  • A feared left-handed slugger, Eddie Mathews became the seventh player in Major League history to hit 500 home runs, finishing his career with 512. He walloped more than 30 round-trippers nine years in a row. In 1953, his 47 homers for the Milwaukee Braves led the National League and established a single-season record for third basemen that lasted 27 years. A member of two world championship teams, Mathews was the first athlete featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

When dynamic duos are discussed often times Aaron and mathews get overlooked
But these 2 guys in my opinion rival Ruth and gehrig as a one two punch
I just looked up the combined stats and longevity and these guys were unbelievable

More than anything else Eddie Mathews was a Brave. In Boston, in Milwaukee, and in Atlanta; the only Major Leauger to play for the club in each city. Mathews was 2 years established as a slugging 3rd Baseman when Henry Aaron arrived in 1954. Their partnership in the Braves lineup became the prolific in Baseball History with a combined 863 Home Runs; more than Ruth and Gehrig or Mays and McCovey.

On this day in 1954 {August 16th} the first issue of the sports magazine 'Sports Illustrated' hit the newsstands across the U.S.A.
The first cover had future Hall of Famer Eddie Matthews at the plate in Milwaukee County Stadium {the catcher was the N.Y. Giant's Wes Westrum}...
It was Mr. Matthews 3rd year in the majors, for the year hit batted .290 with 40 homers and 103 RBIs...
    R.I.P. Mr. Matthews {1931 - 2001} and Mr. Westrum {1922 - 2002}...

They had a lot of great players on the Milwaukee Braves team, but were overshadowed by Aaron and Mathews. Spahn, Burdette and Buhl were an extremely consistent and powerful group of pitchers, Del Crandall was top notch, then there's Red Schoendienst and Johnny Logan ... and Wes Covington and Billy Bruton and on and on.

Ralph Kiner did not hold the rookie HR record with his 23 8n 1946. Wally Berger held the National League record with 38 in 1930 and Al Rosen had hit 37 in 1950 for the American League record. Mathews hit 25 as a rookie in 1952 but far from the rookie records.

It was a little strange to hear that type of error in the video. Maybe what the announcer intended to say is that Mathews set a rookie record by becoming the first rookie to hit 3 HR's in a game. Ralph Kiner did the 3 HRs/game several times, but not in his rookie year.
