They totally different. Dry leaf is more for breaking stances and Danes are for doing dps cuz the fast attacks and the ash of war most people use on that.
One thing I have been having fun with is the deflecting tear + either of the dryleaf weapons. For some reason the guard counter on dryleaf does crazy high damage and is decently fast. I have reached upwards of 3.5k in the dlc on a quality build.

I had a similar thought on the dryleaf vs Danes but I find that because the shattered stone talisman works with the normal moveset. In my opinion, this makes up for the slightly slower attack speed of Dane’s. It also means that the light attacks aren’t quite as useless as they do decent enough damage and usually has enough recovery to allow me to dodge some bosses faster attacks. they are both great weapons, and the choice in my opinion is purely preference. Dane’s is better for aggressive players and dryleaf is for people who want to set up a lot of staggers.
Optimal backhand Blade is Keen with S scaling, a couple talismans for increasing damage (rotted insignia, the enemy death buff, consecutive attacks, etc), and exalted flesh. And you can use grease for whatever resistance the boss is weak to, but Mesmer flame is a decent baseline.
