  • Dial M for Music a great jazz show from the early to late 60s. You can find the whole show in my Eddie Shu section. This features my father on Chromatic Harmonica starting at about 3 minutes. One of the most interesting solo's I've ever heard. Aloha, Evan

    Hi Evan,
This is just fantastic! Your father was incredibly accomplished on all of his instruments, and this is the first time I've heard him play solo on harmonica. I recently started to discover the early harmonica band from the 1930's called the Cappy Barra Harmonica Band which was pretty famous playing in major venues and starring in some Hollywood movies. Some of the members split into two groups, one in Chicago and the other in NY, and then eventually I think about half of them volunteered to go into the military service for WWII. I think your dad was one of them but probably continued in one of the entertainment bands in the military.
I'd love to hear of any stories that you may have of your dad when he was in the Cappy Barra or any other harmonica ensemble that you may have!

Aloha Brother. Yes I believe he was with the N.Y. version. Yes he did go into the military here in Hawaii USO but he was enlisted. He was in a group called 5 jerks in a jeep and they did basically an old vaudeville routine including my fathers other skill as a ventriloquist. He was an amazing musician, my favorite. (: Thanks for your interest. Aloha, Evan
