Eric Stewart wrote I'm Not in Love in response to his wife telling him that he didn't say "I love you" often enough.
When they were recording this song, Kevin Godley thought it needed something extra to put it over the top. He came up with the line, "Big boys don't cry," which the band members liked, but they needed to find the right voice to speak it. Just then, secretary Kathy Redfern opened the door to the control room and whispered, "Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you." Lol Creme said, "That's it! That's the voice!" Redfern was reluctant to do it, but they talked her into it. The line later became the inspiration for the band name Boys Don't Cry.
10cc's biggest hit was "The Things We Do for Love", which is a more conventional song than I'm Not in Love.
After Godley and Creme left 10cc, they formed their own group and recorded "Cry."

Eric Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife, to whom he had been married for eight years at that point, asked him why he did not say "I love you" more often to her. Stewart said, "I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her, 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah", it's not gonna mean anything eventually'. That statement led me to try to figure out another way of saying it, and the result was that I chose to say 'I'm not in love with you', while subtly giving all the reasons throughout the song why I could never let go of this relationship."

It is surprising how so many people miss the denial and pain in his voice. He has fallen HARD in love and is terrified; he has no idea how to handle it. Because I lived that same experience when the song first came out, I am quite sure he's in the early stage of a relationship, not the end. I am still married to the girl I was "not in love" with.

    Big boys dont cry.
That was recorded when the secretary spoke to her son on the phone telling him to go to sleep and that " Big boys dont cry".
This is perhaps the most important part of the video.
    'You cannot imagine it without.

Welcome to Stockport (a small town near Manchester England). It was released in 1976 and caused a sensation with local and National DJ’s because of the originality and sound of 10cc. On RUclips, there is a whole video on the making of this record, featuring interviews with the entire band, including Eric Stewart the writer, singer and lead guitarist of the group. Hope this tells you more. Good luck! Vic Whitchurch, England

It's interesting how a song takes you back to a place in your past. For me, this song takes me back to 1975, when the song was released, and I'm in the dayroom of an Army barracks at Fort Benning, Georgia that's not air conditioned in August in the evening smearing Ben-Gay on my knees so I can make it through Airborne (paratrooper) training the next day. This song was played multiple times every evening (I have no idea what happened at night as we had to be up at 4 am), but, Praise God I was able to get through the training and earned my jump wings. So many years ago.

Hi, always enjoy your thoughtful reactions. It always amazes me when songs and bands that I followed in the 70's are heard for the first time by a young audience today, it's very entertaining to watch. Along with Genesis, Yes and The Moody Blues, 10CC were my favourite band in the 70's, and wrote very melodic and witty lyrics. You'd love " Don't hang up " which is a fairly long piece, with lots of tempo changes. You mentioned the lead singer,....here's a fun fact. Phil Collins did a cover of "Groovy kind of love " which you may have heard. Eric Stewart ( of 10CC) was the singer on the original ,by The Mindbenders , a UK band from the 60's. and was a big hit.

  • @aleclewis9123

You mentioned that Eric Stewart's singing style reminded you a little of Paul McCartney. Funnily enough both did collaborate together on McCartney's albums Tug Of War, Pipes Of Peace, Give My Regards To Broad Street and Press To Play, the last of which has the song Angry, featuring Pete Townshend on guitar and Phil Collins on the drums. 🙂

10cc "Good Morning Judge" Is a great example of when British bands emulate American Southern Rock (which given your accent, I'm sure you'll appreciate). They really nail the blues/boogie rock style, and the honky tonk guitar solos are dead-on groovy!

My take on lyrics is that the two are realizing that they are in love but the guy is doesn't know how to accept the fact. He's young enough that many of his friends are still afraid of girls so he doesn't want to draw attention to the relationship. The soft part where she talks about big boys don't cry isn't them breaking up, it is his reaction some key event in their relationship and realizing that he is in over his head in love. The people that understand the song the best are early teens.

This came out when I was in my early teens, and it freaked me out at the time. I was too young to understand what was going on, and it really just made my skin crawl. It has the sound it does because they recorded oohs and ahhs and then tape-looped them to create a very unusual texture.
Here's one you'd probably really appreciate. Joan as Police Woman. She was Jeff Buckley's girlfriend and she's a pretty amazing artist in her own right. This is a completely chill inducing song, and one of those that just has it's own unique atmosphere, as this one does:
