I like Clarence as much as the next guy and it's about time it get its own big feature. Video essays, retrospectives and explorations focused on the history of shows are pretty crucial right now considering Cartoon Network's current state. Even for a series as unassuming as this one, its evolution over time can be deceptively rich. I had the chance to interview a couple folks that were crucial to production. With their insight, along with pre-existing material, I was able to put this beast together.

I'm so heartened by the reappraisal of Clarence, it's such a warmhearted show. Clarence was one of increasingly few cartoons to get big season orders for several years, and air reliably enough to grow an audience on cable. The Fungies is a perfect example of a sweet, oddball show that didn't get a chance to grow up the way Clarence did.

Clarence earned a spot alongside Gumball, Transformers Animated, Teen Titans, and Steven Universe as one of my all-time favorite Cartoon Network shows. I remember spending hours of my summer vacation laughing at this wonderful showcase of naturalistic nonsensical absurdity.

I always loved Clarence ever since it came out. It was something I sat down and watched with my step siblings everyday when I got home. I have great memories with it

GREAT retrospective, just all around.
I Remember when it came out, but I was so young that I saw gross out and Got scared. Now that I’m older I absolutely adore Clarence… but because I have a different view of it than I did when I was younger.
I see Clarence as the story of 3 Neurodivergent kids growing in a town that accepts them for who they are. To me it makes perfect sense, Growing up with inattentive ADHD gave that perspective :)
I never, ever got the hate behind this show. It was a favorite of mine ever since I saw the pilot on RUclips, before it even became a show. I’m glad it’s gets getting the recognition it deserves. It’s just a comfy low key show about kids being kids.

You tackled this show in such thought-provoking ways, and you really took me back to growing up during this time. From seeing the pilot episode to watching the finale, it wasn’t until now that I realized the impact this show had on me. And I have your masterfully written video to thank for that.

Been rewatching clarence over the last week or so and it brought me back here. This does such a good job explaining how well this show curated its own offbeat style. It feels like most people just immediately flinch when they see something thats differently different, if that makes sense lol. And now I have to actually give the fungies a chance.
i , personally . remember the hate for shows like clarence and uncle grandpa being mostly regurgitated by adults who thought that kids wouldnt like the show because its way too gross-out. but as a squeamish kid who loved it i really didn’t understand.
I can say clearance was a grate show for me.most of the time when I wach clearance I see my self. I use to be like him she I was a kid. Its very hard that the show ended in 2018. In 3 seasons.but still I wach clearance when I feel sad or unhappy. i miss clearance.
The episode, Tales of Mardrynia, made me genuinely uncomfortable the first time I saw it. It gave me this uneasy vibe that I can't fully describe. It wasn't fear, it wasn't paranoia, it wasn't disgust, it was something completely different. It was the only episode that I purposely never watched again.
I would love to know if I'm the only one who felt this way about it.

I remember one of the things I hated about this show as the kid was it had one of the worst "Meg Griffin" type characters where his body would receive permanent damage in every episode he was in. Being hated by everyone is one thing, but having that in addition to permanent bodily mutilation is another.
Other than that, I guess it's a fine cartoon about kids with subtle neruodivergent characteristics.

Bout to say some shit sucks about what he did. But he got kicked off the show so i really didnt care. I held no grudge to the show or anything. Its easily top 3 cartoons for me right with Flapjack
Adventure time sucked so much big ass, it was so astronomically bad, IT'S ALL POOP AND FART JOKES, It's story and plot sucks, I couldn't make it through the first season. NOT FUNNY AT ALL
I probably can't change your mind if you are dead set on this but I encourage you to give adventure time a other chance, I will admit the first season is a little rough but that's becuase it was still finding its groundings then. I would recommend watching season 2 (or season 3 if you want to rush some things) onwards. It is a fantastic show from my personal experience, and I would hate for you to miss out on that because of a rough first season. It's has great lore and interesting storytelling if you like that stuff, but it also has fun to watch one-off episodes if that is more your speed. As I said, I would highly recommend giving it another go. It is a good show if you give it a chance.
I personaly hated this show, but i can see why people liked it..
While i liked the general artstyle (or at least not dissliked), i absolutely couldn't stand Clarence's character. HI dislike childish characters, and Clarence was way worse than most i do remember. Additionaly i didn't like his voice and manner of speaking, i also disliked him being fat (kill for it, but it just not nice to look at) and having two teeth.
That said, when Clarence was airing, as was alerady a teen, and i was used before to few shows with more juvenile characters, so maybe i would like Clarence more if i was itroduced to it earlier.
Clarence is very much just a kid doing kid stuff. Truth be told, he isn't all that more childish than other characters from other better regarded shows.
Clarence is also more unhinged and untrustworthy than a normal kid. I also agree with what you said
Idk I guess I’m in the minority, I never liked it and recently giving it another chance I’m still not sold. I can’t say if it’s trash or good but I just can’t like it
