The legend himself! I grew up reading his Dinotopia books (more like obsessing over the art...) He was a huge reason I first picked up a brush. I always love listening to James' insights on painting. He is a treasure trove of knowledge and experience. Just watch, listen, and be transported to another world.

Lindsay, I am a Crafter, not an artist. That is, I can add flowers to a bird house-and build the birdhouse. I can bead embroider, but I need to trace the pattern. One of the things I’ve admired so much about you is that you love to learn new things. And you have a deep commitment to “rising tides lift all boats!” Thank you for these interviews!

What a GREAT interview... Hearing him talk took me right back to the days of paste-up ads! I used to run a typesetting machine and use rubber cement and waxers for laying out ads back in the 70s/80s. We had a hand-crank camera in a dark room for shooting stats for ads and used markers mainly for marker-rendered layouts (who would want ARTWORK made out of markers at that time?! lol!) BOY, have we come a long way!! Life changed dramatically when our ad agency brought in a "Macintosh Plus" in 1987... ANYWAY, what a journey he's been on, and his resources for sharing so many tips, theories, and stories is fantastic. ...and that he can stay so caught up with the progress of the time is admirable! Watching his videos and reading his books has been such a huge encouragement to me to knock the rust off and try new mediums, as well as finding inspiration for painting nearly anywhere!

@@Tyggzz I just got rid of my pica rulers and my last sheets of rubylith about 2 years ago-more items most likely archaic to younger artists these days! But boy, we had to be creative with what we had, didn’t we? Today it’s almost overwhelming all that is available to us (materials AND information), but such a wide world of opportunities! I have also found that many of James’s books he references are old school classics, and I’ve been slowly collecting what I can find.

@@thefrugalcrafter That’s SO encouraging, especially for someone my age! Thank you as well for a great series of questions-I’ve really enjoyed your interviews overall. James Gurney has done so much for the artistic community. I love the videos of his rambles in the woods with his dog, then capturing the essence of the location in the medium of choice. I credit him for the revival of gouache and water-based media in general. He’s a great teacher, inventor and artist. Excellent interview, Lindsay!

I love talking and listening to such art wisdom. I will definitely check out all your work, etc. James. So much appreciate your dedication and hard work. I started watching Lindsay in 2015 and picked up a paintbrush 6 months later. She’s a wonderful teacher. I have a lot to learn still as I love art; design, color, and all things beautiful. I also love paper crafting, and now gotten to love many crafts. I love to explore and learn and come up with different products, and now I say, ok, that’s all, do what I love and no more, I will make this product and this, etc. but NO MORE!! My first love is watercolor for sure and sometimes I think oh how I wish I had more time to just do that!! All the best to you both! ❤

Ok after a moment of "oh my goodness oh my goodness!" I can finally leave a proper comment. The first art I knew from James Gurney was the Dinotopia books, which I bought for my middle daughter (she's still very much into dinosaurs and works in art).
For me, because I have visual dyslexia, letters move all over the place but for a fraction of a second they stay still, so to read I have to read incredibly fast before everything jumbles, I never get time to slow down and appreciate the story. When I found art that was full of detail and colour I was able to relax and read the story in one picture for a long time, working my way around the art, finding little details and characters that I didn't see initially. It's so wonderful and Dinotopia was the first time I'd seen something like that from a current artist, rather than oil paintings from hundreds of years ago. I can't express how much I love and appreciate his art!

I love your interview style and the ease at how your put your guest. I have watched James for many years and have even tried to make the his travel easel, I was not as successful as I would have liked! I suppose that is the perfectionist in me and my preference for ceramic palettes for mixing! I have since used the enamel trays made of tin and they do not break when dropped! I like how they stick in place when using magnets too! Perhaps I need to try making it again? Well thanks again for an amazing interview and spectacular Podcast Lindsay. Casien paint has a very short shelf life and spoils quickly. Must be stored under limited temperature conditions (refer to manufacturer's guidelines). Spoiled paint is very stinky (literally spoiled milk). But, it is a lovely paint medium to work with, it remains workable like gauche and watercolor after it dries. Theatrical scene painters have used it for ages and some paint shops still use it. It can even be washed off muslin (provided it's prepped correctly and the pigment or dye isn't a highly staining variety). For preserving a piece for hanging, I would recommend investigating varnishes or sealant that are friendly to the paint. I've never sealed it because I never used it for permanent work.
