I was curious as well on the lifespan of roses, so I googled. Some climbing roses will live 50 years, or more, while some of the modern roses will live 6 to 10 years. But speaking of the long-lived climbers, some friends of mine moved into a house built in 1923 (a Sears kit house, which is super cool). With the house came a garden journal (another cool thing). There is a climber still going strong, and it was planted in 1930. So, this year, that beautiful rose is 93 years old ❤️

Growing up we had a abandoned farm house near us built around 1860s. I was born in 1956. There was a beautiful pink climbing rose that bloomed dinner plate size pink cabbage type roses. By the time I grew old enough to think of it, the house had been demolished and the rose was gone. I have never seen a climber quite like it.

I have a neighbor who has her Grandmother's climbing rose from the 1930's. She dug it up when her Granny's house sold and it took right off in her own yard. I smile everytime I go by her house.

@Susan Quandt It really is! The house was in the same family until 3 years ago (when my friends purchased it). Each generation was pretty good about keeping up on the garden journal. Quite surprising really, but what a wonderful treat.

Local mountains here in So Cal RARELY get more than 4-6” of snow at a time.
Big Bear got about 10 feet in 1 week, Wrightwood 6 feet, Lake Arrowhead about 10 as well.
This was a historical snowfall. Weekenders ended up being stuck INSIDE for 7-14 days. Not good.
Taking a while to dig out.
    So!
Normally ready for normal snow. Unprepared for these back to back to back to back storms including a blizzard, which is exceedingly rare.
Will help with our drought, but melting snow MAY lead to flooding, mudslides, etc.
    A truly mixed blessing. 🌺🥶☃️

Good morning! Love your channel. I’m in Florida so most of what you do really doesn’t help me here in Central Florida but I have dreams. I have lived in the southwest and the northeast and had beautiful gardens but most of the plants I love only work in early spring here. Once the heat and humidity moves it’s a destroyer. I loved your succulent video and plan to give some of those a try.
Also, your heal pain will most likely go away with the use of arch supports and good shoes. I used to wear easy slip on shoes with no arch’s and the pain and on my feet walking real estate all day long, especially in the morning was so painful. My dr said “ look at what you are wearing! Needed more supportive shoes and arch supports and they changed my life. Give it a try! Get them at any pharmacy or big box store, Dr Sholls are my favs. And yes, after also getting cortisone shots which helped at first, I lost my vanity and purchased the supports and glad I did. It was 30 years ago and have never had a problem again. Best wishes!

Stretching your calves can help with heel pain! I have plantar fasciitis from being on my feet as a nurse. Once I learned to stretch my calves regularly helps, it was a game changer. Standing on a step with the ball of my foot and dropping my heel down gently over the edge, while holding the banister or wall, is an easy stretch to do before I go up the stairs. Hope this helps!

I agree, plantar fasciitis causes heal pain. I use plantar inserts in all my shoes even my slippers and do a few simple quick calf stretching exercises and the pain is in the past. Going barefoot and wearing shoes with thin soles often results in stretched fascia leading to heal pain.

Shoes. So much the shoes. I cannot wear shoes that don’t bend. They are not good for the soles of my feet.

    • @dannac_8888
      @dannac_8888 Год назад

Her "shoes" are not the root cause.
After watching her from the start of her channel she has always been, "in the dirt" with a intense amount of: lifting, pushing, twisting and pulling activities that MANY times are BEYOND her physical limitations.
(Watch her fight to pull up the root ball of a tree and fall, man handle 75 Arborvitaes to make a living fence and spend hours on her knees popping thousands of spring bulbs in the ground, etc.)
Your body starts to adapt to the weight bearing load it's expected to handle - tendons, ligaments and muscles become tighter to provide counter measures to adapt.
With a decade of daily rounded shoulders to lift, a leaning forward bent over posture that affects the head, neck and spine, her lumbar, glutes, hamstrings, calves and feet are CONSTANTLY attempting to COUNTER that body position.
When standing up now, the body starts to have a forward lean (albeit ever so subtle).
When the head and shoulders lean forward in an upright position, the FEET AND CALVES are actively/constantly attempting to pull you backward to the correct spinal and head position to create neutral.
So, at this moment, Laura's chest (pecs) is tight, shoulders (ant. delts) are rounded, the pelvis is in an ant. tilt, her glutes, hamstrings, quads, and calves are hypertonic as a result.
The calves tendons distally attach under the foot. With her standing in footwear with ZERO arch support she's pulled the arch out of her feet and may be experiencing the beginning of plantar fascitis - experiencing inflammation from the plantar muscles attachments to the heel as well.
      Solutions?
At the very least, she needs to have a PT deeply open up her calves to lengthen them and put slack back in the Achilles, address the anterior portion of calf and work on plantar flexion to ease the strain on the heel attachments.
Then, she needs to get on a good stretching and strengthening daily routine coupled with PT bodywork for corrective posturing.
An excellent performance insole in a high quality leather boot with a 70% merino wool "high cushion" sock is the chosen way to provide support, protection, cushion and breatheability to the foot and NEVER have injury or fatigue.
Why am I NOT recommending sneakers?
They aren't durable enough and the insoles are PAPER and breakdown too fast and provide inadequate support. They provide poor protection for the work that Laura does with small equipment. An 7" drill auger could tear up a flimsy cloth sneaker. I've seen it before.
They provide NO ankle support while working on unstable surfaces (rolling ankle slipping into a hole). The right boot will regulate foot temperatures and will conform to the shape of the foot to provide YEARS of use making it a better investment.
The last time she mentioned doing a yoga session on this channel, she reported her lower back sitting in the chair was, "killing her" because her back and lower body was not used to being stretched and she gave herself a good amount of soreness from it.
      She's not a weekend gardener.
      🙏

I get pain in my heel and have struggled with plantar fascitus for over a year and a half. Using insoles is great, but doing the ankle release maneuver from @human garage really helped. My pain went from an 8 to a 2 in just a week doing the move twice a day, total game changer.

Hey there!! Just wanted to let you know! Audio issues with the recap videos. Ever since you guys started using the mics on stands we hear a very noticeable thud every time Laura touches the table (or anything on it). We love the recap videos and our manner of viewing is through our tv with a sound system and sub. All of that makes us really hear that pronounced thud anytime that table Laura uses is touched. Thanks for all you guys do! We really do love your videos.

We do control burning of our meadows some springs . It helps with weeds and brush . I made the mistake of burning the ornamental grass off and accidentally set the meadow on fire ! Oh my heart stopping 😮thankfully we were able to keep it from spreading by lighting a back fire .

Laura, good arch support, we have the store The Walking Co. and we also get running shoes such as Brooks from our local running store (they are better than the big box type stores, I feel like the sneaker quality, even same name are better) Also, question, do you worry about the insects and such that are living in your old growth when you clean up before temps get warmer, I never know when the right time to clean up is.

Zone 5b. Lilly of the Valley spreads. I keep mine contained by planting them between the house and a sidewalk. My husband loves this plant. Without his love, I'd probably not grow them.

You can always grow lily of the valley in containers. I have several different invasive plants that I grow in containers. I grow strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries in containers so they don’t spread. I plan on planting some lily of the valley this year. And they will be in containers.

I recently purchased a covered metal tin at the Target Dollar spot for $5, that fits seed packets perfectly! It's about 12 inches wide, so I have plenty of room for expansion, as I don't have the same collection that you have Laura!!! I was thrilled to find it, as some of the seed packet containers are pretty expensive and I'd much rather be buying plants!!! 😀😀

Laura, your heel pain is likely plantar fasciitis. It happens to runners and anyone on their feet alot (like nurses like me!). Wear shoes with good arch support. There are a multitude of stretches for your feet you can search online to help. Love watching your recap videos every Sunday with my coffee!

    • @lindakay8171

Laura, I agree with libbyfritz7076. The arch supports that were recommended to me are Protalus that you can buy online. The stretches were very helpful also.

No! I disagree. Laura likes vans because they are flat. She she should look into minimalist/barefoot shoes. Using arch support is just coddling the muscles of the arch, when the foot should be getting and worked like any other muscle.

I’m in zone 6b Pennsylvania so Lily of the Valley SHOULD be invasive or at least prolific for me but the squirrels, chipmunks, deer etc don’t let them even get going! I live on a wooded lot so lots of animals use my garden as a buffet 😑

IDEA 💡Laura and Aaron do a "react" to your one year anniversary video (when y'all were "babies") and fill in any blanks and expand on what has happened since then.
I know SOOO much has happened. I remember Laura announcing her first pregnancy with Benjamin and I just can't believe how quickly time has passed haha.

I live in southern Illinois zone 6 I have Lillie of the valley in one of my flower beds and they are not invasive at all. They do spread a little but I want them to. I am going to put some starts in my hosta bed this year as a ground cover and hope it covers the floor of the bed eventually.
