When my 4 kids were little (now all adults), that was my Mothers Day request every year…some alone time! It turned into a spring plant shopping day for me and continues to be what I do on Mothers Day. 🌸
I used to love that! Now I have 3 teenagers and I’m a little lonely when they are at school and work… but I still like my alone time 😉

@@miickeyp1695 What a special tradition you have going! My mom wasn’t a gardener (skipped a generation I guess). I did take my adult daughter and daughter in laws with me one year but then I didn’t have room for all my plants so they have to stay home now 😂
When my kids were little, my sweet husband would take them camping for Mother's Day weekend so I could have some "alone time" It was like a little piece of heaven.

They do still have “Home Ec”, but we had a name change in the 90’s. It is now Family and Consumer Science (FACS)! I have taught it for 22 years! So proud you knew the difference between T and t! Love Garden Answers!
I also took “home ec” in middle school and loved it! We not only learned how to freeze food (no canning) and how to sew a skirt, we learned different furniture styles, the color wheel with tints and hues. My family moved when I was going into 10th grade and I signed up for it the new school. It was completely different because most of the girls usually got married within a year or so of graduating. Insurance, flatwear, dish patterns, etc were the focus, none of which I was interested in but was important regardless of your plans. That was 55 years ago when girls mostly either got married, became a teacher or a nurse, period. Glad there are many more choices available now including what being a homemaker can be for each individual. 👌👏👍

My mom was my home ec teacher and I learned what T and t were all about when she showed me how to I make cakes and cookies from recipes found in her O'Keefe & Merritt cook book...which I still have.
Pumpkin is so great to have stored in your freezer. 😊 Just roast and purée, then store in freezer bags flat - makes it really easy to thaw out and make goodies with when the pumpkins aren’t ready. 😊

I grew some Jack be Littles this year and they are ready now...in August for petes sake! So I'm roasting them and freezing the pumpkin until I get enough for pumpkin bread or a pie. They taste great!

I got my shirt and hoodie a week and a half ago and I love the upgraded quality in both! The letters eventually peeled off my old GA crewneck but these are both a lot higher quality! Also, shipping was so fast! Great decision to upgrade your merch. Can’t wait for a hat and other items to come available. Several years ago, I watched a Jack Barnwell video where he was walking through a forest area that he and his father used to walk when Jack was a child. He said (paraphrasing) that his father taught him that the forest is like the ocean...always changing. The earth moves and those "waves" move the plants. Some trees fall and create huge earth mounds upon which other plants and trees will grow...I just remember being so comforted by that! It has helped me learn to appreciate the trees I have and while I mourn those I lose, I know their purpose will continue and they will live on in my memory. Cow! My husband and I are moving to the country (again and finally!) and I have decided I am going to have chickens and possibly a cow! My sister has a cattle farm and she thinks a milk cow would be a good addition for our new home. I am really excited! I will follow your journey, too, should you decide on that "next step"! Love your recaps!

Laura, please add some creeping phlox to the pond area. It creeps over and around rocks and put on a beautiful show! My garden is mostly on ledge, and I have a ton of native rock, the phlox tucked in softens it beautifully.
Great idea. I'm my area, creeping phlox is one of earliest bloomers and adds so much color. It blooms quite long in our cool Spring.
Make sure it is in a sunny spot.

I can SO relate to feeling a definite loss losing a tree. Almost like a death in the family. On the farm I grew up on (near where Laura and Aaron are), we had a really big weeping white birch. It was beautiful, and I spent a tremendous amount of time in my youth up in that tree. I would read books up there and watch the world go by from that high very private vantage point. Well, I moved away, my dad passed away, my mom and my brother and his family still were there. (My brother and his family were then living in another house nearby). My mom took a couple of years to spend time away, renting the house out to another family. During that time, the grass under the tree was removed for another project, so irrigation was suspended around the tree. No one thought about watering the tree and it died. I still morn the loss of that tree and it’s been years since any of us has lived there. I morn the loss of the farm, too, and I haven’t had a say in the running of that farm in decades, but I still feel it 😥
I can see where loosing a tree would be difficult. I try to keep all of mine as tight as possible, seeing as I just wouldn't know how to loose them properly.
I completely understand. Losing loved plants/trees, homes, etc. is like a death. The beautiful memories are mingled with pain. At least, that is my experience.

I’m so sorry Susan and those who have experience the loss of a real family tree-my father in-laws had a horrible storm take out his huge,historic beautiful tree last year and we as a whole family all mourned the loos of the iconic tree… it just held magical moments in our families daily life…it’s not only hurt our hearts to see it gone but it has us running for SHADE in the dog days of summer! It will forever be missed😢💚🌳

Hi Laura...love your channel. I had to laugh when you were saying that you don't always retain names of plants or whatever as fast as you used to. I mentioned that very fact to my Mom one day years ago and she explained it like this.....your brain is like a carousel that goes around and around, and if you can't think of the name, information, etc......just wait a minute and it'll come around again. I asked her what happens if the carousel goes around several times and you still can't catch the info.....she said "Oh Honey...your carousel is too full. You need to knock some stuff off of there!" She told me these words of wisdom when she was in her 90s. I was just so relieved to know I was not quite as bad off as I thought I was!!!

I graduated high school in '14, and I never had home economics. ☹️ Never learned how to do anything handy or homey or with plants or even taxes. Every school needs to bring that back! I totally would have taken it if it was an option!
I graduated in 1981 took home ec and shop was even offered to the girls! I took it that, too! Good experience 😁
So right! I had a home economics class and am now in my sixties! So many times I think, "Thankyou Mrs. Smith!"! (We lived overseas and went to an international school. )
How difficult on do many levels it would have been for me if I hadn't had that class!
It was so nice to see your mom and Monica in the garden center redecorating video. Your mom must be completely overloaded between work and the construction at their home. So sorry they had to lose the tree, but it will make room for new memories in their new space with their family and friends gathering there.

Can I just say how I love that you and Aaron chat with each other in the video recaps. I remember when Aaron didn’t participate much but then he gradually started talking and now it’s just so natural between you two. You guys are awesome! You both make me smile. The Cape plumbago is the tropical variety (native to South Africa) and they are BIG shrubs covered in sky blue blooms. It looks almost like a hydrangea. I grow mine in zone 9b in Japan 😊
We have them here in Tampa 9b too! They get big!
I grow mine here in 9/10, Santa Barbara California. They grow large and can be easily trimmed, if needed. They add such a beautiful blue flower to the garden. I'm thinking about the dwarf variety and wondering if I can find some.
I have them in GA too! They are sooooo drought tolerant and amazing!
Pumpkin cookies are great as well! My mom use to make them during the fall and winter months. She would leave some plain and then add raisons & nuts to some. Either are very tasty lol. After my mom passed away years ago now, as I was the only girl out of six children, I got all of her recipe boxes. (I had already copied many of them over the years), But Great memories on those stained and handwritten cards.

Chaco makes sandals specifically for river rafting & water wear and they're super comfortable! They have adjustable straps that hug all the right places, so stay put.
My go-to for hiking, river walking & everyday use. They make slip-on versions too!

I have 4 pins in my left ankle and completely flat feet 🦶 so chacos are my go to sandals, I even have Chaco boots! Although I’m a big Birkenstock fan as well!
I have owned Chaos for over a decade. I take them travelling, swimming, SUPping, hiking and love them. They also are easy to repair if the sole starts to come apart. :)
I love my chacos for hiking and water. I love the look of the style that straps around the big toe but hate how it feels, so I buy the style that does not have the "toe jail".
Woefully, both rudbeckia and echinacea are dear and rabbit food for me. I have both sitting out in my garden now, half eaten or eaten completely to the ground. I have to decide what I will keep and protect and what will go. Lilies are going first and I am planting allium in their place. So wish I could grow both of these plants but not worth the aggravation.

Hey, Aaron, I'm 5'4 3/4" and I definitely tell people I'm 5'5"! btw, you guys are so smart to take those daily evening walks, "post prandial" they're called! After dinner, helps with digestion, cooler part of the day, checking on and enjoying your property that you work so hard on, teaching your children, appreciating who made all things, and getting some valuable mild daily exercise (besides all the hard work you do!).
Always enjoy how you an Aaron enact on these videos. The knowledge you both have is endless. You show respect and love for each other that is beautiful.

Creeping phlox does not have to be dead-headed! When the blooms are spent, the foliage hides the blooms. It’s a lovely, easy care plant that slowly spreads and is easily propagated. It is the favorite plant of many southern spring gardens as a border plant. My mom used it to cover the top of a berm that separated her yard from her neighbors’ yards.

Oh my gosh! I hate my dianthus for the exact same reasons, but I haven't pulled it out yet because I feel bad since it is alive and happy where it's at. I bought them at the garden center 3 years ago! 😂 I have a ground-cover phlox that I love though, it does have gorgeous super early blooms and I never do anything to it and then it just loses the blooms and looks like a gorgeous little ground cover the rest of the year.
Me too! I hate digging up healthy plants. I was trying to think of a friend who might enjoy and take care of them. Until then....lol

Losing trees is so hard. We had to take out two huge trees in February. A white maple and a pecan. They were dying slowly and we could have kept them going but bit the bullet and had them removed. The change in our yard is enormous and has been tough to adjust to. We’re looking at it as an opportunity to redevelop the yard. It’s a slow process but should be great in the end. Mourning the loss is sometimes much heavier than others.

At some point as a mom of littles, I switched over to making any & all sweet breads in muffin tins. No more mangled loaves, no need for me to cut (and cut, and cut). I love using the Wilton cupcake batter spoons to measure the right amount for each muffin. Game changer so everyone's muffin was the same.
Also, if you like peanut butter, mix some peanut butter and brown sugar together. Make your Banana bread recipe, but fill your muffin tins about 1/3rd full . Place a teaspoon +/- of the peanut butter mixture in the middle of each muffin. Top with the remaining batter, making sure to cover the peanut butter and bake as usual. My kids loved coming home from school and finding "Peanut Butter Surprise" muffins waiting for them. (Sorry, I don't really have a recipe for the peanut butter mixture, I just made it up one day to put some protein into the muffins.)

To the lady in Montana who wanted to know about winterizing, I might add to drain garden hoses and if you have HoseLink hoses bring them inside. The sprayers break if left outside over our cold winters. I live in WI zone 4b and I learned the hard way.
I’ve hesitated to mention before-the dust from fertilizer. A good point from - and this from a gardener with a lung disease caused from inhaling fertilizer and other chemicals. This takes a toll over the years. Just please try to limit dropping from a standing position or wear a mask during that application. Don’t mean to get in your business - just sending love from a damaged body
I love wheat germ sprinkled on top of ice cream that’s got a little honey drizzled on top. Plus that’s where a lot of nutrients are like vit. E.

When I was a kid here in UK my dad had two Jersey cows and used to milk them each morning, just sitting on a milk stool, using a metal pail. After 2 hours in the pantry we'd skim 1" of cream off the top. So delicious. Cows were very friendly and safe near us little children, dad even sat us on their backs. Lots of cow pats of course, lol.

I planted roses earlier this year. When they bloomed my security cameras picked up 3 women with scissors and bags removing my blooms. 😢😢😢 I had Morticia rose bushes for quite a while. I posted pictures of each of them on my fencing. Yes they reached in to take them.

My wife and I found our Desert Orchid at the Zamzow's in Nampa close to Lowe's on the Nampa Caldwell blvd. We were actually on our way out, couldn't make up our mind and thought the heck with it and we found it outside. One of the store employees said it was a return. We love it and it smells so good.
You guys don't know it but Garden Answer joins me in my morning run at the gym 6 days a week, so thank you for such positive and uplifting content.

Regarding Elderberries, please note the berries are poisonous when green/not ripe so do not ingest until they are fully ripened.
Additionally there are species that are not for human consumption ripe or not, be careful, be educated before eating anything from the garden or the wild
In NY, we call the class FACS - Family and Consumer Science. My sixth graders have a half-year (20 weeks) of cooking and kitchen skills then a quarter of sewing and a quarter of career exploration. Classes are not segregated by gender. The classes are using small kitchens that were just reconfigured with better space allocations and new appliances. They also make videos of skills or cooking at home.
I’ve watched your videos religiously for YEARS…. Started with “how to prune a rose bush” (in the townhouse). You’ve been deemed “my friend Laura” ever since. I’ve never commented before - this video got me for 2 key items that stuck a cord.
1) Aaron…. “Going to a Vikings game with my family” - you caught my heart as a born and raise MN sports fan! 💜💛🏈 (Although currently living in the border in Fargo, ND)
2) “Some people are just not socially aware.” We built a home on a 2 acre wooded lot and planned out my DREAM garden while we wait for grass to grow and winter to subside. (It’s an enclosed garden due to heavy deer, turkey, groundhog & rabbit pressure.) it was PERFECT. Someone bought the lot next to us…. Ripped out ALL the trees…. And put a TWO HUNDRED FOOT driveway ON the property line. WIth a 30’ shed at the end. (RIGHT in the property line - RIGHT behind the BEAUTIFUL garden we’ve been working on for a year. The orchard planned behind is no longer feasible due to the infrastructure (and ascetics)….
3) And 9 of our established trees’ root systems near that edge have gotten damaged from the driveway work - according to our arborist. They need to be removed.
It’s so disheartening trying to understand people’s selfish thigh processes…. They also have 2 acres and saw what we were doing… I just don’t get it. 😢
I feel so bad for you! You have our sympathy. It’s a sad thing when care for this beautiful Earth is lacking!

Seachem Purigen in the filter sump will clear the tannins out within 2 days, depending on how much you use. And the Purigen can be rejuvenated if fully loaded. Its also fish safe, seeing that its an aquarium product.

You provide a great example of a healthy family, especially with your mom and sister appearing in videos and then showing projects that you do for other family members. Your gardening information is awesome but I think the role models you provide are even more important.

Your speaking of the stress to get flowers to look like the Bonide logo reminded me - we have an event that lasts all summer long, It is called the Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail. It is gardens shaped as specific quilt patterns spread around Elkhart County, Indiana. You have to drive it - it is spread out all over the county and it celebrates both gardening and the heritage of quilt making which is very prominent in our area.
I have been to view the quilt gardens several times. So pretty but I'm sure it's a lot of work to maintain them all summer.
I've always followed the ABC's and 3 D's of pruning. Acute angle branches, Bent branches, and Crossing branches; Disease, Dead, and Dying/Damaged branches.

Like you Laura I’m not really that bother about spending money on clothes but anything garden related is a different matter.
