Backing up discs now will have a huge benefit later. That is we have a way of keeping those games that will be tied up in licensing purgatory, or delisted on digital storefronts. So if you can digitize your games and use ODEs, or Flash carts. You in theory could play your entire physical game collection for decades. Digital is another problem.

@@jasper9291 Many reasons. But the big ones are capacity, quality of parts given that it's a physical good. Then heaven help you if you need data recovery.
But don't forget what's on that drive, assuming it's healthy can never be taken away from you. Cloud storage is not a guarantee.
I suppose you can burn them to optical discs if the files are compressed and will fit on the disc. But then again still not as reliable as a HDD/SSD.

facts my friend did that with his coolection and back it up to his google drive and PC. He gave me the link and I downloaded it and uploaded it to my google drive. I've been doing it for six years and switching PC builds or having a crappy HDD emulating and finding roms can be time consuming. I just download a full folder based on console and I don't have to worry about it.

You have to give Adam credit for backing up his entire disc based collection as that must require a ton of effort. I bet the vast majority with extensive collections wouldn't even think about it, even though disc rot is eventually going to happen. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if more than 99% of those using optical drive emulators to play images simply download the Redump sets for convenience (myself included)

I thought disc rot was a myth until I dug up some of my old PC games from the late 90's. A couple had black spots and one had deterioration around the outer edge. Luckily I've been migrating to ODEs for my consoles because dealing with worn disc drives is a huge pain. Optical discs were fine in their heyday but they haven't withstood the test of time.

    • @jOeLwAlBy
      @jOeLwAlBy 2 года назад +1

It really depends on how they were made. I'm gonna just put this out there. If they were Japanese made discs they probably gonna outlive you. If it was made somewhere with less care for quality then it might get the rot.
The majority of badly mad discs wouldn't last a decade and would be dead by now and out of circulation.
There's plenty of sega cd And maybe the Phillips CDI discs from early 90s working fine. I presume audio CDs made in the 80s are fine for the most part too.

Gosh, this brings back memories for sure. I also am one of the OG's from back then that backed up all their games.. CDRWin, CloneCD, Disc Juggler and Nero Burning ROM were some of my tools of the trade. I spent countless hours researching how to do this and that.. modded nearly all my consoles for the purpose of playing backups.. except for the PS4 (I know there is a firmware exploit for that one, but haven't gotten around to it) and well the Xbox One is still as of yet unexploitable.
On a side note, for PlayStation 1 era games, I actually found a hardware based professional CD duplicator made by TASCAM that ripped PS1 games 1:1 to blank CD-R's. It worked near flawlessly (granted the original source disc was not too scratched up), and hence no computer was needed for those games. When I get home I may leave the model number of this TASCAM duplicator for reference. Just another option if anyone had acquired something like that.
On the topic of scratched discs.. I remember how GameStop (EB Games in Canada) constantly tried to sell me their warranty on games.. Well guess what? I said no to that extra charge every time. To this day, all my games disc/cartridge still work, and are in immaculate condition. But yeah, I never understood how used games were always so bad.. I found discs from previous owners that were scratched up the wazoo and even spilled with pop drinks and gum... Seeing that kind of abuse to these discs just breaks my heart.

Thank you for making this video. I find myself returning to it rather often. I have a question regarding backing up Playstation 1 games, more specifically those PS1 games that are multi-track (i.e. where there are separate tracks on the disc from the data). When I rip the disks and check the hashes afterwards, I find that the first track, containing the data, is dumped correctly, but all the audio tracks get incorrect hashes. Is this something you have encountered, and if so do you know what the solution is? I am guessing it has something to do with "pregaps", whatever that is, but I don't know.

thanks for reminding me the headaches involved of backing up personal library.. more important to me is backing up digital exclusives that are no longer available for retail. so far i ripped my own unlock keys from my account and just have them sitting on a few hard drives with the games.

I rip and back up all optical discs I have - even music CD's, movie DVD's, and blu-rays. The last two or three DVD's I bought, they each had defective sectors that I had to send back for a refund. And these otherwise mint condition DVD's aren't even that old! Maybe ten-twelve years, tops. Forget covid, *bit rot* is the real pandemic everyone should be worried about!

I was looking into backing up all my game data and stumbled across this video. I'm looking forward to getting a LG 8164B now. But when searching I was looking to see if my drive worked for anything. I've had this Blueray disk reader since I first built my first PC. Long since upgraded and no longer use a case with a 5.25" drive bay, but I kept that disk reader. I've used it to rip audio files from some CD's to listen to on my computer. Now come to find out my LG WH16NS40 is also good for PS3 and PS4 games is a cool reason for me to keep it even longer lol.
I was wondering when I was searching for it why some of the listings were twice what I paid for it new.

(LG WH16NS40 Super Multi Blue Internal SATA 16x Blu-ray Disc Rewriter) I was reading some peeps were not able to rip 4K HDR movies.because the drive ships with the updated 1.03 firmware. edge emulation has a bunch of ROMs for consoles that don't use too much space. The ROMs in that site are not much more than 1GB because it only goes up to CD/cartridge games, no GD/DVD. I got a few 32x games from there and play them on my Kega Fusion emulator so they're great, even DS games for those who have dsemume.

Its also worth noting constant usage can burnout your console disc drives, my ps1 cd drive went bad recently, so if you can move to an ode format its beneficial for both your console and games. Secondly, slightly dipping into piracy, its very popular to condense game images in the "scene" this has caused a huge problem with dreamcast pirated games being broken or missing content. If youre using gdemu or redream youre better off ripping your original discs.

With the impending closure of the PS3 Playstation Store im backing up my PS3 Blu-Ray Discs to a external hard drive with my CFW PS3 with Multiman that I installed back in 2019. It's not about piracy it's about preservation, people forget that even when the digital age started, a ton of games never got digital releases. Here are just a few examples of PS3 games without digital releases: Genji Days of the Blade, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Katamari Forever, White Knight Chronicles 1 & 2, No More Heroes: Heroes Paradise, and so many more.

Not only modded console can be useful, which is a really good recommendation to digitalize any physical game that you got and put it on the SD card or Flash Drive. but i think they're might some people that they like to use on Emulator if people don't want necessarly needing a console, and just to buy the game legally and rip it to the computer to play it (depending on the disc they're supported for the systems). That could be also useful to digitalize some games that they don't really need a console but Games. could be maybe also useful. it's not the same feel to play it but atleast adapters exists for an original feel.

I recently discovered that my ps2 can not play duel layer discs, basically a small handful of games (like the god of wars) and DVD movies. the DVD part isn't an issue cause why would I use a ps2 for dvds. I did some reading and found that the lasers are starting to fail and that duel layer discs not reading is the first signs of this. So Im gonna start riping my games and playing them off USB or a network drive, using freemcboot so I don't wear the laser more. I might also just replace it at some point if its not to expensive

With the original xbox if you put the disk in the drive and boot to your custom dashboard that has ftp enabled, when you ftp to the xbox you will see a D folder. that's the disk drive. you can just copy that D folder to your computer and then rename it. So you don't have to dump it to the hdd first and then off the hdd via ftp you can just dump via ftp right off the disk.
Default ftp username and password most of the time is just xbox for both of them.

6:57 Can it convert multi-disk games into a single ISO? While ImgBurn and PSX2PSP usually gets the job done with such games on the PS1, Driver 2 is an exception in that when prompted to change to disc 2 it doesn't detect that you've swapped the disc.

I found your video very informative. I am interested in ripping my original xbox, ps3 and ps4 games to my PC. My question is, I also have a PS Vita, so if these files are ripped to an iso format, does this mean I would I thene be able to transfer these files to my Vita and play them on there? I know with Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 it's possibe to wirelessly play games on the PS Vita, but I would love to be able to play my games when I am away from the internet. Is this possible do you know?

I don't have that many options so for my PS1 and PS2 discs Image Burn is my go to option. You're right though that it's not the most reliable option because I've had games that ripped perfectly yet didn't function on the actual consoles. In most of those cases I geuss it's just because of scratches and the older PS1/PS2 lasers have a harder time powering through those because they're more worn down than a modern PC drive laser. But hey at least you know your PC is able to make a copy so the data is fine, you just need to resurface the disc to get it back into working order on the consoles. With DVD media I'm generally not that concerned that there is gonna be data loss since they are probably build the most sturdy out of all disc formats. With DVD the data is smooshed between 2 rather thick layers of plastic so it's a lot harder for scratches to mess with the actual data. CD however is a whole different story. A scratch on the label side of the CD is a a sure fire sign that the data is probably compromised since the data layer on CD's is situated right under the label and really isn't being protected by anything aside from that very very thin label. You can detect those scratches easily by holding the CD up to a lightsource and seeing if any light bleeds straight through the CD. In a lot of cases Image Burn can confirm that data loss because it fails to read certain sectors. I've had discs though with tiny label scratches that still worked fine on the console and ripped fine via Image Burn. Blu-Ray actually has the exact same problem as CD's except on the opposite side. The Data layer on a Blu-ray discs is being protected by a very very thin plastic foil on the bottom of the disc so if a scratch penetrates that foil it's game over for the blu-ray. At least that foil on a blu-ray disc has some scratch resistant coating so getting a scratch on there is luckily rather difficult. I have no way however to rip blu-ray game discs in any way so for me it suffices if a PS3, PS4 game installs properly on a stock console. Same with Xbox 360 discs, if it installs on the stock console it's enough confirmation for me that the disc is good. With WiiU, Wii, gamecube and original xbox games I have no way at all to rip them so the only option I have there is to just play the game and if I can beat it from start to end and see the credits than it's also enough confirmation that the disc is fine. You forgot to mention PSP games btw. PSP is very easy to rip. By softmodding a PSP the console is able to install games on the memory card and you can copy the files over to a PC by straight up connecting the PSP to it.
