My father-in-law was a house painter. Among his tools was a Stanley screwdriver much like this one. It had years of paint from his hands that remained on the handle and shaft. I removed all the paint and cleaned it up. I chose to just shellac the wood handle without repainting. Some black paint remained in the grooves. To me, the worn off paint and the worn wood on the handle was a symbol of his labor and to that I preserved it as such.
With the red in the fluting, it was nice. Definitely a nod to Scoutcrafter. But I was really surprised at how much I liked the straight black. That has to be my favorite for this type of screwdriver. Nice job as usual.
Loved this format Magdad, although I'm a purist, and a patina boy with my adjustable wrench collection I can truly appreciate your different finishes, my favourite was the factory fresh black handle. Hope Magdaughter's driving is going well. 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
I liked the natural finish. You did a great job. All by hand no power. A old painter told me to first coat old wood with linseed oil and then proceed once it has dried. It helps the wood and also adhesion. I most enjoy your research of the patents.
I like the first ,leaving some patiena and the last ,polished with the black handle... great examples! I'm in the process of restoring some of my dad's, grandads and great grandads tools .... they were all Dr's and surgeons, so have some really cool stuff ..
That is a wonderful trip for that vintage Stanley… it’s proof that some tools are full of life, not only did you preserve it,but it looks alive and healthy.Aside from the beautiful results,it’s a great and simple exercise… thanks …..James
I like all the outcomes, especially the flat black with the matte clear. That multiple ending was pretty innovative and I'd like to see more of that approach.
"The world meets nobody halfway. When you want something, you gotta take it" - Lincoln Hawk 》So I'd take the over the top version but I wouldnt be sad at all with the final one either, especially with that black handle! Great episode! Enjoyed.. now ya can flip that hat back around and carry on..😊 hopefully you have seen over the top..😁
I really liked this format Magdad! I liked the stained handle with the red the best but the black painted handle was nice as well. It truly is a show piece! 👍🇺🇸🤔 Roger
I vote for #2 with the red on the handle. I don't care for a wooden handle being completely painted. If its wood, I like to see wood. Overall, they were all very nice. Good job showing all the options for those of us that like to restore old tools. Keep em coming Magdad
Great video, what we do is take rusty worn out old tools and make them as good as new or better. They're mostly let go to a terrible end so I say finish them however you want. I like the over the top stuff so the first result was awesome.
Love this video! Both ending are amazing and its difficult to choose... I love factory finishes but that red against the wood grain is beautiful. Well done sir.
The stain/red looked great but I think I lean toward the 3rd ending with the black handle. Your skill and attention to detail make every tool I have seen you do look great. Thanks for sharing the techniques you use in your work.
Really great video!!! Loved seeing all of these different methods. I'm a fan of preserving some wear and tear in items, but definitely agree that kind of conservative restore is better for collectables and items with a lot of unique character -- both the black and the souped-up red version are very nice options for this particular tool. Giving new life to something old is just as good an option as preserving it.
Again… amazing and over the top. I think if your going for a restoration, go for original. You nailed that with the matte finish. To many people go with gloss and that looks off to me. Your attention to detail is perfect, and you go the extra steps needed to put out a project like this. If your not into full restoration then your first clean up is the way to go. I’m not into custom restorations like the second one. Fun video, it gets people thinking and involved. Thanks.
What a cool twist on the format. It’s a blast to see the different treatments, and sparks some great ideas. You always up the ante in your videos. Love the innovation. Keep em coming.
I am a fan of the wood with red paint. I recently found a milllers falls flat screw driver that had a black handle. Unfortunately someone had beat it with a hammer and split two big chunks off the wood handle. I enjoy your channel.
I love #2 but the winner has to be #3. I restored a Stanley #20 with black, but mine was glossy. I really like the matte finish you use. I like wood handles with color so I thought you might go for all red! I like the matte blue you've used on several projects, too. #1 is how most of us would have "restored" a tool before getting into this hobby. Not bad, but not enough.
#2 was pretty sweet, #3 with the oem livery was a cool touch too. I always go with beautiful woodgrain tho so Imma have to go with #2. Well done on all three!
Great job I love doing wood handle screwdrivers. I love the red in the handle the best but the black looked good too. You get the best of both worlds doing a project half wood and half metal.
I really like the wood with red but that black really turned out great! I'm going with the natural wood with the red. I like wood, brass and metal as you know. I have a super long Stanley screwdriver I need to break out.
The second one was clearly the winner. Number three was a close runner up. Number one didn’t even show up to the event. Who died and left “ the purists” in charge anyway? Love the video format and would like to see more like this. Take care 😃👍🏼
Thanks Alex. A couple viewers suggested leaving the acid on longer and applying multiple treatments. I'm going to try that on a project I'm working on now.
Excellent job on all three endings. Personally I like the red fluting best 👍. Excellent tip about shellac on the end grain, thank you. I enjoyed the multiple ending scenario but am just as happy with your usual approach. Cheers Tim
Seeing that red fluting was a real shocker, in the best way. Although being a stickler for tradition, I’m leaning to the black. For all my father’s old tools, which I use regularly, I always do the “conservation restoration”.
Agree that the one with the minimal restoration is the one you would most likely use on a daily basis. The other two are almost too nice to use, but I have to say that the black handle was my favorite. It looks like new but restored back to the original Stanley paint scheme. Also, great tip regarding sealing the end grain of the wood before staining.
Without a doubt #1 is my choice...it still has the spirits of feeling in the wood that's why when you pick up one you think of those who used it before you...when you make it look new the feeling is GONE...when you use the older tools that still have spirit in them you seem to not be working alone 😇...
i would have to say # 3 all black handle as for all the wooden handle screw drivers the Stanley #25 is one of the best designs hey great job 357 magdad always looking forward to your next video cheers from Rhode Island
Another GREAT restoration, "Magdad!" I have to say that I actually enjoyed BOTH endings! Since Red is my favorite color, I really liked the look of the 1st ending, with the Red painted sections on that handle! 🙂 Then, again, I am ALL FOR restoring things to their original color schemes & so forth. Liked the black or the 'conservation' solutions best - I don't want tools I don't use, and don't really go for 'display' styles. But each to their own; it's good to see the process. If you are going for 'nearly original' then I wonder if there is some way to get the white 'Stanley' lettering applied as a transfer? That would look really good.
Dang M.D. That turned out beautiful.. I like the finished product on both of them. Normally I like the natural wood, but that black ⚫️ did look really cool... Until the next project, take care my friend...
Basic black. Looks great, but not too flashy so you don’t want to use it. You want to use these old tools, not just look at em. Good format with different finishes.
Beauty.... Great work as always. I prefer the second and third options, leaning towards the third. Make the tool look like it originally did. That is the ultimate preservation. Option one preserves some of the patina. Patina is an early form of rust which is a metal destroyer. Patina is too tools as cancer is too humans. As a cancer survivor (so far) I could not support any option that preserves patina. Michael from Canada
I like them both so it's hard to choose. I guess I would decide on the custom job. It's like a custom hot rod.... make it look like all the others or as I prefer a custom look that makes yours stand out from the pack.
What a great format. I like both 2 and 3... Although he easiest finish to apply is Patina! =D
Thanks ScoutCrafter! I'm glad you didn't mind me stealing your color for #2!
That is beautiful. You are SO good at tool restoration. I aspire to be that good.
Thanks Ben! Cleaning up old tools is fun!

Love the multiple restos. Not a patina boy here. The black handle is perfect! Thanks Magdad!
Thanks Stan! I'll have to try another project like this!
I liked the natural finish. You did a great job. All by hand no power. A old painter told me to first coat old wood with linseed oil and then proceed once it has dried. It helps the wood and also adhesion. I most enjoy your research of the patents.

Tough decision but I think the second finish with the red looks real nice.
Thanks Frank! Adding color to the fluting does make that handle pop!

@@357magdad Yes, I would have like to have seen that. Im sue you wold have made that very nice. Perhaps next time Magdad
The red flutes was beautiful and so was my favorite, the last one. Great job.
Thanks Jess! The red in the flutes was pretty hot!
Number 3 is the best. Beautiful job.

The red matching looks great. You got the wood grain to come out nicely. Well done.
Thanks! The red enamel and stained wood look good together!

I think I prefer the black handle. Beautiful paint job. Thanks again.

I love the choose your own ending. I loved the one done in red. God bless.
The red version was pretty cool! Choose your own ending projects are fun!
All 3 looked better than when you started but I’m going to say the black looks awesome Magdad. Well done 👍🏻
Thank You for sharing!
Thanks Jack! I like basic black too!

I like the red and black but I have to say the all black looked the best. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks John! It was fun trying different finishes on the same item!
I like them all but would prefer #1 in the tool box, the character makes it look like ya know how to use it!!☻
Thanks RoadKing! #1 is probably the finish I do the most, it just doesn't get made into a video.
The last one. Superb. I enjoyed the episode.
Thanks Juan! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Tough choice! Such decisions! I like #2 and 3.
They both came out pretty nice!
Headed to the shop to do the black handle on few of my Stanley’s. Love it.
Awesome! I'd love to see some photos! 357mdad@gmail.com
All three were nice, but I was surprised at how nice the last one came out - even better than the second one…top notch!
Thanks Carlos!
Nice restoration, nice piece for your collection. I like the end results. Definitely looks original. Thank You
Thanks! It was fun trying different finishes on the same tool!
Great job! I thought there was no way to change my mind after the red I. The handle, but the last finish is Wow !!!
Thanks Kris! It was fun experimenting with different finishes.
I love the red fluted one! Cool to do multiple designs.
Thanks Robert! It was fun to experiment with multiple finishes on the same tool.
Great video. The all black finish really looked awesome! More choose your own.
Thanks! I planning on doing more episodes like this!
Nicely done Magdad. I'm not a purist patina boy so I'm glad you made it look new again but i gotta say that the red and stained handle looks awesome!
Thanks Ivan! I'm working on another "choose your own ending" episode right now!
I am torn...the red looked great, but the black looks really nice also. Outstanding work. Cheers

I am a fan of the wood with red paint. I recently found a milllers falls flat screw driver that had a black handle. Unfortunately someone had beat it with a hammer and split two big chunks off the wood handle. I enjoy your channel.
I'm glad you enjoy my channel! I've had success with JB Weld's Kwikwood for doing "body work" on wood handles.
Digging the funk, man....... Gettin' down and throwing some moves with Mrs L....... 👍🏻🛠️
That's how we pick our music - if Mrs Magdad and I both start bouncing to the beat it's the one!
The over the top finish was on point!
It was fun to go all "ScoutCrafter" on it!

Hi Magdad , I like the Original Black look ! Nice Job on That . Multiple endings is up to you .
Thanks Wayne!
#2 was pretty sweet, #3 with the oem livery was a cool touch too. I always go with beautiful woodgrain tho so Imma have to go with #2. Well done on all three!
Thanks! I should have included an option with just a plain stained wood handle!
Old school black definitely! Very cool. Great idea
Thanks Larry!
Great job I love doing wood handle screwdrivers. I love the red in the handle the best but the black looked good too. You get the best of both worlds doing a project half wood and half metal.
Thanks Dillon! Wood handle screwdrivers are fun to clean up! The old Stanley models are also great tools for everyday use!
It looks perfect! That matte black is great! Tough choice between black and the red flutes but I really like the original look!
Thanks Bill. It's hard to go wrong with basic black!
@@357magdad my thoughts, exactly! LOL!
I choose door #2. With the red stripes I imagine it would be a screwdriver Buck Rodgers would be proud to own! Great job on all versions.
Thanks Douglas! Buck Rogers would dig it!
That screwdriver is absolutely stunning! I love the red in the flutes of the handle. However keeping it like it was originally is great also.
Thanks Stephen! Those flutes were begging for some color!
Very nice! I like the last one with the black handle! Thanks 😊 🙏
Thanks Mike! Basic black is a good choice!

As good as the second version was, the black handle really sets it off and is my favorite. Nice work.
Thanks Brian! I like the black too!
Cool idea. I like the wood look.
Thanks Paul!
In this case, I’d say number two. That looked awesome on this screwdriver. Well done with all three finishes, however!
Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I prefer the black, it looks great! The Scoutcrafter red was very nice too and I'd be happy to use any of them.
Thanks Jason!
The red flutes makes it all POP!

Great video and a very good idea it's must be no 3 very very nice thanks for sharing your time and remember stay safe and make 🍺🍺👍👍🇬🇧
Nice choices 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I like them all for all different reasons.
It's hard to choose!
Great job. All looked great, but I'm all for number 2.
Thanks Wire! No. 2 is the hot rod finish!
A show piece indeed! I love it. 👍. But I love all tools, even if they don’t work well.
Thanks Thomas! I hope to do another choose your own ending project in 2023!
The first was my favorite/preferred, but a combination of the bare wood, red flutes, and black for the ridges would be pretty cool, I think!
Thanks! I might have to try a color combination like that!
You're welcome!
Excellent job I like all three but prefer no 2 the red with stain handle looks excellent
Thanks Sean! The color in the flutes looks sharp!
an awesome job on all of them.
I realy dont like high polished stuff and a satin finish allways does it for me
Thanks! The matte clear over flat black has just enough gloss.
Awesome. I like the second over the top one. I've had much luck with the oxalic acid, I buy it pre mixed though. Makes it much easier.
Great idea!
Thanks Alex. A couple viewers suggested leaving the acid on longer and applying multiple treatments. I'm going to try that on a project I'm working on now.
All three endings are great! I The black is my favourite though, Excellent work Magdad!
Thanks Lila! I like the matte black too!
I LOVE the second 2. As a historian, I like preserving the patina, but personally liked the other two finishes better since they just look better LOL
Thanks for watching! It was fun trying different finishes!
I think I like the black handle. Interesting format and nice work overall.
Thanks Cory! I plan on doing this again!
Excellent job on all three endings. Personally I like the red fluting best 👍. Excellent tip about shellac on the end grain, thank you.
I enjoyed the multiple ending scenario but am just as happy with your usual approach.
Cheers Tim
Thanks Tim! I plan to try another choose your own ending episode in the future.
Seeing that red fluting was a real shocker, in the best way. Although being a stickler for tradition, I’m leaning to the black. For all my father’s old tools, which I use regularly, I always do the “conservation restoration”.
Most of the stuff I work on gets the "conservation restoration" treatment - they just never make it to RUclips!
watching your video, is a lot more pleasant than World News...entertaining...as always enjoyable...
Spending time in the shop is good mental therapy!
Thanks Joe! The matte clear over flat black seems to hold up well to daily use.
Without a doubt #1 is my choice...it still has the spirits of feeling in the wood that's why when you pick up one you think of those who used it before you...when you make it look new the feeling is GONE...when you use the older tools that still have spirit in them you seem to not be working alone 😇...
#1 is the way I restore most of the old tools I find. They just don't end up as RUclips videos.
Hello Magdad great job!! Both ways they look good but the black color looks better..
👍🇺🇸
Thanks! I like the matte black too!
Simply awesome. Great concept.
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
