- Welcome to Crimson Guitars www.youtube.co...
In this old episode from February 2018, Ben visits a local wood supplier where he gets very excited about choosing the piece of timber for his latest insane guitar design, the 90 Hour Build. The result of a dream.
Crimson tries as much as possible to source everything locally.

I live in the U.S. and have a friend that salvages wood including different kinds of whole trees. Some of the grain he finds after the cuts are made, its just stunning.
Sounds like BEST friend material to me! B
This was really nice to see how some of the other aspects of your work are done. Also, as I'm just airing my flat, and it's really cold for late August, it made me feel like I was almost there. Just a cup o' tea on the old porch,, warpped in a blanket and wooly hat, watching the cows.... aaah yes.
" I need to find the specific gravity of sycamore ". Who doesn't say that a couple times a day?
LMFAO
so strange to see that you're driving on the wrong side :-D
I was worried Ben was ill, before seeing it's 3 years old!
i was like "GET ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD!!!", but then realization struck me
Great looking forward to the 900 hour build
More like the over 9000 hour build
Back in the days when we used to shake hands when we met someone new...
I hear people saying that oak is very heavy, and yet we also use rosewood, ebony, wenge, bubinga, purple heart... all species that are more dense than oak.
EDIT: I just did a Google. English oak has a specific gravity of 0.73, same as hard maple.
I don't know what the units of specific gravity are, presumably board ft per metric weekend.
I'd like to see more videos on how to source wood in smaller volumes for diy use, especially with limited capacity to transport, e.g. supermini type car.
Honestly - talk to people. Phone around to local furniture makers etc. See where they get wood. Go to woodworking forums. There are good UK ones that detail lots of timber merchants…small and large.
I’m digging the Austin powers music
I love that the guy selling the wood starts asking Ben questions about timber once he cottons on to how knowledgeable he actually is. As Ben often says: #alwaysbelearning
Should have taken the meter and used it at the supplier, not wait till the wood is delivered!
fair point, we do do that, but on this occasion were a little scatter-brained! B
Emile Hirsch is working for you!
After the last year and a half it was kinda weird to see them go to a mill and not wear a face mask. Took me a moment to remember this was pre covid 🤣
If you believe the propaganda hide under your rock and wear you face knickers. If not get on with life
@@bryanbuckley4312 get on with life indeed. stop trying to interfere with others' lives. you have no right to tell anyone how to live.
@@gramursowanfaborden5820 I'm not telling anyone how to live. No compromised government is going to tell me how to live either for the kick backs they are getting from phizer and their pals. But this is not the place for this discussion. Just wish I access to a good wood supplier near me rather than buying over priced blanks on line. No offence to Ben obviously
This is the first time I've ever had a FPV from inside of a UK car. It looks sooo weird with Ben driving on the right side and in the left lane (most of the time). LOL
It looked very weird. I felt like I was in the back seat! And Ben drives too fast!!!
It footage was sped up and Ben wasn't driving! But many of our staff do drive too fast!! DC
Looks a bit like the Isle of man TT.
My bad, I see Ben was driving. Sorry! DC
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars I was wondering....
LOL
I know I clearly saw Ben driving, but since you said he wasn't driving, and since it was in fast-motion, I thought it may have been editing trickery. LOL
After you said that Ben wasn't driving, I was going to tell you to look again, but I figured you knew what you were talking about, and I didn't want to make a fool of myself! LOL
Anyway, thanks for confirming! I can stop feeling so confused right now!!! LOL 🤣🤣🤣
Just saying that It would freak me out to have to drive over where you are located. I am legally Blind in my left eye even though I can see out of it. Long story Won't bore everyone but long story short because of just having full use of only one eye it plays havoc with my depth perception and I do not do well on narrow roads and streets. Add to that and having to drive on the wrong side of the road from what I am used to well in short order I would be a nervous wreck.
What about larch timber? For a soft wood it's pretty substantial. I have 15 meters of 25mm x 350mm+ waney edge left over from a job i did years ago. A lot of it is straight grained. It's dense heavy stuff but quite resinous so not sure if I could trust it for a neck.
I agree.. not good for a neck, but could do a cool.body or twenty! Soft woods don't keep a well sanded finish for long without denting unless you go crazy with the finish.. or use shu sugi ban perhaps..
FIRST!... ... ... I know it comes with experience, but I always find it hard to see through the saw marks.
Do you have a whip to go with the fedora, Indiana Crowe?
Ben, Thanks for the road trip! It's cool to see what your area is like. Around here I'd be going to a modern warehouse building, just off the highway. I like yours much better! I missed the owner's name, but he seemed really cool. Some really beautiful wood for you all to make beautiful guitars!
Did James walk, or was he pushed. You have hinted in other videos, that you were less than happy with his performance...
The more pressing question is, what happened to Christopher? Did I miss something or why is he gone?
@@GroovingDrums yeah….good question. I hadn’t realised about Christopher, or picked up on James.
@@GroovingDrums They mentioned in one of the first Live Streams in a writen answer, that James left on good terms and wanted to do new stuff. Christopher went back to the US also, as they said on good terms, there are some speculations its due to Brexit.
But I think we will never really know.
James accepted a job offer from April Wilkerson. We have no further information. DC
He doesn't seem to have a lot of stock. Is that specifically because he's a small operation or it that typical for the UK?
I just can't get over how narrow the streets and country roads there are. beautiful countryside though.
I love it here, took a while to get used to the roads for sure.. but it is lovely! B
Hi Ben, liked the choosing wood compilation. Can ask if drift wood could be used to make a guitar? I have a 2 seater driftwood bench that is took 2 men struggling to lift itand carry it into my garden having to rest a couple of times. I need to recycle it so I plan to dismantle it and build something creative with the wood, then I thought of the bgbc in 2022 and maybe make one out of the wood. What do you think?
I think it really could be.. it does depend on the actual wood in ever case but at the very least you should be able to build the body, or a body or two for that matter! B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars
Thanks that makes sense. I got in touch with the people who made the bench and they recon it was driftwood came from somewhere tropical. Anywho, I am going to take it apart in the next few weeks so if you don't mind can I send you an image?
I am 66 in October so I am going to make a start building my guitar on my birthday so by the time the next build off comes around I will at least have hopefully made my mistakes by then. I love the channel and you have inspired me to pick up the tools again and start making stuff.
Cheers, J (John)
Perhaps you should make him an offer for his barn doors...They looked like they had a nice patina 😂
The thought has crossed my mind! No old wooden buildings are safe! B
Ben it was nice to see James. I thought he was gone from Crimson, Beautiful timber💪💪💪👏👏👏🎸🎹🎼👨🏻🦯👨🏻🦯
He has. This video was made some time ago - pre-covid. We upload various old footage we think folk may have missed! DC
I wish he could have turned that bloody machine off the buzzing noise drove me mad!
THE UNDERTAKER! Sorry, Sorry, I Need to write It!
That blokes sounds like he went to school with Prince William lol
Good video , I like this kind of content :)
Thank you. More will come. B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars My man!😉
Finish nebula 2 already. Jesus.
Entitled much?
Might want to retrieve your toys that were ejected from your pram... This was filmed years ago., it's not taking time away from the build.
Does he deliver to Nova Scotia? lol
Ben, you do not look well. Hopefully it's nothing serious. Great selection of wood.
This was a fee years ago.. and at the time of filming there was a hell of a lot going on that was seriously impacting my mental and physical health.. I feel so so much better now! Thank you for noticing! B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars So glad to hear that.
Is James still at Crimson?
No. DC
He had an offer he couldn't refuse ;) B
@@CrimsonCustomGuitarsIt must have been some offer to leave the World famous Crimson, and in turn the mighty, the one and only, the master of disaster, simply the best, Mr Benjamin King Crowe. 😮😁
You are too kind.. but yes a great offer and it was actually a really good thing for all concerned in the end. B
Loved this segment!!! But, I would not get into a car with You, You drive way too fast...! Take Care...
The footage was speeded up as the speed limit is 30 MPH in built-up areas. DC
Whatever happened to James it seemed to me he got married then you fattened him up then he completely disappeared. Did Crimson have a big insurance policy on him?
He quit. I'd like to know what happened to Christopher after he quit. I had a feeling he would as he wanted to build guitars, not be a teacher.
Last I saw of James, he was working for April Wilkerson in her new place in Texas.
@@mykhough6614 he’s become an American good riddance
