मेक्समूलर ने ऐसा कौन सा महान कार्य कर दिया संस्कृत और वेदों का अध्ययन कर की आप उसका प्रशस्ति गान कर रहें हैं कि जैसे यह व्यक्ति वेदों पर सायण भाष्य का अनुवाद नहीं करता तो भारतीय वैदिक जीवन पद्धति या यूँ कहें कि वेद भगवान का ही लोप हो जाता। इतना प्रशस्ति गान अगर आप भारतीय वैदिक ऋषियों का करते तो महान पुण्य होता,जिन्होंने सृष्टि के प्राचीनतम ज्ञान परम्परा को मानव समुदाय के लिए उपदेश किये और मानव कल्याण की एक महान परम्परा को आगे बढ़ाया। नीरद चौधरी की अंग्रेजी आपको बहुत अच्छी लगी इसीलिये उसने मेशमुल्लार पर जो लिखा वह सब उसी रूप में सत्य है,ये आपके विचार हो सकते हैं,क्योंकि आप और आपकी बुद्धि चौधरी की अङ्ग्रेजी से अत्यंत सम्मोहित है। क्या बेढंगा तर्क है। वैसे मुल्लर संस्कृत का प्रकांड पंडित हो और सायण भाष्य का अनुवाद भी किया हो वह सब ठीक है।पर उसकी नीयत ठीक नही थी। उसने यह सब संस्कृत के प्रति अनूठे लगाव के कारण ऐसा नही है। उसने बार बार अपना रूप बदलकर वेदों,सनातन धर्म,भारतीय संस्कृति को नीचा दिखाने का ही प्रयास किया। उसने प्राच्यविद्या का प्रखर विद्वान के छद्मवेश को धारण कर हिंदुओं को ईसाई बनाने का कार्य किया,और यह सब उसने अपने सुंदर उद्गार अपनी पत्नी को लिखे पत्रों में स्वीकार किया है।जिन पत्रों को उसकी पत्नी ने उसके मृत्यु के पश्चात छपवाया।और यह सब सार्वजिक पटल पर उप्लन्ध है। इसीलिए maxmuller भारत के लिए क्या था यह सर्वविदित है।कोई आकर उसके करनी को पेंट करके भारत सनातन वैदिक धर्म का महान ध्वजवाहक बताये यह तो चिंताजनक है,और अकल्पनीय है।विशेषकर तब जब कोई सनातन अनुगामी ऐसी बात करे।

हमारी बिडमंबना है कि हम पहले इंग्लिश में पढ़ते हैं फिर हिंदी या भारतीय भाषाओं में पढ़ते हैं। तब जबकि संस्कृत का किसी भी यूरोपियन भाषाओं में बिना भीषण त्रुटि के अनुवाद हो ही नहीं सकता! और फिर अनुवाद से अनुवाद जो निकलेगा उसका हश्र क्या होगा कोई भी समझ सकता है। विल्सन जोन्स, मॉर्नियर, मैक्स मूलर... सभी का कार्य इतना था की उन्होंने वेद उपनिषद को यूरोपियन को अवगत कराया तो क्या उसके पहले हमारे शास्त्र थे ही नहीं? क्या यूरोपियन को अवगत कराने पर ही हमारे शास्त्रों की प्रामाणिकता सिद्ध होती है? ये तो ऐसे ही कहना है कि वास्को डी गामा के पहले भारत था ही नहीं! साथ ही ध्यान रहे कि इन सभी साधकों की मानसिकता ईसाइयत थी, इनसे भाषा त्रुटि के अलावा भीषण भाव भेद की आशा करना सही है।

That Max Müller was a scholar is beyond doubt. What pro-Hindu Indologists (i.e. the scholars, not gaali-baaz crowd) object to is perhaps the following : 1. Max Müller was a devout Christian after all. And, as such his worldview was constrained by the basic tenets of Christianity : a) The Christian God is the all-powerful, omnipotent “Only True God”; and all pagan deities (including Hindu deities (whose praise the Vedas mostly sing)) are false (or smaller) gods. b) Jesus is the only medium of salvation c) the holy texts of Christianity tell the absolute “gospel” truth about the world, its creation etc. 2) Now, since the aforementioned macro constraints are directing (consciously or subconsciously) Max Müller’s scholarly endeavours, he ends up solidifying the timeline of the Vedas to 1500 BC, and almost settling the “Aryan Invasion Theory” vs. the “Out of India Theory” in the favour of the former. Again, any serious scholar would deduce that Max Müller was not working under an agenda here. He was just trying to (perhaps subconsciously) fit the Vedic timeline into the Christian worldview that the world was created 4000 years ago. For, if the Vedas were to be older than that, then it would violate - severely so - his macro constraints, derived from his conscious or subconscious Christian worldview. 3) So, the long and short of it is, Max Müller ends up fixing the timeline pf the Vedas to 1500 BC. He himself is not doing this under an agenda. BUT… the British seize the opportunity. Leveraging Max Müller’s growing popularity as a Sanskrit scholar - virtually firing a gun from his shoulder rather - the British use their political might to set the Aryan Invasion Theory (AIT) as the mainstream narrative. The Out of India (OIT) theory is tossed out the window (mind you, with latest research as of now, the original theory - i. e. OIT - seems more probable). In a nutshell, the British exploit Max Müller’s research to suppress the Indian Independence Movement, saying that “You Aryans yourselves are colonisers. We have done nothing new. If India has to become free, first, you should leave India.” Thus. despite the recorded reservations of Max Müller’s own students against the AIT, because of the British connivance, the AIT becomes the popular narrative. And, the British became successful in sowing the seed of “Invader Aryans vs. Native Dravidians/Native Tribals” like a festering wound on India. To conclude, Max Müller’s scholarship is certainly par excellence. But his faulty attribution of 1500 BC to the Vedic timeline and the inevitable establishment of the Aryan Invasion Theory (AIT) as THE accepted narrative a result thereof, is what has cause India much harm, even to this day, when Mallikarjun Kharge claims in public meetings that Dravidians are the original Indians; invader Aryans should not be rulers. Or, when the missionaries use this narrative to coin terms like Ādivāsīs to convert the tribals by telling them that ugly vicious Brahmin Aryans have subjugated them. Or, when AIT is taught as a scientific principle (totally unchallengeable, that is) in school books. One is bound to ask, If Max Müller had not tried to fit the Vedic timeline into his Christian macro-constraint of creationism (4000 years), and had kept an open mind about the AIT, would we still have had the “ Down with ugly vicious Aryan outsiders” narrative? On one thing, this writer definitely agrees : a scholar of the calibre of Max Müller deserves analysis, NOT abuse.
