When people in MA continued to elect Teddy Kennedy Senator, it made me shake my head. When Teddy tried to accuse Clarence Thomas of harassment, I wanted to vomit. But when people called him "the lion of the senate" and buried him in Arlington, that was when I was done with the Kennedys.

What happened at Chappaquiddick, should have ended Ted Kennedy's political career, but it didn't. "Ted needed to walk away" and Ted did just that, with no repercussions or accountability. Mary-Jo was left to slowly suffocate in the back of a sunken car, while the man responsible, simply went on with his life. Wow just wow.

Ted Kennedy claimed he attempted several times to save Mary Jo. When his efforts failed, he said he went back to the party and his cousin and a friend went and continued rescue efforts. None worked. When questioned why he didn't call the police until so many hours later, he said he was " in shock". What stopped anyone from the party, particularly, the alleged fellow " attempting rescuers" from not phoning the police.I was only 11 years old at the time with Kennedy fans as parents. From the South Shore of MA. At my age, I just shook my head and thought, none of this makes any sense regarding " the spin" that was put on this story. If a youngster could see the inadequate explanations, how could the adults not see it? I was repulsed by Ted Kennedy ever after.

just to clarify about the catholic faith 13:20 I went to a catholic school (the 12 years of school) run by nuns, and I can tell you without doubt that the nuns 100% said in no uncertain terms that any sex outside of marriage is a mortal sin that will condemn you to hell.
It was not a matter of interpretation, this was explicitly taught this way for years

But back in the day the 'sex outside of marriage is a mortal sin' was indeed spoken and taught to the congregation by the nuns and priests of the parish. They used no uncertain terms that could be misinterpreted, either. I think her disbelief is a product of the times, no disrespect intended.

Good commentary, Cheere. Makes one really consider the differences between the Kennedy brothers. JFK has always been so worshipped when he wasn't the best president, and Bobby, perhaps, would have been better for the country.

My dads employee and her husband were close friends with Mary Jo's parents. Her folks were so devistated, especially her mother, that her friends truly believed she could not and would not go on. Her daughter was her entire life but she gathered strength as she told reporters she was determined to find out what happened to her daughter that night. The press made somewhat of a point that MaryJo was NOT wearing any underwear and insinuated she and Ted were sleeping together. This so infuriated the poor women and she was quoted as crying out to reporters "my daughter was a maiden lady!" Soon a gaggle of Kennedy lawyers and sycophants descended on them to threaten and coerce them into shutting up. They did...for about $100G. Were they ever heard from again?
Ted Kennedy was a spoiled rotten to the core evil sociopath imo. In all the years to come, every time I would see him on TV I became naucuios!
He's in a special place down below I hope.

We Kennedy-haters used to say "Mary Jo gave her life for her country." I found out recently that McGovern begged Ted to be his VP candidate in '72, and polls showed it would have helped his dismal campaign, so a lot of voters must not have cared about his wretched character.

Ted Kennedy's autobiography, written as he was slowly being overcome by cancer, was also a very interesting read, as written from his perspective of a family insider. It was absolutely incredible to hear how extremely ill Jack was, how he thwarted death on so many occasions, among many other things. Of course, it left much to be desired where he was obliged to try to explain the death of Mary Jo.

Regarding the Catholic college and premarital sex, and eternal damnation, I can definitely see that happening; I was raised Catholic, and I was taught similarly in fact, as a child our local pastor posted in a church bulletin that missing a feast day constituted “a grievous mortal sin”. (Word for word, I remember that). So yes, I believe the author’s claim that Mary Jo Kopechne was taught that in the 1960s.

My parents (Irish Catholic immigrants to the United States)were big RFK supporters. I still remember being lifted on my father's shoulders as a 7-year-old to see Bobby when his train stopped near our small town in California on his way to Los Angeles in 1968. I also remember hearing my mother burst into tears moaning "not again" when news flashed about his assassination. The Kennedys were deplorable people who nevertheless inspired great loyalty. Hearing the details of Miss Kopechne's death is heartbreaking.

In comments below you shared interesting info about your past. I, too, was a part of the PCA denomination, being so incredibly blessed to have landed with Dr. Frank Barker, the founder of the PCA, and the man who founded Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, the place where I was born again in 1977. Frank taught me so incredibly much, and I thank God continually that HE put this wonderful man in my life for so many years. He opened up an incredible world for me. You sound as if you have had a pretty cool life so far. My oldest son graduated from Samford University in 2007. I wish all three of my children had attended Samford. Enjoying the book club.
