Custom pavers with Benjamin & Samantha’s small hand prints would be a great addition to one of your walkways.
Susan Mason love that idea! Since it’s pavers, wouldn’t footprints be awesome!
Susan....that's a great idea....I have dated stepping stones with little grandkids' handprints, they love putting their now bigger hands on them to compare size changes. Plus I get to see them every time I walk down the stone path every day.
I’ve done the same; handprints in walkway pavers and a penny with the year for the date made.
Rosa glauca does well (and has the best foliage color) in light shade.
Good morning from Maryland. Happy Mother's Day to all of the great Moms, Grandmas, Aunts, Foster Moms, Guardians, Godmoms, Surrogates...basically love to all who love our children. It takes a village to raise a child. You are all loved and appreciated. PS I am going to be 70 years old this year and my two sons gave me a beautiful stone bird bath for Mother's Day...Best Present Ever!!!!!
Happy Mother’s Day to you, too! 💜

Laura using a glazed terracotta saucer as a coaster is so fitting. Love this recap!
I think that every single time I see it. 😊
I understand Laura's motivation for recommending garden centers after all her parents own one and she grew up in that business but I wish she would also recommend the local county extension agency to people because those are wonderful free resources that give so much to the community and they recommend the actual chemical not specific brands, they don't sell any of those products so they send business to garden centers. I have had the pleasure of using my local extension service as well as volunteering at the centers helping with the gardens, I started using local agency in 1993 and they have been a wonderful resource over the years. They are the ones who told me about many of the old established garden centers when I first moved to Florida in 1993, they always favor those over big box stores.
She recommends what she has experience with. She’s said before that she hasn’t used the extension office really as a resource because her knowledge comes from garden centers. You can’t get mad at her for not recommending something she hasn’t needed and hasn’t used.
@@alabastershelf3147 I started out by saying I understand why Laura recommends garden centers and I most certainly am not mad at Laura just because I said I wish she would also recommend the county extension offices. Even Aaron said "If you have a good garden center" (@ 12:18) and he grins at her because he knows that not all garden centers are like Andrews. I've been watching Garden Answer since before she was PG with Benjamin so I know the score when it comes to what Laura recommends. Just because I make a suggestion does not mean I am mad. So now are we clear about that @alabastershelf3147 ?
@@Maggie-Gardener-Maker the point is still the same. She doesn’t have to recommend something she doesn’t use. If you use and love your extension center, by all means make videos and recommend them. But she doesn’t have to recommend resources that she’s not familiar with.
@@alabastershelf3147 LOL, you miss the point and Laura can speak for herself unless you are a close friend who she told to leave this comment. Many viewers make comments "suggesting" as I did by saying "I wish" and if you paid attention you would see I did not say she "should" or she "must" as you are erroneously accusing me of. Now if you want to make a statement about my comment then you "should" make your own comment about this independently and not keep commenting on my comment, or better yet go make a video on your channel about it.
Where I live, Grand Junction, CO, our valley is full of orchards and grapevines. When frosts are forecasted during blooming times, orchards turn their fans or smudge pots. I've noticed quite a few wind mills being installed. Some years are bumper crops, and others are not. Agricuture is not an easy profession, but I have a huge amount of respect for those in that industry.
Don’t forget your local Cooperative Extension office…ALWAYS a wealth of information!!!
Aaron”we need more Laura” yes we do. Great recap guys. Happy Mother’s Day Laura and Susan🌸🌸🌸🌸
And Aaron's Mom!😊
Roses for shady areas (kind of like "dry clean only") Ha! I have a beautiful variety of shrub roses that are supposed to be for full sun... but, I live at the ocean where it is more foggy and dreary than sunny. My "Lyda Rose" shrub rose gets no more than an hour, sometimes two hours of sun a day (on our sunny days). The fog sometimes doesn't clear until after the sun is off the roses anyway. The amount of blooms is what will differ with less sun... more sun = more blooms (quantity) but if deadhead and trimmed back that forces more/bigger blooms. Roses bloom in fog, rain, and wild winds here but need care. I also have several "Knockout Roses" that do the same. Just pinch back, fertilize and keep the plant compact = better blooms in the shade. TEA ROSES or FLORIBUNDAS also bloom in these conditions here, same idea. They will produce far fewer blooms, but those blooms that fluorish will be huge and gorgeous! Roses and shade...it is doable. :)
I LOVE the way that gardening and something as simple as planting brings you so much joy. If only everyone could find something in life that brought them as much joy and purpose the world would be a much happier place. Thank you for spreading and sharing your happiness with us all, it’s contagious!! Love from Kathy - North Wales 🏴 U.K. xx
If you want a rose that grows in the shade look at the traditional English roses. In the U.K. the sunshine they get is VERY limited compared to where Laura is so if they thrive in the U.K. you’ll know that they cope well with cloud, rain, mist and general dullness!! 😂
I agree, I bought several David Austin roses that said part sun/shade, and OK for North facing, as our front yard is North facing, and we get sun around big trees. DA is great about giving all these specifics.
although, their northern latitude gives them daylight until 11 pm at night!! so when it is sunny/half-sunny it lasts way longer than at our latitude.
@@jenniferkessener1111 I am going to have to look into them since my trees are now taller and shading my roses (and sucking up their nutrients!)
Yes it’s overcast quite often here in the U.K. but that’s totally different to shade. Also the flowers don’t cope well with rain, it causes water spotting and can cause buds to rot before they get a chance to flower.
And my country is far from dull, it’s verdant green year-round without the need for water sprinklers and drip tubing.
I have a few roses on the north side of a fence, it grows well it just doesn't grow as large and bushy as the roses I have in full sun. Pruning is a little more stringent so when it bushes out it's less spindly but otherwise it looks great
That is my favorite pic of the pink tulips in the background with bright orange Sir Russell with a grin. We love this snapshot. Thanks for sharing Russell with us. Many blessings. Oh Laura by the way I’m watching this on Mother’s Day so with that said I want to wish you a very blessed day and Happy Mother’s Day.
Happy Mother's Day Thank you for making my mornings relaxing and inspirational. Have a wonderful day!
As an inexpensive alternative to problematic netting, I have had good success by tying 2-3 ft strands of holographic Scare Tape on the branches and canes of berry bushes. The breeze makes them flutter and scares away most birds. This method is more 'festive' looking than nets on a windy day, but it increased my berry yield dramatically. Wishing you all a Happy Mother's Day!
PINWHEELS!! and in the "old days" my grandmother would sting the metal milk bottle caps across her garden to do the same thing!! I have tried CD's with some success? except they look grungy after a while
Great idea. Thanks. That scare tape worked on my house, I can't believe I didn't think of it for the berry bushes.
For me it's the groundsquirrel/chipmunks, they are far too clever for this idea, I wish it would work. Last year I tied bird netting over my high bush blueberry and even tied it at the base tight. The chipmunk wriggled INTO the netting ate, them all and wriggled back out...he's a lil devil. He follows me when I feed the chickens too, waiting for the spilled scratch. I'm always torn as I love his tame antics, but he ate most of my blueberries last Summer haha.
Laura, you should advise viewers to go to their university county Extension with help to diagnose any issues. I’m a master gardener in two states and the horticulture agents are professional and are hired by universities.
Happy Mother’s Day to you and your sweet mom whom I had the privilege of meeting last month at Andrew’s Seed as we’re on our way to Texas!
I’m in Tx. Welcome to Tx! 👋🏻🥰
Happy Mothers Day! I live near an apple orchard and when we have frost or super cold temperatures the orchard turns on giant fans above the trees that are like 75 feet tall or so, somehow the wind generated from the fans keeps the apple blossoms safe! I don’t know how that works but that’s what the orchard owners told me😀
Happy Mother’s Day!
I enjoyed the videos of your sister and sister-in-law. It’s nice to see how small gardens can be done compared to large gardens. Each space for each garden were very pretty. Thanks for sharing all the information. I have learned a lot. Happy Mother’s Day’s to you and everyone that are Mother’s. Pat in North Carolina
Good morning, Everyone!!

I love how Laura is using a terracotta pot saucer! Simply fantastic!
I noticed that, too! It is the perfect coaster for her 😊
I literally laughed out loud when Laura said: well that's the only reason why I'm standing here - because I was wearing the proper PPE 🤣.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms. Love your videos Laura and Aaron! Your property is coming together so nicely.
Happy Mothers Day! 🌷
Laura, Farmers here in Michigan where frost season is pretty scary. We frost irrigate our apple trees. There's a drip system to wet and warm the ground/ trunks of trees and we also have sprinklers to wet the branches. Sometimes the trees end up being coated in ice. And the ice trees are such a beautiful sight to see in mass. The ice is an insulator and can save our crop.
You were also right about the windmills. We don't use that method, we reply on irrigating and the grace of God. If a frost (or in our case, hail last year) wipes out your crop, luckily you can purchase crop insurance. While it's a gamble, the years that it happens, we are so grateful for insurance. Love your channel!
Happy Mother's Day to everyone who mothers anyone!! Love this recap as I love all of them!💕🌷🌹🌿🌱❤
Happy Mothers Day, Laura, and to your mom! Your channel brings much joy and information to all of us who love our homes and garden! Wishing you a beautiful day!💐🌼🌞🌹🌷🌻❤️

I would love another garden tour. Once a week this time a year or twice is good for me!!
Yes, I agree!!!
Yes, agree also.
I love your backyard garden chairs that look like they do have support for your back too & comfortable! Our new country place has a gravel driveway and notice grass coming up through the stones & will be sure to ask landscapers to apply deadweed brew or will take the job on myself when outside in the garden. Always appreciate you & Aaron providing your expensive garden knowledge! 😍💕🌷🌳
Happy Mother's Day! I hope you have a great day with the family!
Happy Happy Mothers Day to you and your Mom!!! 🌹🌹 I have been trying to get lavender to grow and I am not having much luck with it here in Oklahoma. I had a dream the other night that you had a very large lavender field in your new property and you gave me some.
Full sun. Bad soil. Water in when u plant and then ignore. That’s how I do mine in the U.K. and it’s great.
@@wendymckee6627 Oklahoma has very different conditions than the UK. It’s very hot and dry here in comparison. So many variables including the variety of lavender used. My advice to anyone having trouble growing ANYTHING. Ask your local reputable garden centers or extension agents.
Yes talk to the OSU extension centers
Happy Mother’s Day to all! God Bless!
Wearing the proper PPE......😂😂😂😂😂😂 I'm DYING! I love your personality so much, we seem to be similar in that. This is one of the reasons I'm hesitant to start posting videos, everyone seems to have an opinion they don't mind sharing.

31:00 My elderly friend's late husband had an uncomfortable seating area in the entryway for guests that he didn't want to stay longer than a few minutes; Worked a charm! 🤔🤣
My dad built a wood structure covered with netting around his blueberry bushes. It works great, you just need to keep everything pruned enough so you can get around in there. I call it the reverse aviary😅
When my blueberries were growing in containers, I had the best luck using lightweight row cover to keep the birds away. The birds couldn’t see the berries through, so moved on. It also didn’t snag the branches.
Happy mother's day everyone
Happy Mothers Day to you and you Mom! Hope you have a fun and glorious Day!
Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's out there!

The 'netted room' is called a 'fruit cage' and I highly recommend it. I deal with squirrel, chipmunks, skunk, deer, rabbit, birds, I even have to plant my strawberries through wire chicken wire under the fruit cage because the chipmunk/groundsquirrel and rabbits just dig under and eat my strawberries.
Suburban Homesteader built some beautiful fruit cages, though I don't remember what he calls them.
Yes, fruit cages are very common. I especially see lots of English gardeners, like Cliff from Castle Hill, using them.
I would think Gardeners Supply has only that would work depending on the size needed.
@@Gigi-fv9ky Oh I love Cliff, you're right he has amazing versions of them from the large walk in fruit cage (what I was thinking of) to the smaller frames over brassicas and the like. It's a constant battle with animals here. I'm in coastal New England and we've lots of woodland and shore, so I have to share my crops often haha.

I could always watch an extra garden tour, never think you’re doing too many!
Local garden centers and IFAS offices are the best for information on your plants.
Next time someone asks you what you do, tell them you educate in gardening and design. I can't tell you how much I have learned from you. I saw a comment once from a guy who is a professional landscaper. He even admits he has learned so much from you an Aaron, an uses your designs all the time,an your choice of plants for his customers and they love everything. I admit I do the same. I would probably have passed by Cora Bells, but how they look with hosta's paired with bubble gum pink petunia's, I have a border that gets compliments all the time. You see things as an artist. I got my daughter watching you since they to just bought a home on three acres. They may not can do what all you have on your property, but she can get great ideas . Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. I know sometimes it's trial an error. But that's to be expected.
I’m in the UK (roughly zone 8/9) we do get some sun but it’s nowhere near as much as Laura gets. Especially this spring, it’s pretty much rained nonstop since January! I have Eustacia Vye, The Queen of Sweden, The county parson, Grace, Gertrude Jekyll, Desdemona, Benjamin Britton, Jubilee Celebration, The generous gardener and Ghislaine De Feligonde David Austin roses in my garden. They all do beautifully regardless of our rubbish weather. In fact I have Eustacia Vye and The country Parson planted at the back of my Hosta bed. They only get about 3 hours of morning sunlight before going into deep shade for the rest of the day. They bloom prolifically despite their lack of sun.
Yes a late frost can easily take a farmer of any spring crop’s whole years income away. A late frost after the winter wheat has jointed can destroy the years crop! Been there!! From a Kansas wheat farmers widow!
Zephirine Drouhin Climbing Rose does fine in part shade situations and is mostly thornless.
Who else hates it when they hear Laura say “and that’s it” 😅
They do such a great job it’s never enough and id watch Laura and Aaron over Monty Don any day!
I loved my gardeners world Fridays but now I sit there thinking I learn SO much more from Laura 😂
I love Laura and Aaron I don’t even know who the other person is 😂
Happy Mother's Day from Pennsylvania! 🎉
Happy Mothers Day...Enjoy...
Happy Mother Day to all. Hi fellow Marylander
Agricultural crops, fruits, use fans like Laura mentioned to move the air around to prevent frost.
Happy Mother's day Laura. Have a great day! Enjoy your family. Love your videos.
Another cheap version of a land plane is a simple drag. You can make one from an old mattress box spring (cut to desired size) and drag with a four wheeler ( put a few weights on to weigh it down) works exactly the same for next to nothing if you have an old box spring lying around.
I love your discussion sessions. Really reminds me of Howard Stern and Robin! LOL 🤣
Laura, please don’t ever hesitate to post a tour! Just shoot again. Spring is magical with things changing every day. As is the process of gardening, every little weed/chop/plant/mulch deserves its own respect.
Happy Mother’s Day from Colonial Virginia, zone 7b.
Vineyards in New Zealand use heaters that are app controlled to start automatically when the temps drop. They also have weather people who notify personally when it's in the forecast. 🙏
Oh my gosh, ‘ build yo’ self an engineered bridge’. If you two ever get tired of gardening (planting hollyhocks for instance) just take your comedy act on the road. You would think a weekly recap would get a bit boring but you have me laughing pretty much thru the whole thing every Sunday. Thanks for the joy!

I don't know what they do now but, fruit growers in the valley, I grew up in, used "Smudge Pots" that burned oil or kerosene to heat the air and keep frost off the trees. We had many apple orchards around us.
Happy Mother’s Day🌸
For your blueberries, look online for some ideas using PVC for structures. I painted mine green so they "disappear" and mounted the 1 1/14" fittings on top of T posts (which I also spray painted to match). The best bird netting is the kind that stretches. I wouldn't recommend hardware cloth as Aaron suggested. I have around 15 blueberries enclosed. I did not make a door but the sides of the netting hang down and can be lifted up so you can go inside and pick. Make sure to make your structure tall enough so you don't have to redo it as they mature. I found that out the hard way!
Yes wind machines help keep orchards warm, or the old school way of using smudge pots.
Happy Mother's Day to everyone who cares for others❤❤❤
Happy Mother’s Day!!
You two made me chuckle with you on your discussion about the quarter of a million dollar bridge. I totally understand limitations.
Happy Mother’s Day to you and your Mom!😊💖🌸
Farmers in my area sprinkle water on the blossoms of their fruit trees. This protects them from freezing, because when ice forms around the flower it releases crystallization heat.
Yes, wind machines help protect from frost and also running sprinklers when there’s gonna be a frost when you have fruit on your trees, it brings the temperature up because ground water is warmer than the air.
Happy Mother's Day 🎉 thank you for sharing your knowledge and humor. Always enjoy your videos.❤
Munstead wood rose tolerates shade more than most! It actually makes the color more deep and rich!
Yes, please also do a post mulch tour! 😅😊
Or if you have an extension office close by they should be able to identify the black spots on the leaves
Happy Mother's Day to you and the moms in your family! Enjoy your day!
Hello from Texas 😊 Happy Mother’s Day
I live in the Salt Lake Valley, and our climate here is cold and dry - very much like yours in eastern Oregon. (We’re a zone 7 upgraded from a 6). I’ve always had rose trees and have never lost one to the cold. To protect from winter cold, we make a chicken-wire cage around the tree base and fill it with fallen leaves, and then remove it in early spring.
Happy Mother's Day 💓
You can also ask your local Master Gardeners to identify diseased and stressed plant problems. They usually have plant clinics throughout the summer.
I totally agree with rearranging the arborvitae in Monica’s backyard! It’s all so beautiful , but when those things bug you and if that were my yard, that slight imbalance would be what I focused on every time I walked out there!
🌷🌷🌷 Great start to our day. Happy Mother’s Day Laura and friends! 🌷🌷🌷
Johnny’s has been around forever! I remember them from when I was a kid and I’m 70!
Happy Mother’s Day Laura.
The bridge is not a must have if you wanna have water on either side of the road.. if you want them to connect just have a big cemented pipe or a tunnel under the driveway for the water to run 😊! Love natural water features in gardens 🥰
