  • I hate these things about bullet journal 😝 Hate is a strong word, really it's probably more "dislike about bullet journaling" but still 😂 Today we're looking at 7 of the things I don't like about bullet journaling. While there's lots of love about the system, we're taking some time to feel our feelings and be a little salty 🧂

Made a rule for my bujo: No rulers, no white out and if i make a mistake i write lol and more on. It really forced me to get over my perfectionism./ I think Ryder Carroll adjusted the way he did weeklys after the popularity of the bujo community so even the creator adapts over time./ I think ppl say its flexible to ppl who are struggling to change their set ups bc they arent being flexible/adaptable./
I don't like how alot of the creative bullet journalers on youtube dont say more about the ryder carroll method which i think leads to ton of ppl trying bujo then leaving saying things like "I dont have the time"
Also i used to say buju lol... for some reason my phone cant autocorrecting to that.

ANOTHER THING is that saying you don't have time or creativity for the bullet journal can feed into gatekeeping of minimal journals not being a "real" bujo. Like do they think that every bullet journaller needs to spend three hours on a single spread, and repeat that every day with all of them being objectively amazing!? Especially from the start!

I love that so many people have fun and enjoy their creative design with art, drawing, stickers, coloring, etc... I am also satisfied with my own BuJo because it is my place to create a notebook that works for my individual needs without an implicit structure like a Franklin Covey planner. I try not to stress out too much with imperfections like misspellings of words or a line out of place. A good reminder that I'm not a robot. LoL.

"We don't get to decide what productivity looks like for other people"...couldn't agree more. Your bullet journal is your personal space. Whether you share your journal or not, it's for you to decide how the system works for you and what you choose to include, omit or change. Even Ryder Carroll has adapted his monthly log and changed its use from his original conception. Really liked the points you raised. I'm still in my first year of bullet journaling (not a fan of the term 'bujo' 😁) but love how much I've learned about myself throughout the process and love the spirit of the bullet journal community. 💜

It takes time and a few books to find what works for you. I've tried various trackers, headers, block style versus free-flow, stickers, washi tape, mildliners, and don't even get me started on brush lettering! After looking through my old books, I've come to terms with the BuJo: Do whatever the fuck you want. Theme, free-flow, rigid blocks, colourful or B&W, all in the same week if you like. Who cares, it's YOUR journal., Trash it up, muck around, washi to your hearts content, colour, draw, leave blank, use headers one week, dot-markers the next. Diary, journal secrets, password collections, to-do lists, school, work, home life, whatever the hell you want. You can BuJo in a field notes notebook, a scribbler, or spend some UNGODLY amount of money on a fancy hardcover notebook. Most of all: Have fun with it!

Yeah I got burnt out so hard on bullet journaling and I'm just NOW finally getting back to it, albeit in a really free-form manner as I have ADHD and need to find a way that I both remember to write in it, but also don't overfixate, get anxiety, and drop it completely again.
All because I felt like I wasn't doing it "correctly" cause everyone around me was making it so Perfect and pretty and I'm like dude, I just wannt write some shit in a book and put some cute stickers in there, I shouldn't make myself do more than that.

  • @susiebolt4021

I hate the seemingly endless quest for the "perfect" notebook. There's always something: the dots don't line up, the paper isn't white enough or ghosts too much, there's no pen loop, the cover color options are black or black, there's too much margin...and so on.
Also, there's never an even number of dots for both dimensions, so I can't perfectly divide the page. Ugh.

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  2 года назад +1

Ooo the page division stuff is a tricky one! I really liked the Dingbats for the 28 boxes across that you could get a nice even 4 columns with, haha 😝

Love the salt and sass. One of the things I don't like is when people say if you aren't using your bujo for everything, you are doing it wrong. Excuse me....it's my damn bujo. If I only want to keep track of a few things and use an ECLP for other things, then why the hell not. One of my bujo's helps me keep track of goals, habits and my work schedule. My other bujo is my reading journal. Each has its own purpose and serves me well.

Drives me batty when people assume that a dot grid is what makes it a bullet journal! And that the name derives from that. It's like, do you not see the bullet points you are using as signifiers? Do you think they might be relevant to the process and the name somehow???

OMG, that was so funny! Love your sarcasm! I sat there giggling hysterically. 🤣
What I don't like is close to your No. 4 (the "BuJo police") - "you're not bullet journalling if you use a BuJo and a planner". Like, what?! Isn't writing appointments in a planner just a different form of Future Log? I'd forget most of my appointments if I didn't have a weekly overview - like, I simply forgot to look at any previous Future Logs I set up. It's a matter of what serves you best, after all. Besides, bullet journalling is a method, first and foremost, not a physical object...

Confession time. I hate the word bujo. I think it sounds yucky. I can type it out but I will always say bullet journal or just journal. I can't bring myself to say bujo without cringing. Hearing you explain it and sounding out "boo-llet" gave me the giggles though!
I also have an issue when people say they don't have the time for journaling. I'm fine with it if it's not someone's vibe but if they say it like it's a time waste then I get mad. It's a form of self-care I think so I make time for it. Not to mention that bullet journaling helps me with task and time management so I kinda have to make the time if I want to be productive 😅

I buy a minimalism art graph deluxe bound book that has 234 pages and I completely create a do-it-yourself planner with two page weekly spreads that are empty and can be used however I want to but everything else is filled out. I also create collections in the back which are my projects and I have areas for quarterly goals and reviews and monthly goals and reviews. I don't call it bullet journaling I called creating a do-it-yourself planner. But I create the whole year at once because I like being able to turn the page and see a future month and make a note on it. I have never found a planner made by someone that had the setup that works for me. So I make my own. It's taking me years of using a bullet journal in a bullet journal style to realize that I'm better with my own created planner. It's also taking me a couple years to find a planner layout of my own creation that is as good as it is today and I'm guessing it will be better in a couple years. I am not artistic I don't use stickers I don't use washi tape I don't use any markers. I use a different colored ballpoint pens and I add a line of colored pencil across the top of each page of a given month. I like the color but I don't want to start buying stickers and washi tape because I will fall into a deep hole and spend money I can't really afford. So I will watch playing with me videos and get the enjoyment of seeing other people do Doodles and use stickers and washi tape. And I will feel my do-it-yourself planner out on a daily basis with my ballpoint pen and enjoy the creative process of designing the layout.

100% on your 4th point! I re-started BuJo'ing again last month after almost a year of not doing it at all (and then I had been doing it for like two months). I was just so overwhelmed with what other people did, and I was so dissatisfied with my terrible star doodles (grrr). Now i restarted, I use stamps, only use two pens (black and blue) and allow a few stickers here and there. WAY better, I'm happy to pick it up, it's fun to come up with minimal themes, etc. Maybe in a year or so I'll start going big with themes, but rn I'm happy as it is.
Also your bonus point has me a bit upset. I'm shouting at my very cheap Journal every time the grid doesn't align, and I kinda expected it to be better with more expensive ones, hmmm... but, i guess it can't be helped 🤷‍♀

Feel like I need vinegar and chips with the saltiness lol Have to agree with all your points, the dots not lining up is a particular hatred of mine. I know my aesthetic and it's torn paper, typewriter font alphabet stamps (that I never get straight) and black or gray pens with the odd splash of dark washi tape - I play to my strengths, i'm not a colourful arty person so I don't go that way but I'd never dream of saying "I can't do this as I'm not artistic" they're my spreads for my eyes and I love them! Think I kinda went off topic there lol Great video as always Jess. Jxx

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! 😂 I'm SO in agreement with your comment about it feeding your perfectionist tendancies in a negative way. That is exactly what has held and still does hold me up from getting properly (i.e. more than half-way ) through each month in my journals.
Also, imma put it out into the World here and now that about 90% of my spreads are shamelessly stolen from YOU! If I was ever going to let anyone see my journal of course I'd totally fess up and say who I'd copied the ideas from, and if I ever get brave enough to post any pics on IG I'll probably just make a new account called "Jess made me do it!" and link back to your social medias 🤗 Having dipped in and out of several RUclipsrs videos that journal, I just kept coming back to yours so it was inevitable really!
On that note, please don't patent or copyright "That's future Me's problem" though because I can be heard to say that multiple times a day and I'd be bankrupt in a week from the royalties! 😱😁
I'm relieved that the music you play in the background is free for this very reason as I hum it for a good hour after watching at least! Lol! x

Seeing how Ryder spoke about how people have twisted the actual bullet journaling system, making it harder for people who want to try it out, to understand - I somewhat get people who say, "It ain't a bullet journal" if (not the nasty ones, but those who respectfully justify their statements). Personally, I dislike how some bullet journaling influencers have contorted the system and made it unattainable for a lot of people. However, I do not dislike their work; it's very beautiful. I just think that the word "creative" must always be put before "bullet journal" for certain creators. There needs to be an explicit distinction between bullet journalingand creative bullet journaling.

    • @JashiiCorrin
      @JashiiCorrin  2 года назад +1

Good perspective! I think it’s hard to put in that explicit distinction because where would that line actually get drawn? How much/little decoration does one have to include for it to be considered one or the other 🤔 I just think more needs to be done to let our new-to-the-system peeps know that you can have any range or decoration you want, but the bullet journal system is more about the productive process, if that makes sense 😂😝

I’m currently using a regular planner, but I’m getting board with it again. BTW, you can help with growing pains by making sure you get enough potassium. Love your videos, as always, thanks for feeding my creative brain!

I enjoyed this video so much & your hair 🥰 The thing that gets me so mad (there are a few), is that you have to be perfect, their shouldn’t be mistakes on you pages especially if you are putting them on IG or FB. First off I am human, and I make mistakes, and my pen smudges all over, get over it. Tomorrow I will use another pen. The second thing is consistency, we are busy, sometimes I forget a habit here or a day there, and it’s completely fine. I put a sticker on a empty block and a piece of washi, everything doesn’t have to be filled on or written in. Thirdly, supplies, I save money to buy things I like, just like everybody else, I happen to like pens, and markers and washi tapes, I am not an addict, I am a collector, so what if I display them in a foto, stop shaming people for having things, or using only xxx brand and so on. Finally, for all these things I just think that people should be kind to others, especially on social media, on the other end is a real person with real feelings, who spent their time and money doing something they love, let us be.
Thank you for reading this rant. Have a blessed day

Also, not necessarily about Bullet Journalling itself, but can we please a knowledge the fact that many pens labeled as “Black” are usually an awkward shade of dark grey or purple?!? This just makes me angry ngl. Also, does this happen to anyone else who does custom journals that the ones for friends, family, or customers always look better than your own monthly setup? Idk why but for me that has become a FACT now.

I think my favourite quote from your video is "we don't get to decide how productivity looks for other people" - there is so much truth in this, not just when it comes to bullet journaling!
The gate-keeping was the main reason why I kept trying to bullet journal and then gave up pretty quickly over and over again. I took it up agin at the end of last year (mainly inspired by your super practical videos >3) and now it seems to stick. The main thing I learnt is that a super minimal, messy style is the one that suits me best. I also learnt that a small planner plus a small notebook work best for me day-to-day and fits into my handbag. I keep a separate A5 notebook for lists, trackers etc. Looking forward to filling the current one so I can try out A&O ;)

The thing I dislike about bullet journaling is the thing that keeps me using it. I hate setting up spreads. But the need to set up a spread in order for me to use it keeps me using it. Otherwise, I would forget about it like I have every other planner I’ve used in my life. I have recently found a compromise in an A&O traveler’s size notebook. I don’t need a lot of planning space to begin with, so I can quickly set up what I need as I need it. So it make the process less unlikable.

Omg yes! I love your sass so much, Jess. I completely relate (and made sounds when you did about the uneven dots lolol). I've never encountered anyone misspelling BuJo before... I am scared lol The wrong pronunciation or definitions get me as a teacher too, like... "PIN number". I'm guilty of it too, but aaahh lol! Omg the dots not lining up probably gets me the most. Even the most "luxury" brands can't get away from that, I guess XD
I do like how *versatile* the system is (hehe synonyms), so it can change when I change. I can't sit at my desk for a long time anymore, so setup time and journaling in the notebook have gone down the drain. Sadface.
Incidentally, my writing group host asked me to give a presentation on Bullet Journaling later this month (panic). You cover exactly what I'm trying to express: that it's accessible for everyone, it doesn't have to break the bank with stationery hauls and fancy artwork, it makes life and tasks easier when it's written down (cuz everyone has them), and you don't have to do what other people do, cuz it'll be unique to your life and needs.
I see a lot of negative videos of people saying they tried it and it didn't work and now they just smash the system. Then change it?? The younger kids give up so easily nowadays, and there's really nothing to get them to keep going (except negative energy lol?) even if things seem to fail..
"Both productive and creative" Yes. That's what art jobs do, too XD And when you finish a spread or illustration you like, you should take in the moment and be proud of what you made!

My only major peeve with Bullet Journaling is when you get to those pages in the binding, where 2 signatures' last and first pages meet, and the glue has seeped in deep enough that the pages are basically partially stuck together. Sometimes it's minimal and you lose only like an infinitesimal amount of space. But now and then, you come to a set of pages that are SO stuck together that you lose up to 3 squares of space!!! UGH! And then you either have to just glue them together entirely, OR try to carefully- c a r e f u l l y- pull them apart enough to be usable. Hate that. And regardless of the journal quality or maker, now and then, I get one with those pages, and even rarer MULTIPLE!! Can't stand this in an otherwise wonderful hobby.

    • @JashiiCorrin

#3 I hear every time I mention it to people. Because of the ubiquity of the artistic and IG candy style journaling, many are put off from it thinking that to journal correctly, you need mountains of colored markers, stickers, paint sets, rulers, stamps and everything else. Then you have to put in hours to get it looking just right. They are shocked to hear that journaling is basically just making bulletized lists to help you get things done. While some like making their journal into an art project, others do not. Neither of them are wrong, but I do wish that there was a good deal more content that was at different levels of journaling. Original, Doodles, Kinda fancy, "okay I spend a ton of time on it" and "I have an entire house just for my supplies", as well as everything in between.
Journal to make yourself productive. If making artistic spreads with markers and what not makes you happy, do that too. The real shocker is that you don't even have to follow the bullet journaling method to make yourself more productive. Take some from column A, B all the way through Z if you need to and make your own system. And watch Jashii all the time, of course.

I would def say i don't have time but that's because I also don't feel like I have anything worth tracking. I would make the time if I thought it would be helpful for me. Like for me, washing my face or brushing my teeth isn't really worth tracking and my todo list is usually 1 or 2 things a week, so I feel so guilty making a whole page and not doing anything with it. So I guess I hate that I don't have enough to do to spend time making a bujo!!! :D Also, i did do a bunch trackers and things and just kept forgetting to fill them out. And then it made me feel guilty.
But I love watching people make bujo spreads - seeing how they can basically take a to-do list and create art out of it!

I hate sometimes how open ended it is to bullet journal. Like me personally, I complete my spreads for the next week on thursdays because thats when I have the most energy and time usually. But I change my layouts every week because I haven't found an end all be all system of information. It challenges my organizational skills for sure and my creativity but sometimes I dont have the energy to do everything I did the previous week that worked.
I also hate how indecisive I can be with spreads, speaking specifically on monthlies and cover pages. My april set up I did the cover page twice I think because I was just so unhappy with it. I generally just pick an idea that ive developed over the month and try to sketch it out but as soon as it gets to color I hate and have to start over. Quotes are another thing I really enjoy but I have a hard time picking.
I dunno. There's a lot I like about the system, and it certainly helps me stay organized and centered in my life. It's just that I get easily frustrated and want to start over so out the pages come lol.

I think the only point that I might disagree with was the first one. Considering the numbers of bujo enthusiasts that have treated such problems with bullet journaling is pretty high.
Comparison syndrome is how I describe it to friends who ask questions, because it covers several of your points actually. Constantly comparing everything just eats through your time worse than being afraid to put pen to paper.

Oh my, I’m new to your channel and this video was a hoot!!! I was on another channel talking about BuJo journal paper weight and I happen to express my love for heavier paper weights and the possibility that the original bullet journal could come ( in addition to the lighter paper weight) a heavier paper weight as well. And, you would have thought I suggested pulling wings off butterflies 🤣 I was told that “they didn’t need some BuJo fan girl coming in and taking over their journals and journaling!!!” I was like…A) I’m 63 years old, so try to get to know me before you pop off and…B) “No one is talking about taking over anything!” Good Gravy, we can’t suggest any additions to our little worlds ??? Are we really now fighting over the weight of paper???!!!🫣 I think that should not even make the fight list EVER🤣🤣🤣 That’s what I don’t like about Bullet Journaling! Thanks for a fun video and letting me get that off my chest…I feel so much better 👏🏽🙏🏽🥰

Haha most welcome! I prefer a thicker paper, and appreciate that we have such variety in notebooks that (in theory) there's a type out there for everyone 😊💜💪 Ain't gonna go fight someone over gsm though 😂
