And people would still get their windows and luggage stolen from their cars right in front of the security guard! I guess you didn't want to chance sitting at the light at Oakport? 😂 Can't say I blame you. I used to work in that neighborhood where those office building are back when it was still kind of functional. During the day it wasn't too bad back then, but it could get a bit sketchy at night. I remember there used to be a Carrow's there, and when Carrow's went out of business, a Black Bear Diner. Now there's hardly anything left of it. It's pretty sad to see actually.

@@JoyCool1 The only thing that would really make you a big target around there is the camera. Not just because it is a valuable piece of equipment, but also because the locals really don't want to be filmed. Not all the criminal elements that feel that way either, but there is also a personal safety concern some of the regulars would have. Most of the people that live around places like that are decent folks, and they are the ones being terrorized the most by the criminal element. The big thing to always remember is to never act like you don't belong there, and always be aware of your surroundings. Most of the time you will be alright. That's good advice anywhere you go. I did work a few night shifts in that neighborhood, and I can tell you couple of short stories. One, I was covering for the graveyard person who had a family emergency, and it was a Saturday night, I believe. About 2:30'ish in the morning, and I remember I was outside having a cigarette, and hearing machine gun fire coming from the neighborhood between Hegenberger and 98th Ave. This was maybe 10 years ago. The second story, I heard a loud crash on Hegenberger one night just right before my shift ended -- I worked Swing Shift then. When I drove up Hegenbeger heading towards the Nimitz, I saw what the noise was. A van was tipped on it's side, on the side of the road going towards the airport, it had gone through the BofA sign in front of that office building, and there were at least a dozen Oaklan PD cruisers, lights flashing and all. Looked like a high speed chase had ended. And to think, those were the better days there. 😂

@@JoyCool1 I haven't worked for that company for 8 years, and they did move to Alameda my last year there. Unfortunately, I am not far enough away from Oakland right now. So I still see the dysfunction on a fairly regular basis. It's sad because it can be a really great place, and there are so many good decent people living there. The city itself has so much going for it. Unfortunately it has a government and "leadership" that have proved that corruption and bad ideas are far more destructive than any natural disaster ever could be.

Can't say I blame you. I used to work in that neighborhood where those office building are back when it was still kind of functional. During the day it wasn't too bad back then, but it could get a bit sketchy at night.
I remember there used to be a Carrow's there, and when Carrow's went out of business, a Black Bear Diner. Now there's hardly anything left of it. It's pretty sad to see actually.

It is kind of dangerous for a white boy like me to be going around those neighborhoods. We have a six cents for a reason so we should listen to it. @@JoyCool1 The only thing that would really make you a big target around there is the camera. Not just because it is a valuable piece of equipment, but also because the locals really don't want to be filmed. Not all the criminal elements that feel that way either, but there is also a personal safety concern some of the regulars would have.
Most of the people that live around places like that are decent folks, and they are the ones being terrorized the most by the criminal element.
The big thing to always remember is to never act like you don't belong there, and always be aware of your surroundings. Most of the time you will be alright. That's good advice anywhere you go.
I did work a few night shifts in that neighborhood, and I can tell you couple of short stories.
One, I was covering for the graveyard person who had a family emergency, and it was a Saturday night, I believe. About 2:30'ish in the morning, and I remember I was outside having a cigarette, and hearing machine gun fire coming from the neighborhood between Hegenberger and 98th Ave. This was maybe 10 years ago.
The second story, I heard a loud crash on Hegenberger one night just right before my shift ended -- I worked Swing Shift then. When I drove up Hegenbeger heading towards the Nimitz, I saw what the noise was.
A van was tipped on it's side, on the side of the road going towards the airport, it had gone through the BofA sign in front of that office building, and there were at least a dozen Oaklan PD cruisers, lights flashing and all. Looked like a high speed chase had ended.
And to think, those were the better days there. 😂

@@JoyCool1 I haven't worked for that company for 8 years, and they did move to Alameda my last year there.
Unfortunately, I am not far enough away from Oakland right now. So I still see the dysfunction on a fairly regular basis.
It's sad because it can be a really great place, and there are so many good decent people living there. The city itself has so much going for it. Unfortunately it has a government and "leadership" that have proved that corruption and bad ideas are far more destructive than any natural disaster ever could be.
