Funnily enough, it's the other way around: UN Squadron wqs based on the Manga Area 88, illustrated and written by Kaoru Shintani. It ran from 1979-1986 in Japan, with the OVAs coming out in 1985 and 1986. The TV series with CG animation ran from 2004-2006. If I remember right UN Squadron hit arcades sometime in 1988-1989, then was later ported over to the NES or SNES in the early 90s
