    can you do a video on how to use the wrist- esp on the forehand. That is a mystery to me. Backhand is easy to use the wrist, but I have no idea on the forehand.

      Hi, I'm going to be doing some more filming very soon and one of the videos will include using your wrist for forehand topspins.

    I hold the bat with the shakehand grip with a slight modification. My thumb is spread out at around 90 degree angle with the hand. Only yesterday someone pointed out that I was holding it wrong.
    But it gives me more control (to adjust the orientation) while hitting backhand shots. I am an intermediate player who have been playing with that grip for years. In fact, I made that modification because I had no control over my backhand with the original grip. Now, I feel more accurate.
    I feels good to me for now perhaps because I haven't played many advanced players. Please let me know if I am missing something!!!

    I was looking at the Nittaku Tenaly Original with the Ergo handle.
    It seems this type of bat would correct the vertical hold problem?

    Hi , shall we hold the same grip position for pushes, top spins and counter attacks?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  Год назад

      Yes, you can keep the same grip for all strokes, although many players will make very small adjustments between strokes. So if your fingers move position slightly, it is fine.

    i don't play with any of those, should I try and learn to change? When I play I have 4 fingers on the back of the bat, and my thumb on the other side. And then I spin the bat alot when the ball comes from another angel. thanks :)

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  7 лет назад

      Yes, I think you should try and change, as you'll always be limited in what you can do if you play with four fingers on the back of the bat. But when you change grip, you'll probably find it very strange to begin with and play worse. So you have to persevere. Eventually, you'll be able to play much better.

      You should change your grip as soon as possible.

    Should I always put the red side of the paddle on the front?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +1

      Hi, it makes no difference which colour you use for forehand
      and which colour you use for backhand. It’s entirely your choice.

    • @Channie0523
      @Channie0523 6 лет назад

      Are there no use of the different texture of the two colors?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад

      Well there are many different types of rubbers you can buy, which will all behave in a slightly different way. But it does not matter which colour you use for forehand or backhand. Many professional players will actually use black for their forehand, as they believe a black rubber is spinnier as it has less pigments and dyes. But for amateur players, it really makes no difference at all.

    can u tell how to loop using shakehand shallow grip the fingers are sliping

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  7 лет назад +1

      You should apply a little pressure with your thumb and index finger. Your other three fingers should loosely grip the handle. If you grip in this way, you shouldn't feel the fingers or bat slipping.

    Do you normally have the red side facing forward for hitting forehand ?

    • @TomLodziak

      No, you can choose which colour to use for forehand and backhand.

      hi Tom! well worded explanation! the red side for the forehand. why? bcz, backhand obstructs the ball hitting the paddle, so pointing red toward me is more colorful to my eye to position the paddle more centered for better control of the invisible moment of hitting the ball with the @@TomLodziak

    • @alchaik

      black for backspin. the chemical nature of black rubber is somewhat stikier. even if they marked the same, e.g., S5 68-016.
      another reason, red color facing my eyes is better for positioning the paddle for the backhand, when it obstructs the hitting moment

    Hi. I notice that my index finger moves slightly up when playing a forehand topspin. Not in the middle up, but a bit higher than straight down on the handle. I also hold my hand a little down on the handle, although very loosely.
    I feel this gives me much more room for wrist movement, but it might still be wrong?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Henrik, yes good observation. My finger does come up a little. I like the extra control this gives me. It's a bit of a bad habit! The way you hold the bat is absolutely fine and many would say is the best way to hold it. So if it feels right for you and isn't causing any issues, keep using the grip you are using right now.

      Hi Tom and Henrik quite some time ago there was advice to coaches to coach the advance technique of slightly arching the index finger while playing the forehand drive. It does work but it's not easy to do.Keeping your index finger out of the way while you play your backhand shot should be your priority Henrik. Great videos by the way Tom

    I really don't agree on 2 things you've said in this video.. First is that you use your wrist in forehand topspin and second is that a person should be able to take the bat out of your hand.. Your grip changes throughout many strokes.. When doing a forehand topspin it isnt that loose when using backhand really requires a lot of wrist and a loose grip

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  7 лет назад

      You can absolutely use a bit of wrist in your forehand topspin. You should give it a try. It helps you whip the ball more and you can get more speed and spin. Your grip in general should be loose. If too tight, your muscles will tense up, which means you will have more restricted arm movement. You will find it harder to change bat angle. And you will have less feeling when you play.

    • @adamkaram1471
      @adamkaram1471 7 лет назад

      By not loose i didnt mean the grip should be so tight.. And about the topspin using wrist feels so unnatural except when trying to hook because hooking usually needs a lot of wrist.. Other than that i dont use wrist in a regular forehand topspin and neither do i see pro players do that

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  7 лет назад

      Take a look at Timo Boll. He uses plenty of wrist in his forehand topspin.
