing to relive those times in this discussion and being so transparent as well. She seems to be doing great, very happy for her.
Thank you so much for taking the time to arrange that interview, and sharing that with us. You got a lot of interesting information from Vanessa, stuff that fans love! This new generation of gymnastics fans must know of all of Vanessa's achievements and amazing gymnastics skills!
It is amazing how Larry Nassar mis-diagnosed a broken ankle! He basically ruined her because everything went wrong since then.
Of course he misdiagnosed. He isn't even a real doctor, he wasn't qualified or educated to be a doctor in Texas period under law if I recall. So even when he tried to do real doctor work he was utterly useless. It shows the sheer incompetence, sloppiness, inadequacy, and corruption among the USGA that he ever got any kind of position in the first place.
Vanessa is so honest and insightful. Thank you for the interview.
Vanessa was a talented gymnast, and more importantly, she seems to be a phenomenal person: thoughtful, humble, mature. Time has been her friend and she’s learned so much. In fight or flight situations, she tends to be a fleer and so am I, so I totally get her struggle to communicate with others and address conflict, as she described in the situation with the Rybackis. I love where she is right now and I have no doubt she’ll contribute even greater things within the sport of gymnastics.
I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and I remember the first time I ever saw her on ESPN. I was amazed at how powerful and sophisticated she was - and still is to this day. I think everyone was sad she didn't make the 2000 team but not at all disappointed with her!
She still has that million dollar smile
So happy shes speaking out now.
Her smile is infectious 😍. Still the same charismatic Vanessa we all fell in love with from the mid 90s until now. 🥰
@@ephraimapostol2605 She is a wonderful person and such a talent. I swear while she had some problems by 2000, there was also some corruption and politics against her. The Rybackis were a powerful force in US gymnastics then and while from 98-99 you sensed sometimes there was bias and partiality in favor of her from judge and USGA members, by 2000 there was a strong bias and partiality against her now. She was out of favor. All the little signs were there from overly negative commentary on NBC, to some of her scores, to Bela's comments, to just the overall vibe. I think they didn't want her on the Olympic team no matter what she did and she sensed that.
My favourite gymnast! Love seeing you all grown up into a lovely woman!
I love Vanessa Atler and would love the chance to interview her!!
Thank you for this. What a lovely, articulate lady. Very interesting and insightful, answered a lot of questions I had.
She was my coach at American kids 🥲
steve and beth… her old coaches. where my coaches
@@stellaaa.14 oof I bet they were more strict than her
Omg Vanessa!! I want to meet her or talk to her omg I'm a big fan!! 😭😭😭
Talking to her is just like a breath of fresh air, she is full of humility and I am glad that she is surrounded now by very happy people especially her whole family. And knowing that she recovered in all aspects from those darkest moments in gymnastics, and now she continues to inspire everyone in the sport of gymnastics - these are just amazing and so so proud of her.
@@ephraimapostol2605 She is!! I am so very proud of her as a fan and I am so glad I am her fan!! 🥰💕
Congratulations for your first video and interview. The interview turned out great as she tells about her family and gymnast life. Ang galing mo nAman at nakapag-interview ka ng isang sikat na gymnast. Ang galing ng connection mo, paano mo nagawa yun?! Bongga!
You really got a very inspiring interview. We want to see more. Dropping by as always -andc
This interview is a treasure!!
We love you Vanessa 💙 I was so mad when you didn't make the team😡 I didn't watch the Olympics that year. You Deserved to go!
One of the most talented athletes of all time. She had enormous skills matched enormous artistry. Certainly one of my favorites of all time. Her humility is almost comical - that she felt a sense of fraud at outscoring the best in the sport.
Congrats dear! Can't wait to see more of your interviews -andc
Nice, inspiring story.
Thank you! 🥰 Yes, very inspiring for gymnasts, coaches, athletes from any sport, and the people outside sport who are going through mental health issues.
Ang galing mo famous gymnast nakapag interview ko. Here always to support and watch your vids. -andc
Wow what a rare insight into a tremendous athlete!!!
Bravo for a job well done in this interview. Bongga Dami ng views ha. -andc
Wow, I remember more of Vanessa's gymnastics years than she does, LOL. She wrote in her diary that she was very frustrated about missing the age limit for both the 96 Olympics and 97 Worlds. She should go back and read her diaries one day. Or maybe it's too painful.
I love Vanessa, but this guy seems to have a slightly delusional view of some of her qualities. Like...to the point that even Vanessa seems gagged. Like when he says that he thinks her floor exercise showed she was a true classical dancer and was the epitome of _artistic_ gymnastics. Nessa had this momentary look like she was expecting him to tell her where she had gone that day and where she worked.
By no means am I saying she sucked, but she had had some weak spots that even she realizes. Like when she mentions her twisting form.
