This lady was my neighbor on Chicago Southside 90th and king dr. In 1964, yes for REAL ! , very nice lady, was always working on her yard when she wasn't touring. Had a " drunk " for a husband. A " Jim dandy" chasing skirt. Spoke to her a couple of times, skipping down her block to go play with my school friends. And yes! Her hair was Real long, she kept it pinned up under a scarf or netting. Had a nice ride, l think it was a " Buick"?. Yes a very beautiful blessed woman too !. Miss her voice! Now that was SINGING!.
"You can go 40 days without food.3 days without water. 8 minutes without air.But you can't go single second without God.Amen!Whatever may happen in this world;Christ remains unchanging forever & ever"🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yeah. . crowds were a bit more reserved then. I'd preferred ppl who let the "paid musicians" be heard to be the ones at my concerts if I were the one singing ... ijs
I had the great honor of hearing Mahalia in Hanover in 1971. I will never forget her performance. Infinitely impressive. Really huge voice, RIP Mahalia
Awesome. Bit to young dit that myself. But being the third generation blessed with having been introduced to her music... I did get blessed to have met a fan of hers, Aretha Franklin. Both woman blessed by the spirit. Though personally Mahalia I listen when I need to cry and find my strength. Well it makes it easy as a sunday morning with them singing in church to get into the state I want to be.
Mahalia's power, passion, few can match it. My go to if I feel I need it. Aretha was a lovely lady though. Also awesome singer with soul and passion. With Ella Fitzgerald for me a "holy trinity" as a matter if speak, without intent to diminish the good Lord. They are angels of Him He blessed us with to aid our souls with their soulfull singing.
I can't believe I hadn't listened to her before. I have tears streaming down my face at the sheer Glory of God that gave us a voice like hers. And how grateful to know that beyond her bodily departure, her music is still with us and can still bring the Spirit into any of us blessed to hear her songs.
She far outclasses any of the Gospel Music "stars" out there today! They're more in love with themselves than they are with our Lord! This woman was IN LOVE WITH GOD, and He offered her His Sweet Anointing!
You may have said a mouthful, brother. Many of the gospel albums in Mahalia's day had pictures of churches or the cross or some other emblem on the cover. Now you see gospel "divas" dressed to kill and decked out on the CD covers. It's impossible to believe that God is glorified. But that's what impresses the masses.
@@MrCJ-qz9dl You also said "a mouthful"! So true and so sad! God anoints those who seek to worship Him IN TRUTH and use their gifts for His presence and glory! He "resists the proud". Can't wait to meet her in Heaven!!
I noticed that same theme with the aged preachers ..like Smith Wigglesworth..Mother Etter..Amie McPherson.. Kathryn kulhman and more. They ONLY depended on God..did not move a toe nail until God spoke. We need those type back!
The great Mahalia Jackson. I remember hearing her voice as a small child in the early 70s when my grandmother would listen to her before church. Wow. Brings back good memories.
My mom had the "Bless This House" album on which Mahalia recorded this song, and while my friends thought Frankie Avalon and Fabian were the hottest things in music, I was rockin; out to this and to other great Black singers like Dinah Washington. I love the way Mahalia dressed for appearances like this -- nothing fancy, just a simple dress any Black woman who could afford one would wear to a Sunday church service. And her voice is literally incomparable. This is the REAL rock 'n' roll -- not the music of the devil but the music of the Lord!

AMEN, I was born and raised in St.Louis, with deep, deep roots in Southwest Louisiana. And this SAINT of a Woman is a splitting image of my Gran Mama. She knew that were on a threshold of something very just and great for all of America and the World 🌎🌍. Rest in Heaven Saints and I will never forget about you all and I am blessed for the short time I had with you on Earth.🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yeah she was about 5' 7.5" at the age of 14 based on what Laurraine Goreau shared in, "Just Mahalia, Baby". So it seems like she was a woman that made you stop and take notice. Tall, full-figured, smooth dark complexion, handsome, radiant smile, with those lovely mixed African and Native American features. BEAUTIFUL inside and out.
Moi qui suis athée je suis pris de vibrations et d'émotions difficiles à expliquer quand j'entends Mahalia Jackson entonner ce vieux chant anglo - saxon.. qui nous rend l'espoir en la vie ..!
Powerful singing. I have been listening to her since I was a little girl. I love, love this lady. Watch "Come on Children let's sing" in Berlin - what a performance - the greatest singer I have ever heard -- very sincere
All the current singers(rihanna, lady gaga and whatever they call themselves) can pack their things and leave. Cause this is not just another level. That comes from a whole different universe.
Yes, Thank You GOD for allowing me to awaken this glorious, beautiful morning. For a roof over my head, food to eat, clothing and most of all breathing life into me.I rebuke the evil one and it's imps. Please GOD, keep telling me what to do, to watch over me and keep me on the right track.AMEN.🙏🏽🌅😇.
Many, MANY years ago, there was a show called Jubilee Showcase. This show came on Sundays and featured gospel. Norfleet Brothers were always on and Mahalia would be on there almost every Sunday. The show was hosted by Sid Ordower, straight outta Chicago. His son was working on a documentary about the show and his father.
She was performing for pennies on the dollar and sometimes her gowns carried the cost of a full week of shows. She couldn’t have the charitable heart without being a good steward over what little finances she was offered.
@@mrakennedy I guess you didn’t know that by the end of her career Mahalia’s appearances were upwards of $10,000 a session. She did not die a pauper. Mahalia was just frugal. She spent more on others than on herself. She was recorded in an interview saying, “...all you can wear is one dress at a time...” so I don’t get the impression she was caught up on clothes and style. Her focus was blessing others in song and spreading the gospel all around.

Woah! Now that lady could sing. We don't get talent like this these days. And this is coming from someone born in the 1990's.

Go to any black church
So am I. The early 90s.
En la Congregación tenemos morenos que cantan con esa unción.
Es que hay que cantar con el alma, para que el poder del Señor, se manifieste.
You can feel the old time Christian Church in this lady, the persecution church of those who become strong and strong in God's love.
What I love about this is that most of these kids weren't even born when her career started, yet she has even them in a trance...
