Ps2 era was the golden age of gaming. Lot of gems that were published since gaming back then was more adventurous with their projects and not obsessed with "How can we milk the playerbase with a unfinished game?"
I've seen many games where I can play as a member of the US military, be it the army, the marines, the air force, and the navy. As far as I know, this is the one and only game where you play as a coast guard member, and it's in a horror setting
You know what else was cool about this game? The sick flash website. Anyone remember when games had awesome flash websites? Killzone, res evil 4, cold fear... i miss the internet back then.
From the creators of Alone in the Dark New Nightmare! Comes a Cold Fear with a Cold Beer! I love the MGS2 UI and font. It's like The Thing the videogame, so much potential, but ultimately didn't penetrated the zeitgeist back then.
The Thing is being remastered by the team that did the System Shock Remake. (2023 game, not the remaster) They also remastered a bunch of classic games, and are working on the System Shock 2 remaster as well. And they are joined by the guy that did the incredible RE4 HD Project mod.
The fixed camera/over the shoulder combo is something i wish more developers would use in survival horror games. Hell Capcom should have used this idea for a resident evil game a long time ago. It's a perfect blend of classic and modern survival horror and im sure fans of both would love. I i know i do. If you're an indie dev and you plan on working on a survival horror title please consider using this idea.
The RE4 beta version did that, but I think Mikami scrapped that idea and decided to stick to over the shoulder because RE4 being so combat focused would make the camera switching between the two styles confusing, especially in big open areas like the first village fight. Sticking to a consistent style with RE4 was the right choice. However, I can see this camera combo working in more traditional survival horror games that don't focus on combat/shooting that much and are usually set in closed areas, such as the classic RE games and Silent Hill games.
Only a tiny minority wants fixed cameras and tank controls to continue to exist in RE Games, fortunately the majority of players enjoy the franchise more with over the shoulder camera view.
@@metroplex29 I mean, the most beloved game in the series (OG RE4) has tank controls, and two of the most beloved games in the series to this day (RE1 Remake and OG RE2) have both tank controls and fixed camera angles. There’s nothing wrong with tank controls and fixed camera angles, they’re just a design style. Some modern indie horror games actually use them. Personally I like both the classic and modern style of the camera and controls.
I played and finished this game 2 times (1st on PS2, then on PC) years ago, and the 3 things that really ruined my overall impression for the game was the crappy save system, which can only be used once after reaching a story checkpoint, not being able to carry healing items (3 would've been enough), and final boss fight, which required you get caught & execute a QTE trigger to actually hurt it (as shown in video). If the game had better and more standard save system, and allowed you to carry healing items, I would've more than forgiven the final boss fight itself.
this was originally how RE4 was going to play, if you look the early versions(like the Hookman for example), they have fixed camera for the exploration and over the shoulder for combat edit: the video literally mention this at 15:23 lol
I wish horror games in general used more interesting camera systems instead of "third person over the shoulder" all the time. Things haven't changed much since 2005.
Let's not go that far. Capcom has struck the perfect control scheme, and the first-person games only add variety to their formula. Fixed camera angles wouldn't be received well from the general audience, and for good reason. I love old RE games, too, but their gameplay is a thing of the past
Is Hydrophobia on the XB360 a survival horror game? I see that you can buy it on modern Xbox systems and it kinda looks survival horror-like based on the screenshots.
26:40 if I recall correctly (and it has been a long time since I checked I read up on this) that is indeed the result of the devs running out of time and having to cut out a section where you played as Ana
Good review! I see a lot of people giving this game love recently! Loved it back in the days, very underrated game. Subbed and liked, and after subbing I also saw you have videoes on so many of my favorite games!
God, when you listed the releases that surrounded this game, it brought me back to a time where you'd have literal GOTY contenders dropping nonstop. What a time to be alive that was
I really like that you can actually die from your own dumb movement and fall off a boat or get electrocuted if you are not cautious enough from the environment. It actually reminds me of Raw Danger when you can die in a dumb way if not be careful.
"It's the game you rent from blockbuster for a weekend " ..my copy I got from a flea market was a blockbuster copy. Was bundled with a blockbuster copy of Manhunt and obscure 2 Was a weird weekend.
I only rented Cold Fear because I was still waiting for the PS2 Resident Evil 4 port. Ended up liking it on its merits. I wish Ubisoft gave a sequel. Even though they would’ve ran the cold Fear series into the ground if it did get sequels.
Now that's a blast from the past. Solid AA game, this one, from the time when big studios still made AA games. It could've been a franchise, I can totally see it. The sequel would've been so much better.
Have you seen the trailer for .45 Parabellum Bloodhound? It looks like a developer has finally taken on the challenge of making a game that wears its Parasite Eve inspiration on its sleeve and hopefully it will be a fun take on that extremely unique blend of gameplay styles.
In the spanish translation, the voice for Tom Hansen was dubbed by the same guy who voiced Sam Fisher, so you have another Splinter Cell conection right there haha
One of the most underappreciated survival horror games ever made by Ubisoft. I remembered playing this on the PC, and it's indeed a fun game. It'll be nice if they remaster Cold Fear.
Excellent video as always, man. Love that you talk about these games, so they don't get forgotten. Not to dictate how you make content, but would you consider making a video on those "Unique game features you'd like to see indie devs explore" you spoke about in the video? 11:47 for reference
7:25 for me how I judge gun gameplay: -Feedback from the recoil, just a simple camera shake adds a bit of weight -Sound, everything about it, gun fire sounds punchy, reloads, just the movement of the parts. A bit of echo is close spaces is a nice touch -Impact, how the space around you reacts to a shot. Bullet impacts, sfx, enemy reactions to getting hit.
I remember having the game on the original Xbox and being fascinated by its manual, particularly how the zombie designs look lifted from L4D despite being older. Ah, to be a baby again
I remember well how good late 2004 early 2005 was for games. Literally classic after classic was released. How does anyone say 2023 was the best years in gaming? It was pure shit compared to this
7:35 What's going on there? Were those two guys on the right not supposed to be in the shot as it were? The game was originally made for a smaller screen size? I don't recall anything like that when I played it on the Xbox years ago. Or just a typical old game being played on a newer PC type of thing? It's bothers me way too much how you don't seem to fully reload a lot of the time, lol. I'm such a compulsive reloader in games. Or was this one of those "Don't use all ammo in a clip? Well you lose it in a reload" type of games? Been way too long since I last played it.
Call me crazy but i love QTEs i grew up on shenmue so i thimk they add some really cool moments. As long as they dont replace boss fights i dont see a problem, as long as they're done right they're brilliant.
18:51 Honestly, Flood vs Covenant and Flood vs Covenant vs Sentinels with Chief being a fourth party were kind of under underutilized imo, would have been nice to have more battles like that. Meanwhile Halo 2 gave us one of the greatest moments in gaming at the end of Gravemind... You know what I'm talking about, in Mausoleum of the arbiter?
*Budding indie game dev Idea* - Boulder lad, I wanna ask you something. The strange and quirky mechanics you mention in your videos are indeed really cool most of the time. Do you think it worth your time to like gather maybe 30ish cool budding dev ideas and slap 'em all together into a single video? Like "30 cool indie game mechanic ideas, for budding indie devs?" as hopefully an eventual game dev, I would L O V E to have a small reference catalogue of bizarreness. Jesus that's a lot of budding, a mitochondria level of budding.
I’m mad this game is so expensive trying to find good old school survival horror games that are cheap for ps2/xbox/gc gen Is hard thank god for emulation
Do you and other survival game reviewers collaborate on games to review? I just saw another channel release a review of this game yesterday. It also happened with Haunting Ground and a few resident evil games.
starting calling the captain a corpsicle you get that response back... what did you expect...? it fell through the cracks because it barely debuted... while resident evil has been known since 90s and known by fans.. RE4 took over most of the horror frame besides Silent Hill...
NGL but PC gaming Wiki feels useless most of the time. If your like me and you play a lot of Japanese games, most of the PC Gaming Wiki articles are just blank stubs that copy and pasted the Steam store's recommended specs and nothing else.

Wow mid-2000s has a lot of hidden gem. Especially PS2
Mhm.
Ps2 era was the golden age of gaming. Lot of gems that were published since gaming back then was more adventurous with their projects and not obsessed with "How can we milk the playerbase with a unfinished game?"
I miss the times I could go to a video game store and just stumble on a great AA game. Nowadays there is very little surprises in gaming
Those were the days, my man
There's a good reason why the PS2 is "still" the best selling console. Variety.
I've seen many games where I can play as a member of the US military, be it the army, the marines, the air force, and the navy. As far as I know, this is the one and only game where you play as a coast guard member, and it's in a horror setting
Honorable mention but Still wakes the deep also puts you as an oil rig engineer albeit without the shooting element
You know what else was cool about this game? The sick flash website. Anyone remember when games had awesome flash websites? Killzone, res evil 4, cold fear... i miss the internet back then.
Cloverfield had an awesome online website and community back in the day
Better times.
Yeah when the internet was still relatively new and fun
