This breakdown can be read a few ways: -His deal has weakened him, and nearly resulted in his death, while he was genuinely wanting to help protect the Hotel, and he was freaking out at LOSING for the first time since he hit Hell and how he nearly died and now wants out of the deal so he can be better at helping Charlie and promising revenge on the person who has his soul for making him fail Charlie. -The deal is forcing him to help the Hotel to the point where, against his will, he was nearly forced to sacrifice himself for it, and he is freaking out about this and promising revenge on the person who had his soul for nearly getting him killed. -The deal is unrelated to the Hotel and is keeping him weaker and less powerful and from accomplishing whatever his true dastardly motives are and he is swearing to break free and pull off whatever he has planned. (Note: these are not mutually exclusive. It could be more than one or even all three at once.) I LOVE Alastor's ambiguity.

I agree with the Theory that he’s helping with the hotel only because of the deal. I think his “only helping because I want the entertainment” spiel is his way of saving face and not looking weak/altruistic, which most overlords would see as weakness. But now that he’s been forced to genuinely defend the hotel against a more powerful being and lost outright in front of all Hell, he’s lost face and infamy in terms of others respecting his power I agree 100% that his current goal is gonna be to manipulate Charlie into getting him out of his deal with whoever, probably Lilith but the eye theory is interesting

I love how “killed by a *hair*” is so enunciated, because it also suggests that Alastor means it as in “killed by a hare”, or at least it does to me. "The constraints of my deal surely have a backdoor" quote might be referencing the Alastor and Roo theory. Roo is short for 'Root of all evil' and she is a demon who was announced by vivziepop a while ago. Roo grows stronger with the more souls she consumes, and she might have made Alastor weaker because he wanted too much control in the fight with Adam. Husker even said a few episodes ago: "Big talk for someone who's also on a leash" meaning he might know about Alastor and Roo. Roo is probably the source of Alastor's power too.
remember everyone, just because you see a smile, don't assume you know what's going on underneath it. and always smile, your never fully dressed without one.
“Being killed by a hair” is a pun, you can also read it as “hare”; he’s insulted that, of all people, Adam nearly finished him… this, *after* he promised to kill the first man. Of course his sanity’s fraying; losing was a wound to his pride.
You can see Alastor is pained by this deal, he doesn't care for the others, he nearly died for something he had 0 honest investment in, my guess is once he gets out of the deal, he's gonna become some big antagonist or somehow change his ways which seems less likely, such a cool character
He actually did have investment into the hotel he even says so in the Pilot and towards Mimzy that it was his project. It's just his investment is completely different from Charlie's. Also to say he doesn't like the other members is also wrong since he said he grew some what fond of them when he was laughing with Niffty.
Vox recorded the fight and thought Alastor Missing after the big battle. Next season I kinda wanna see him isolating himself at the hotel. Pulling the strings in the shadows, but also being forced to socialize with the rest of the Staff/guests. More group interactions 👏
0:30 my personal theory is the contract gave alastor his permanent smile, like no matter how he’s feeling he can never stop smiling as a part of it. I mean look at the way he rubs his face it’s right at his cheek bones, what made me think this originally was also the scene where Charlie makes a deal with alastor and you see the green stitch marks running all the way up his face kind of like a messed up face lift.
It makes me think that maybe the deal was that Alastor needs to be friendly and help people in exchange for immense power, and it is a wound to his pride that Alastor "lost" in that deal. Hence he is forced into his role of deal-maker, since the deals "help" people, and he's fixed with his smile since it appears "friendly" (which it doesn't but it fulfils the terms of the deal).
Honestly, given he practiced voodoo (and yes, given his upbringing, he would likely call it voodoo, dude's from Louisiana), those stitches are part of his full demon form. Whether he's forced to smile by some sort of magic or it's just part of his appearance since manifesting, he's obsessed with always smiling. As he puts it, it inspires your friends, keeps your enemies guessing, and ensures that no matter what comes your way, you're the one in control. Whether he's forced to smile or imposed the permanent grin on himself, he clearly believes in it, as a form of showmanship and intimidation.
@@LokiScarletWasHere just like alastor it’s very vague what the context or planning around him is but what makes me think that the most is if you notice in scenes Alastors eyes NEVER match his smile no matter what emotion, and this scene is a great example he looks like he’s on the verge of having a psychotic breakdown trying to reassure himself that his deal must have a loophole but he just cannot stop smiling as he rubs his face.

Vivziepop knows a lot about demonology. From ancient Greek, the word Alastor translates as avenger. The Infernal Dictionary presents him as a powerful herald in the service of Hell, with deer ears and horns, sometimes with hooves. This entity is associated with Nemesis, the goddess of punishment and justice; he pronounces Satan's sentences and carries them out. Origen believed that Alastor and Azazel were one being, other sources believed him to be one of the exterminating angels. That said, I believe this character's primary motivation is the pleasure of taking revenge on violent sinners. He didn't try to harm the positive characters, limiting himself to harmless taunting and intimidation without using force. On the other hand, he brutalized gangsters defending the hotel and attacked Adam with hatred, forgetting his own safety. Also, given that we're shown that he doesn't like touch and is asexual, I think he's more of an absessively compulsive psychopath with a heightened sense of justice
@@marieguillou8808 actually it means "avenger" of "defender of man" and was an epithet of Zeus. Although I think Alexander also means defender of man.
it’s sad because he realized he almost died protecting other people out of anything else. i feel like he smiles because he can’t express how he feels. his emotions just show in his eyes :(.
This may sound sadistic, but its just too satisfying when he says "The constraints of my deal surely have a back door" cuz... well, its just nice to see HIS panic for a change. Not some powerful overlord who always maintains composure but a HUMAN soul, under the control of someone else...
I certainly don't. I like him, but in the same way I like Scar in Lion King. He's entertaining, but I have no illusions on whether or not he is a monster.
This is why i love Alastor so much! There's so much mystery to him like who did he make a deal with? What's he planning? Why is he interested in getting Charlie involved? I also love how it's honestly hard to tell where he's gonna go. I mean it's setting him up to be a villain. But will he remain a villianois character? Or will he be redeemed in some way? Because it seems like he's beginning to genuinely care about the group but he's also trying to push them away, as if he's in denial that he cares. I cannot wait to see what they do with him!
Well I love the detail this is one as he is walking to his radio place thing you can see blood dripping on to the ground and also how taunting he sounds
It’s mind boggling how many people think this part of the song means that he’s somehow now emotionally attached to the other hotel residents. This song is showing us the exact opposite, and it’s so obvious. He’s not only mocking the idea that he would do something like die for friends, he’s laying out that he is tethered by some deal that is prevention him from unleashing his full ambition. He’s lamenting his own situation, he doesn’t care one whit about how the others are doing.
Actually, i personally think its somewhere in the middle. Yes, hes absolutely mocking the idea of dying for anyone else, but i think hes also realizing how close he let himself get to the rest of the Hotel residents. So close, in fact, that he risked his life for them, and almost getting killed made him realize that. Its almost like hes saying "did i just almost die for the sake of others??"
Ok but... he did almost just die for the hotel. That happened. And he's angry at himself for letting it happen. He HATES the idea of dying for someone else, and he HATES the fact that he almost did exactly that. It's a moment of realization « oh shit, when did I let myself get close enough to do THAT? ». I don't think Alastor cares THAT much, but saying he doesn't care at all is too much.
This sort of does a disservice to Alastor as a character. What's really mind boggling is people thinking he's just one dimensional. Yes he's upset about his deal that he made and that he can't go all out or do whatever he wants at the moment. But he's mocking the idea of dying for his friends because that's exactly what went down since no one expected him to do such a thing since he is who he is. Alastor almost died for the Hotel and was getting too close with the guests viewing them as friends. He even says that he was growing fond of them when he was talking with Niffty
Alastor is definitely my favorite character (well he's a lot of people's favorite lol) and he is so intriguing. Definitely not what he seems to be. I really hope that he does get redeemed in the end and it does seem like he might be slowly headed towards the path of redemption, considering how viciously he defended the hotel against the loan sharks (even if it was partially for sadistic pleasure/to ensure the continued existence of his "entertainment") and turned cold towards Mimsy for bringing such danger to the hotel. He didn't exactly deny it either when Mimsy asked "surely you don't actually care" which okay might've been part of his act to get Charlie and the others to trust him but I would like to think maybe subconsciously he does care too or is beginning to. He even said that "I have to admit, one could start to get accustomed" to Niffty. I think here he is panicking partially because he nearly died but also partially because he realized that he nearly died FOR HIS FRIENDS. It might have just been him mocking the concept (sorta like "ha, what a silly notion! Alastor nearly dying for his friends!") but I'd like to think it was partially real too lol. It's so telling yet sad how he retreats to his radio tower, he really does see it as sort of his sanctuary. It's telling that he didn't retreat to his room (then again the hotel was kinda falling apart so maybe that was a wise decision, thought the tower had kinda fallen too) but rather to his radio station. Unless his radio station is attached to his room? Still, he didn't have to go up there since he was clearly struggling just to climb up. Gah, I really feel bad for Alastor in this scene, I wanna hug him but I know he would definitely hate that lol. It seems pretty clear that he is definitely Ace (in the hole) but idk how touch-averse he is in general? He's pretty quick to touch others but that could just be part of his persona and a way of getting others to trust him/to annoy them/to demonstrate dominance over them. Either way he doesn't like being vulnerable or seen as weak, that's for sure. Seems like Alastor waited a day or so to return (once they'd almost finished rebuilding the hotel). He probably would've come back sooner and helped with the repairs, but he probably was still kind of weak and recovering from his fight with Adam, and he didn't want anyone to see how badly he'd been wounded. Husker mentioned how nobody knows why Alastor had been gone for those past few years (I think maybe they said three?) which kind of implies perhaps Husk knows and is probably the only one who knows in fact. Well, possibly Niffty as well, who knows? But it does make me wonder, why was Alastor gone for so long? Where did he go? Did he retreat? Was he in hiding maybe because he got into a bad fight and so he left to recover/gain more power before returning? And there's still the question of who Alastor made a deal with exactly. The way he reacted to Zestrial and the way Zestrial treated him makes me wonder if perhaps Alastor made a deal with him or something?

Noticed something, but how much do the Red Eyes, that seemed to be a symbol for hell, appear? They appeared in both of the story book section in the Pilot and EP1, and they appear in the holes and cracks in Alastor's radio room.
"Once I figure out how to *unclip my wings-"* THAT PART ALWAYS GETS ME TO BELIEVE THAT ALASTOR WAS ONCE AN ANGEL, BUT NOW HE'S UNDER LILITH'S CONTROL!!!!!
It’s kinda like you can hear his voice..like the static is taking over him, you can tell that he had genuine emotions doing this, cause as he sings the radio kinda disappears 😢
"Once I figure out how to unclip my wings" is a dialogue which literally means he was turning good but when he realized it, he had a breakdown and wants to stay in hell
I love how in the Pilot he was mocking Charlie for evem entertaining the idea of a sinner escaping hell and now he wants to do just that but instead of going to Heaven he wants to escape his deal( his personal hell)
so it seems to me he may be wanting to take over hell ("pull the strings") and free himself from the deal. I doubt it has anything to do with the hotel or charlie, and whatever he's up to is more intended to somehow use charlie for his ambitions and free himself.
You know what would be an interesting twist Alastor finally breaks free from his deal and Charlie is forced to get Vox to help stop his plan to gain control over hell after finding out what he’s really like

HOLLOW KNIGHT
Alastor realized that he almost died protecting other people of all things and had a mental breakdown.
I can't get behind the theory that Lilith is forcing him to protect Charlie... he's not exactly someone a parent would want around their child given he's a former...SERIAL KILLER.
My theory is he only went missing for 7 years because Lilith went missing and he was desperately trying to find her...not because he cared for her but because he couldn't find a way to wiggle out of the deal through loopholes or blackmail or whatever if he can't even find her and/or communicate with her. For all he knew she was dead or being held captive by somebody who's one more powerful person in between him and his freedom.
He only "returned" because he witnessed Lilith's daughter on TV looking extremely vulnerable, naive, pathetic and thought to himself, "Here's a young emotionally vunerable person who's potentially more powerful than either of her parents or almost their equal...I could totally manipulate and gaslight her for my own agenda."
Perhaps he hopes to gain Charlie's trust to "guide her" (as he mentioned to Rosie and he also mentioned how powerful she likely is) and manipulate her in order to manipulate Lilith, have leverage etc. Perhaps he thinks she'd be powerful enough to break his deal if he asked...which is likely what he sorta hinted at when he made a deal with Charlie "Ask one little favor that'll hurt no one...." because it technically wouldn't immediately hurt anyone to break his deal but I suspect once he's free it will backfire tremendously and he'll need to be stopped.
I don't think he really feels much for the inhabitants of the hotel and he wasn't risking himself to protect his "friends" because he cares... its because he's become that desperate for freedom and more power.
His panic here is not because he realizes he cares for people or because he's being forced to protect them....its because he's realizing just how desperate he is and how vulnerable he truly is having fought with and witnessed infinitely more powerful people. His vulnerable narcissism is causing him a crisis after being defeated.
I could totally see him being power hungry enough and bloodthirsty and ruthless enough to want to rule all of Hell.

he is 100% into the idea of doing all this. but the fact he has had allll his control taken from him and is acting as a peice on the board, rather tahn the one moving the pieces themselves, is eating him alive.
it got even worse when he nearly died... it might not even be he fears death all that much, but he cannot stand the idea of dying literally JUST at the beginning of the game.
That's what he is planning on I bet. I think he wants to manipulate charlie and drive a wedge between her and vaggie, get charlie to fall for him, become a "couple" with her, and use that to get closer to Lucifer so he can try to coup him.@@amandasnider2644
omg that thought reminds me of Zuko getting extremely sick for doing the right thing in ATLA
If I may paraphrase the Grinch:
“Oh no! The hotel! The guests! They’ll be destroyed! And I care?! What is the deal?!”
This breakdown can be read a few ways:
-His deal has weakened him, and nearly resulted in his death, while he was genuinely wanting to help protect the Hotel, and he was freaking out at LOSING for the first time since he hit Hell and how he nearly died and now wants out of the deal so he can be better at helping Charlie and promising revenge on the person who has his soul for making him fail Charlie.
It could be more than one or even all three at once.)
I LOVE Alastor's ambiguity.
Yep, he is shocked with his own weakness in against Adam, it seems like his deal is really constraining him. He also looks like he caught himself protecting the hotel instead of having fun observing cataclysm. And he probably does not fancy dying. Cool observation on your side. So many orph... meanings
Also when it says Mr alastor altruist died for his friends he's being sarcastic, meaning he could be in denial that he's going soft from the absolute menace he was before the deal weakened him so he's trying to find a way out of his deal before it's too late cause for some, being a good person and being weak tend to be viewed the same way.
What if the deal actually makes him stronger? But at the cost that he needs to serve the person he made the deal with
I think people are too hopeful to choose anything but option 2

I agree with the Theory that he’s helping with the hotel only because of the deal.
I think his “only helping because I want the entertainment” spiel is his way of saving face and not looking weak/altruistic, which most overlords would see as weakness. But now that he’s been forced to genuinely defend the hotel against a more powerful being and lost outright in front of all Hell, he’s lost face and infamy in terms of others respecting his power

I love how “killed by a *hair*” is so enunciated, because it also suggests that Alastor means it as in “killed by a hare”, or at least it does to me. This makes him seem so much more brutal, thinking of Adam as just prey, but simultaneously distraught by how close Alastor’s prey was to killing him, as if Alastor’s thinking “how could I, of all people be threatened by that insignificant little-“
I fear no elil
OMG I had the same thought why did He say hair like that its like he wants us to pay attention to that line deffo sounds like he was meaning Hare as in prey
'by a hair' is a statement of how narrow the margin for error was. 'By a hare' is just reaching for hidden meanings.
Not really, Adam one shot Sir Pentious with zero effort, he wasn't the leader of the exterminators for no reason
@@xTotenkreuz using Pentious was sort of a bad example since he wasn't all that strong to begin with. He was just very technologically smart and good at battle strategy, hell he almost lost to Angel Dust in a fight.
I also like to think he will amp up the evilness because he IS starting to grow fond of the Crew.
He actually did have investment into the hotel he even says so in the Pilot and towards Mimzy that it was his project. It's just his investment is completely different from Charlie's. Also to say he doesn't like the other members is also wrong since he said he grew some what fond of them when he was laughing with Niffty.

No kidding, I even said I wouldn't wipe my data and here we are
0:30 my personal theory is the contract gave alastor his permanent smile, like no matter how he’s feeling he can never stop smiling as a part of it.

This song single handedly confirms Alastor will be the main villain, and will rival Lucifer in power once his restraints are removed
I found that "Alastor" was the old Welsh version of the first name "Alexander".
@@marieguillou8808 actually it means "avenger" of "defender of man" and was an epithet of Zeus. Although I think Alexander also means defender of man.

I think they symbolize Evil, which feels like it may or may not be a character
0:17-0:23 That one friend 5 minutes after having a meal
I love how sad but insane it sounds, perfect for alastor having a mental breakdown, i would do this if i had a mental breakdown
"Once I figure out how to *unclip my wings-"*
THAT PART ALWAYS GETS ME TO BELIEVE THAT ALASTOR WAS ONCE AN ANGEL, BUT NOW HE'S UNDER LILITH'S CONTROL!!!!!
No he was serial killer, so he can't be an fallen angel
I LOVE HIS SINGING
It’s kinda like you can hear his voice..like the static is taking over him, you can tell that he had genuine emotions doing this, cause as he sings the radio kinda disappears 😢
i love how he goes "BeInG KiLlEd BY A h a i r"
The part when alastor says once i figure out how to unclip my wings gusse who will be pulling all the strings gets me excited for the next season
"Once I figure out how to unclip my wings" is a dialogue which literally means he was turning good but when he realized it, he had a breakdown and wants to stay in hell
*Alastor my man, probably not a good idea to be in a room that’s completely demolished*
Alastor is the best character ⬇⬇
Damn, I think he might be having a bit of a breakdown.
Are we just going to ignore the fact that alaster is smiling when he is haveing a BREAKDOWN LIKE WHY FREE MY BOI
I love how in the Pilot he was mocking Charlie for evem entertaining the idea of a sinner escaping hell and now he wants to do just that but instead of going to Heaven he wants to escape his deal( his personal hell)
So much bullshit, why bother when I can have the last laugh, since I'm not given what I need
so it seems to me he may be wanting to take over hell ("pull the strings") and free himself from the deal. I doubt it has anything to do with the hotel or charlie, and whatever he's up to is more intended to somehow use charlie for his ambitions and free himself.
You know what would be an interesting twist Alastor finally breaks free from his deal and Charlie is forced to get Vox to help stop his plan to gain control over hell after finding out what he’s really like
This was enjoyable to watch as I never really liked him that much so seeing him have a near nervous breakdown was so satisfying
Dude realized he was becoming a good person and he was like “Oh Naw!”
0:38 I like that angry squirrel face of Alastor
Imagine keeping your smile through that
The animation throughout this entire scene is enchanting
0:38 his ears fold😭💞
once i figuer out how to unclip my wings GUESS WHO WILL BE PULLING ALL THE STRINGS HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😈
Момент, где он хватается за голову и говорит: «У моей сделки должен быть обход», очень подходит. Ты буквально продаёшь душу дьяволу, когда хоть один раз рисовал плакат для школы
Ain’t gonna lie fellas,
I always viewed this as a
“Alastor gets beat 1 time and throws a hissy fit after it checked his ego”
I cant get out of my head everytime i hear this song i think THIS PLACE WREAKS OF SE-
I just started watching these y is Alastor like that and what freedom is he talking about like isn't he the one who takes other people's souls as a deal
his soul is owned by someone too, probably lilith or maybe ‘roo’, he wants to get free from his deal
ok thanks
Such a good edit. Watched this the other day and didn't subscribe, so have mine today ❤. Also, this is my favourite moment of the whole song no joke. I love Alastor so much in this show.
Fun fact: vox and alastor are parallel they are the same since they used to be friends and act like each other in the song insane if kinda gave it away which is why they both scratch the tables and both say "heha what did you just say"
Its sad when everyone was singing together and fixing the hotel without Alastor...
