The gerbil is actually a "miniature giant space hamster" named Boo. ^^
You should also check out the Baldur's Gate animated shorts, they are hilarious. :D

If you like the gerbil, you'll be happy to know that every single animal in the game can talk to you with full voice acting via a spell. There are multiple companion animals that can accompany you and some playable classes even let you summon additional pets or even turn yourself into an animal (temporarily).

Oh! Also to answer some questions! Mind Flayers aren't in FF at all, they're a pretty prevalent enemy within the D&D universe tho!
As for the giant walking owl creatures, those are called Owlbears, another common creature in D&D. They're awesome and if you play as a druid, you can turn into one.
The gerbil is actually a hamster and his name is Boo, he's the companion of Minsc (the awesome bald dude with the head/face tattoo that broke out of the chest in the trailer) and is part of the companions you can get later in the game. :)

There are mindflayers in FF14, albeit they are different than their D&D namesakes. They are a kind of voidsent, that sometimes turn up as boss battles in dungeons. The final boss of the Tam-Tara Deepcroft is literally called "Mindflayer," which is probably why the name sounded familiar to Solitary. The same kind of creature is also a boss battle in Amdapor Keep, if I remember correctly, though I think that one has a different name, despite looking alike to the first one.

In FFXII there is a Mind Flayer, it is one of the quest hunts, it is located in Giruvegan, on the way to the Great Crystal

The gerbil sure has a name and it is called Boo. Its the pet of Minsc, (the guy whose hairstyle you liked) very much loved npc from previous Baldur's Gate games. Btw Minsc describes Boo as a miniature giant space hamster, lol. Together they create an adorable duo.
The walking owls that you have seen are called owlbear and they are exactly what they sound like.
You should definetly play BG3! It is a great game

YES. 10000000% yes you should play!! I'm telling you this is the most insane, groundbreaking game I've played. I'm over 500 hours in and still finding new things about this game. The amount of detail the devs put into this will never fail to amaze me. It's a life changing game for sure!

Highly recommend bg3 and even checking out some more stuff! There are some trailers you missed as well as some animated promo shorts, these devs clearly love their game and it shows!

I would recommend reacting to the Baldur's Gate 3 origin character introduction scenes. They're good for getting an idea of how the companion characters (and potential player characters, though I would recommend going custom character for your first playthrough) are like character-wise.

I'm in the middle of playing this and this is definitely a BIG game. The massive variety in character creation, battle mechanics and inventory management can be a bit overwhelming at times. I don't often go for tactical/turn-based battle systems but they did a pretty good job with this
