- “Around 2006, I drove down to the Half Moon Bay. The car was standing for years in a barn on a pumpkin farm,” begins Klaus Kutscher, Restoration Expert at BMW Classic. “It was really rough. A lot of parts were missing…” he says. Even finding a BMW 507 is an achievement, but true ‘barn find’ cars often require a Herculean amount of work to get right. This particular car had a saving grace, however: “We searched the VIN number and realized that the car belonged to Elvis.”
That’s right: when Elvis Presley was based in Germany for the U.S. military, he drove this very car as his daily driver, even buying a second to give to friend Ursula Andress. As you could imagine, Elvis driving around Germany in a white BMW 507-of which there were roughly 250 examples made-wasn’t difficult to spot. “He loved the 507,” Kutscher says.
“The car was normally white, and all his fans made kisses with lipsticks on the car, so he was mad and he painted the car red after that,” with Kutscher confirming the legend. It’s stories like those that helped to keep the restoration moving, even as the true measure of the task began to present itself.
“The dashboard was cut and they had other instruments also in the car. They cut the frame. The car was painted twice, then black, and then after that again in red. Then the car [had] …a big accident.”
Responsible for restoration at BMW Classic, the car presented both an opportunity to preserve history, as well as showcase the talents of his team in front of some serious crowds. After recently making its full public debut during Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance as the centerpiece of BMW’s 100-Year anniversary celebrations, the car will undoubtedly be active and present at classic car events for years to come.
“We always want to keep the car in this condition. That means in perfect condition. Now you can see the result looks, for me, beautiful, more than beautiful.”

The 507, for me, is the most beautiful BMW ever made. Absolutely gorgeous!
Maybe the most beautiful car ever made. Stunning.
That and 328 for me
True, hard to believe it’s a BMW when you consider all the crap coming from their factory today 🤦♂️🤔
Yes, crap that has doubled their volume this century, record 2023, & made Spartanburg largest Amerikuhn exporter of vehicles 8 years running on 60 years of growth. Success sucks, like independence, viability, innovation, leadership.
Petrolicious is the kind of channels that make you fall for classic even more.
Mnov Straits totally agree
Mnov Straits and make you jealous of everything, because of this channel I've gotten a strong love for so many cars I overlooked.
Yes. The backstorys are really interesting
More like the kind of channel CRINGEWORTHY enough to drive one to commit suicide!!!!
This car sounds fantastic!
"More than beautiful" - Thanks, Klaus
One of the top 10 cars of all time for its beautiful body.
really nice indeed
ZenDude65 It looks like an older BMW motorcycle rides.
don't exaggerate! there are tens of cars better than this BMW
Gival I would love examples just to understand where your head is at.
lamborghini miura, 400 gt and countach; ferrari superamerica, dino, daytona, 250 gto, 512, f40, 365 california, 308 gtb, testarossa; jaguar e-type, xj13; aston martin db4 zagato and db5; chevrolet stingray; mercedes benz 300sl gullwing; porsche 911 classics; alfa romeo montreal, giulia sprint, giulietta, spider, 33 stradale; lancia stratos; saab 900; ford gt; maserati a6gcs.
just to mention pre-90's cars
Stunning car, probably the most beautiful BMW ... and a colossal failure, almost bankrupted the company in 1958. It was meant to be a volume seller but was too expensive and only 252 were built. The company had to make a choice, either be liquidated for a find a solution quickly, so they went from the sublime 507 to making a bubble car with a motorcycle engine. The little unsung BMW Isetta saved the company and is almost forgotten while we gaze upon a piece of art that almost finished them.
dcanmore excellent info
dcanmore That is not quite correct, the 507 Series was not reason for the bankruptcy of BMW alone. Simplified Said all the 501, 502 and 503, 507 Cars where losing Money for the company. The Warner were the Motorbike. In the early Post war time Germany was a country of Motorbike Driver s. Until '55, the number of registered new Motorbike s was higher than Cars. And BMW Bikes were longliving and used from Police etc.
Money came from the Motorbikes, BMW tried after advice of Max Hoffman to enter the Market of Personal luxury Cars. But the price was Close to US Dollar 7000, a Cadillac 62 series cost 6000 and Merc Gullwing cost about 6.300. So that price was Way higher than appreciation of the Customers. So Most of the Cars were Sold on fourth below the official price, the 507 could not contibute to the benefit of the company this Way.
dcanmore 😃🤣😃😁😩 i love those stories. i heard that d4
While Andreas Schmidt is correct in that the "500 Series" of the 1950s nearly put the company under, I think much of the cause was that the BMW management/marketing people wanted to bring back the quality cars from before the war. In the country's economy of the '50s, it just wasn't yet ready for cars in that price range.
What finally brought the company back to solvency was introduction of the BMW 1500 in September of 1961, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Out of that grew the 1600 & the 1800 4-door sedans. They were very well received and "saved the day" for BMW. My first car was a 1967 1600-2 2-door that introduced that series and then about a year later, a 1969 2002.
One of the entertaining bits of that time was that nearly no one in the US knew what a BMW was. I outran several cars over the next few years and almost all of them thought they were some version of a Toyota that they hadn't seen yet. That was long before the "posers" decided that BMWs were cool enough to focus on.
This would be my #1 choice to own. I was born in June of 1959
Probably the prettiest BMW I've ever seen.
A true work of art restoration, with rock and roll heritage!!!!!!! Magnificent!!!!
I didn't know until today this car existed Simply gorgeous timeless sexiness!
One of the most beautiful cars of all time. I got to see one on display at the BMW factory in South Carolina, but it's wonderful to see one running like this.
A true pearl. What an outstanding job this man did.
this might just be the most satisfying engine sound I've ever heard.
Finally, a video about a BMW that isn't a 2002.
One of the most beautiful roadsters ever designed.
Such a gorgeous car! I've had the lucky chance to see one in person, even more magnificent in person.
I applaud the time and dedication he and his team put in to restore this car to it's original condition. It truly reflects his passion.
May I just say these three things. Petrolicious, stunning work, wonderful story, and shots! Mr Kutscher, outstanding work on restoring this car! And lastly, why is the 507 so underrated car is beyond me...
Highly recommended !!!
The video, the car itself !!
The 507 ist one of the most beautiful cars ever !!!
Thanks !!
If that's not the most beautiful, sleek, elegant roadster of all time, then what is?...
300sl roadster. Though this car is pretty nice too.
For me it's hard to choose between the BMW 507, Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadster, Lancia Aurelia B24 spider and Alfa Romeo Giulietta spider
It's in the top five for sure.
Good choices - only somebody would have to give me one. I couldn't afford any of those beauties.
spreagadh Alfa 8C Competitzione spider no contest
Klaus, it'as at perfect in my eyes as it is yours. Well done.
It's simply stunning.
BMW SHOULD DESIGN BEAUTIFUL CARS LIKE THE 507 AGAIN.
How pretty!! German interiors in the 50s and 60s were so light and airy, before the shark grey cloth of the 80s onwards.
Furthermore to what a magnificent Car this is in all respects, @0:24 - the sound this door shuts.... Better than most modern roadsters.
Outstanding work Klaus and team BMW Classic!!!
Saw this car a few weeks ago on display at the BMW Zentrum in South Carolina. Absolutely beautiful, one of my favorite automobiles.
Favourite car of all times ...
For some reason I didn't expect it to sound so good. What an automobile...
Got to grab a glass of wine when I see a new video. They just pit me in that mood invigorates my passion for cars and bikes. Best content on RUclips so far. New Sub
If i could get any car i wanted, it is this one. It’s just so perfect for me and for alot of people too.
I know it's a cliché, but it ;looks like it's moving when it's standing still. Superb.
WOW what an amazing find! Worth every penny spent on restoration creating a priceless beauty. LOVE the sound of that aluminum V-8.
Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and this car are the two absolute GOATs of German cars. Absolutely beautiful. Interestingly, the Merc SL/SLR/SLS etc is have had V8 engines, and BMW is the one keeping the straight six heritage...
507 has v8 engine. Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenahut coupe outshines the 300sl.
That is a work of art. Thanks for sharing.
Would loved to have seen a video of the refurb process. If I had unlimited cash I'd be living in the south of France and driving a 507. Beautiful motor.
How can someone possibly dislike. It's out of my mind.
Breathtaking.
Thank you Thank you Very Much....(Elvis has left the Building)
One of the most beautiful cars ever made.
really beautiful car
Great car, fabulous restoration. Breathtaking!
As usual the music fits perfectly...
That thing is just painfully beautiful!
I felt like I was watching the restoration of something almost sacred in this video. It sent chills up my spine. Thanks.
In a world of "the newer the better", I´m glad great car-manufacturers respect their past. BMW Sheer driving pleasure. Petrolicious 10/10 again.
What a outstanding restorationjob !!
This was nice to see. That man has total love for his car. He just beams.
I don't blame him. It's a beauty. Where does he live? I'm gonna steal it!
beautiful. Reminds me of the Porsche 550 .
Klaus, thanks to you and all the craft workers at BMW. It was worth the effort.
This ranks among the top 10 most beautiful cars of all time...
Love the 507
there is a video of the full restoration
great car, thanks for sharing.
The Kings 507! 🤴
Ive seen this car when they rebuilt it in Munich when it was televised And they were saying that the car once belonged to Elvis Presley wow its amazing that he is the owner what a lucky man
just sensational
What a beautiful car with a beautiful sound...
Great job what the guys at BMW Munich do. I love it!
I saw this gorgeous, marvelous car recently here in my hometown Munich at the BMW Museum, and I can tell you: IT´S GREAT !!!!! - Oh my God, I nearly fell down to my knees in awe for THE KING !!!! - People, please don't miss out enjoying this historical masterpiece, too, when you happen to travel to Munich !!! 💕❣♥💋👄
Maravilhoso esse BMW é a memória via do Rei do Rock ( Elvis Presley )
I saw one last week , Graphite colour and i was stunned , truly beautiful piece of machinery
Very cool movie. Congrats for the guys that found this amazing story.
One of the best cars of the 1950s in my opinion.
it's about time you guys made a new feature
Someday id love to have this and the z8 in my garage..
Nicely done, Klaus.
...Stunning...
SPECTACULAR!
Saw the hour long restoration of this car which I found to be more of a reproduction, really impressive. Tnx guys.
Quality video.............stunning restoration...............a truly beautiful car.
The legend of the king lives forevermore.
Thank you +petrolicious for bringing such an artistry to the essence of these beautiful cars. Quite breathtaking.
Stunning car.
Short and to the point! I actually got to see a 507 in person 2 years ago at a Cars and Coffee here in Chicago, so that's been removed from the bucket list!!
What an outstanding restoration! Gorgeous car.
klaus is right to be proud excellent work. i don't often care for bmw design but this is a great looking car
For a guy like Elvis who was die hard Cadillac fan and as true as red white and blue you could get only a car like a BMW 507 could make him fall in love with German car
In my eyes this is the most beautiful car ever built in germany post WW II. Not even the MB gullwing reaches the class of this beauty.
Idk I’d say they’re both neck and neck
3 seconds to view the engine bay, thanks!
imagine if the roadkill guy got to that shit first
there'd be a supercharger on that fucker right now
With a V8 from a Caravan. :P
Probably they'd do an LS-swap. I hope a 507 never comes in the hands of roadkill...
I love RoadKill but they've done some terrible things for no good reason on there.
Yeah. I hate those douchebags. At the times they fuck up classic cars with their shitty v8 and charger contraptions that wont even work and scrap the whole thing. Restore that damn thing with tasteful upgrades or don't touch it.
(sorry guys this was a joke i love em)
Now thats a good car story ....
These videos are top notch. Just the sound. The music and talking is sometimes soft in compared to the engine sounds there after and then everyone at home complains that I watch car videos instead of learning because I turn up the volume to hear what they saying and then next thing the beautiful sound of the 507 blasts through the house.
Best looking and sounding BMW in history. I daresay, at least to my eyes, second only to the Mercedes Gullwing as the most beautiful German car of all time. I wish they'd been more successful, so there would be more of them out there and a normal person might have a chance to own one.
Beautiful
You guys really need to do a Lada Niva 4x4 episode... you'd be surprised!
beautiful Car @@♡♥♥♥♥♡♡♡♡
Bravo to BMW classic for the reborn of this wonderful design ,one of the best BMW ,and bravo to pretrolicious for as usual ,i will said share great story ,and very nice quality video
what a beauty
As always a great video. I am getting exposed to so many classics that I was unaware of. Thanks
outstanding is the word ! Such a beautiful car
"Two Zousand and Zix"
classic
Freaking awesome car! Awesome video
The sound of that V8 made my heart rate speed up! Lol
Previously owned by Elvis? What a story!
Built by BMW, presented at the 507's world premier, sold to one of the best racing-drivers of all time, returned to the dealership after a while, sold to Elvis, painted lipstick-red, exported to the USA (by Elvis), sold somewhen, repainted in a different red, equipped with a Chevy V8 and 3-speed automatic, ended up in California, owner started a restauration, taken over by BMW, owner (sadly) passed away, BMW kept it for the museum.
Quite a car-life.
According to Elvis... “falling in love with you”!!!🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
I could personally use a little more contrast on the video (it looks like everything is overexposed), but the 507 is so beautiful, even the white can't hide its shape.
The car isn't actually "pure white".
It's a very (very very very very) light cream-colour.
Max S. Kinda like the old Ford "Wimbledon White", huh? Neat. It certainly appeared plain white when I saw it at Legends of the Autobahn this year.
computiNATEor It's called "Papyrus White" (I probably spelled that wrong).
Generally one could say it's "99% white".
It's BMW's "factory colour" for the car, which is fitting with this one since it was used at the world premier.
I'm not much into BMWs but this is a very pretty looking and good sounding car.
El mejor BMW en la historia
I cried a little.
Good movie ! And owner :) Beautiful car....
There must have been a secret under the bonnet that we were not supposed to see.
Bruce Boschek What he didn't mention is that Elvis' body is under the bonnet.
I knew there was some reason he closed it so quickly!
+Bruce Boschek Would you agree with me that modern cars are horrendous?
Agreed. Would have loved to see that engine.
Bruce Boschek
this beautiful sound
Fabulous! I was the 507th "like".
