I think the Alchemist thrives when you play as an unhinged chaos goblin. While others research tomes or consult with divinity, you mix together some weird crap you left out overnight and achieve the same result, that’s hilarious. You can cast Haste, you just know that’s your guy injecting a teammate with something. You can be an unhinged support and I love that

I literally am playing with this character at my friend's table.
She originally didn't even had a name, she was The Goblin and she's the kind of character that likes F'd up stuff but don't like what'd be normal (like, she loves sewer smell but dislikes flowers')

For me I actually added one of elder scrolls features to my character for flavor. Instead of my character doing alchemical experimentation to find the recipes. He’s just a dwarf who uses his natural fortitude to munch down on every ingredient he finds to discover how to make potions. It’s really fun getting to describe the disgusting mash/paste that I make in mortar and pestle before chowing down in the middle of the night.

Okay, but peace cleric + alchemist is legit. +3d4 to saves will trivialize a lot of encounters, and the ability to get +20ft of moment from potions and spells early on makes their Channel Divinity even more effective.

The Alchemist does feel a bit underwhelming on its own, but I've found 2 builds that make great use of it:
    1. Add 2+ levels of Barbarian so you can blow your spell slots on elixirs, then chug, rage, and go nuts with your non-concentration effects.
    2. Mix in Mutant Bloodhunter (if your table allows it) to be the ultimate mad scientist and scoop up weapon and armor proficiency.

One of my current characters is an Alchemist. Is it the strongest or "best" Artificer subclass? No. Not by a long shot. But I like it, and it gave me a reason to take Acid Splash for once.
We homebrewed the Elixirs so that once you'd rolled one of everything on their tavle, you could choose which ones to make at all times. We also made it so you can enhance your elixirs with the spell slot you would've used to create it in the first place. Also, having a number of elixirs equal to half your proficiency bonus rounded up gets the ball rolling a little quicker.

I have two ideas as to how you can improve the alchemist with multiclassing
    1) the mad scientist. You multiclass into sorcerer. Even if metamagic doesn't affect potions, the description says you can expand one spell slot to get them back. And the sorcerer has a lot of spell slots with not enough spells to use them with
    2) the steroid user. Multiclass into a barbarian. You can't cast spells when you rage but you can drink potions. So you basically just convert all your spells into potions and use them while in rage. Especially the ones that give you extra ac or extra speed

Yay finally the one I've been voting for. I've always thought a cool fix for the Alchemist is to expand and give extra uses of their create magic item exclusively to make potions. Limit it by saying each potion only lasts till the end of a long rest and by having a level prerequisite to make potions of certain rarities.

  • @AtelierGod
    @AtelierGod 22 дня назад +1

6:53 One little thing, since production of items is measured in how much money is used (base 25GP) per 8 hour work day, a ability that halves the time and quarters the cost actually interacts with each other to make a crafting time 1/8 of what it was for uncommon or common magic items essential making mass production easy.

An EXTREMELY common misunderstanding but spell storing item is limited to the Artificer's (class) spell list, not an Artificer spell you can cast (class+subclass) that has a one Action cast time.
I've seen people try and put Shield or Absorb Elements in there lol, but some DMs are cool with it.
The spell you put in is at its lowest level.
Putting in Continual Flame in it bypasses the material component, as it produces the spells effect instead of casting the spell.

I have a build only thing you need from dm is an all purpose tool and it’s doable without one.
1-4: play back line, open combat up shoving a potion down the damage dealer’s throat. Throw cantrips also pick up the alchemist jug infusion and start making vials of acid, your not going to need them to later but yeah.
    5-8
Now you want your all purpose tool to use Sheligh
Open combat casting flaming sphere and bonus action sheligh
Round two booming blade a target and put your flaming sphere on them. You’re gonna want the mobile feat with this combo.
    9-10
Your going to want to switch the ALL PURPOSE cantrip to acid splash
    Cast tiny servant that morning.
First round of combat bonus action haste and cast firebolt, raw you should be able to all purpose acid splash And give your tiny servant a standing order to throw a vial of acid at whatever your attacking.
    11-12
Same as 9-10 except you get a familiar and have them cast acid arrow with the spell storing item
    13-16
Take summon construct and take the metal one.
In combat: cast summon construct, bonus action sheligh, your construct attacks, you could switch your standing orders on your servant to attack the same target as the construct to get it to attack round, and your familiar attacks
Round two you cast booming blade on somebody and if you don’t like that you just make your servant attack round one and cast fire bolt round two
    17-20
Swapout construct with arcane hand for more versatility and less flavor

      • Blight is always fun
      • Cloud Kill combos well with tiny servant and you can give the whole party familiar bats so it’s not a problem

Personally I'd remove the randomness of the potion and also have something in there that you can take a potion and mix it with something and toss it to do something harmful and random freeze, restrain, etc.
This way you have to make choices what prepped potions you willing to sacrifice for the sake of combat and still have that chaotic element that people enjoy when thinking of mixing up potions. Essentially giving them all dual purposes.

    @ericpeterson8732 22 дня назад

I think D&D daily had a cool Alchemist build. Alchemists are the only artificers that can get both booming blade (artificer cantrip) and flaming sphere. If you use your infusions on defense, you can cast flaming sphere right behind your opponent, then move up and cast booming blade. If they stay, fire damage. If they move, thunder damage. A bit niche, but surprisingly effective. Since alchemists dont get extra attack, making the most of your one attack is important.

    Some Alchemist tips n tricks
Use Haste and/or Homunculus to administer Elixirs across the battlefield.
    FaerieFire(SpellStoringItem+Creature) + Bless Elixir + Bless(FeyTouched,or Cleric/Paladin party member)
Means you and your allies aren't gonna miss and have a better chance of landing Crits and avoiding Nat 1s.
Alter Self Elixir + Longtooth Shifter (+FaerieFire for Accuracy)
Gives you effectively two +1 attacks, Action/BonusAction.
It gets better once you can make the Gauntlets of Ogre Power or Belt of Hill Giant Strength.
    Alchemy Jug(Focus) + Spell Storing item(Cure Wounds)
Acts like a potion dispenser and is cool. Also it saves spell slots.

  • @108chronos

Largely agree, but you *can* in fact create an Experimental Elixir of your choice from the table with a level 1 spell slot, the random ones are just the freebies you get per long rest. But yeah, I agree that the subclass unfortunately leaves much to be desired. I strongly feel that the elixirs should scale a hefty amount since its competition is IRON MAN, ROBOT TANK, AND GUN. Also the class is half caster, so it'll always lose out in potential to full casters without some sizeable buffs if it's trying to specialize in something that a full caster could easily replicate without the need to specialize. Overall I love the Alchemist, I just wish it got more love on the cutting room floor.

  • @Kit.Fisto.
    @Kit.Fisto. 13 дней назад

I thought you could create extra elixirs after a rest using spells slots, but using the random table of course. I think that it is in Tasha’s cauldron of everything where it says that. Read through it last night while creating an artificer, but I may have misread.

Alchemy also includes transmutation of materials or changing the composition of certain objects or elements.
Why restrict us to just random potion maker?

Because that’s the transmutation wizards job.

@@AtelierGod but there are other ways you could go about depicting it then.
Have it be a setup incantation that requires materials to improve a base substance. Hell, these new substances could provide unique effects for items.
There are options to do more and do them better. It just takes a second or two of thinking.

I wish Alchemist was better. I only played it once and it was cause I didn't wanna play a Cleric but we needed a healer. But then 2 clerics joined and 1 was a life domain so I was entirely pointless.
And the DM was...weird about it. He had a house rule that his Artificers can make crazy stuff like nukes and missiles. So I thought, "Oh cool, so my guy can make like grenades in the DMG? I could probably be like a Grenadier to compensate for my limited damage output."
"Sure... just tell me how it's made." Eh...what? "Yeah, if you want pipe bombs, you, the player should know exactly how to make one." I pointed out I can't make that stuff irl...I can make a gun and bullets irl but I dunno how to make bombs. Why should I have to know? I dunno how to make medicine, but my guy does.

Honestly, the Alchemist is such a flavor fail imo. When you think of an alchemist, you think of someone who cannot only buff but debuff as well with poisons, explosives, etc. I feel like Experimental Elixir should have expanded out to creating bombs and the like as well
