Rewatching this... and thinking, when you first hear Ginette's voice and say:"I like her voice."... thinking "oh sweet summer child, you have NO idea how truly powerful her voice is, in so many way." Ginette. Our greatest singer.
@@lenom1289 i totally agree, altough nowadays i find Ginette voices got Too Much tremolo but still less annoying than Céline.Sadly i wasnt born in 1975 but wouldve love to see her live
This was part of a Celine Dion show for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City. As part of her show, she did several duets with several important Quebec singers, probably none more important than Jean-Pierre and Ginette. As others have mentioned, Jean-Pierre wrote the song. It was Ginette's song. This is Ginette's son. (That's why everything shifted in her court, as you say.) Jean-Pierre also sings, but he's what is called in French a chansonnier, meaning the texts of his songs are more important than his vocal abilities (which have indeed been affected by age). PS - What you're seeing from Celine isn't sadness. It's emotion. Ginette was young Celine's idol. And this song... this song isn't about the words so much. They're about pride in being Quebecois.
Ginette had everything for her, jean pierre whrote that for a show on top of mount Royal the sky broke open, it’s a song talking about someone going up to heaven and not able to come back, it’s a sad song, but a great song, she could have had a carer like celine with rené Angelil, but she was stuck with lovers that took adventage on her and i think she had a kid too at the moment, so she pass on the international career, but she sang all her life she is like our diamant only for us… sadly you wont be able to listen all jean pierre ferland repertoire, but it’s incredebly rich and soo great !
@@alliedseawindvoilier2394 You are right, René Angélil wanted to give Ginette Reno a singing career as the one Céline Dion has, but Ginette did not have the freedom to do it. Ginette Reno has the voice and the talent fairly equal to Celine's.
OMG, never saw this, I'm blown away! This was out of this world.. I don't know why the music industry only supports young artists. They should watch this video to see what the people really love...

When Ginette Reno was young, a manager named René Angelil want to offer to Ginette an international carrier. Madame Reno renounced to it for personal reasons. As you know, René Angelil realized his dream later with Céline Dion. Ginette and Céline are both Québec singers. And Jean-Pierre wrote beautiful songs. Your reaction is so beautiful ❤️
Yes indeed :) And the fact that they sang this song together is very meaningful because, this is how I see it, Celine went to the top internationally and Ginette could had gone the same but chose another path. Maybe your video will spread her talent and love around the world!
So proud to be québécois and see such a reaction to some of our most beloved artists. Cried so hard the first time I saw this. Epic reaction for an epic performance. Thank you se much Dereck for brigning French music into your channel, forever grateful.
I read somewhere on some Quebec stars magazine that one of guilty pleasure of Ginette Reno is once on vacation down south, she goes to karaoke bar where she is obviously mostly unknown, pick some songs and start singing. I can just imagine people faces in the place when she push the notes. That should be epic.
This proves that music is truly an international language if you were caught by emotions (even is french is not familiar to you). The powerful Ginette brought tears to my eyes even thought I heard this song many times. it’s probably one of the best written by JP Ferland. This moment was quite special and emotional... This concert was for the 400'th anniversary of Quebec City. 400 000 people were there. Ginette Reno is the first signer René Angelil, who became later the husband of Celine Dion, was manager for. Ginette had a wonderful career, but choosed to continue signing in french and not pursue a carreer in English, in USA. So René Angelil began to manage the carreer of Celine and the rest of the story is well known. This moment is the reunion of those 2 marvelous women. Ginette is really loved in the Province of Quebec. Her presence at this show was a total surprise, so you can now understand why her persence made people so happy. A warm "hello" from one of your follower from Quebec City, Canada. (Sorry if I did some English mistakes, for I'm french speaking person and don't write often in English)
I was there Dereck! I remember seeing this live like it was yesterday and it was truly moving. As a 24 year old metal head at the time, the only reason I was there was to accompany my mother to her Celine Dion concert as a kind gesture. I was absolutely taken by surprise by how moved I was when they played this song so I completely get your reaction. This was in 2008 during the 400th anniversary celebrations of Québec City. You should come visit sometime. Cheers buddy!
Certainly one of the best (if it is note Best) live-performance ever - The best thing’s it’s totally in French showing unbelievable Québec people that French language is really and still an international language that can carry meaningful emotions an ever more to everyone in the world 🌎! Québécois singers have perfectly succeeded in mixing and synthetizing the tradition in french de "la chanson française" with good written texts and the tradition in english of the great north american voices... that made their music so beautiful, so typical, peculiar, and emotional.
There is a big emotional story also between Celine and Ginette. Because at first it was Ginette who was René Angélil’s protégé, she had the voice to go international and this was Angélil’s project to do so but Ginette didn’t want to and decided to pursue her career in Quebec , Canada leaving Angélil with his international dream without an Artist to pursue his ambitions. After that he couldn’t find a singer like Ginette, he was loosing everything until he met Celine when she was 13 years old, then he figured out he had the possibility to pursue his dream with Celine. On her side Celine wanted to be an international artist…. The rest is history.

This is what exactly I was going to write to you, Dereck. That explains the big emotional moment for the public, around the minute 5 of this video. An historical moment about 2 diffrent singers' destiny.
The song, to me, has always been about someone wanting more, wanting to be bigger, wanting fame and fortune and leaving a most cherished one behind in the process. She wants to climb higher, go further. She says let go of my arm but keep hold of my hand. Then later, without meaning to, she's the one to let go of the hand. She cries out 'Look, I'm so high, it's beautiful''. I love you, I'll come back to you, if I can climb back down without falling. I still love you but I don't see you anymore, I'm too high, you're too low.
Yes, it's the meaning I always heard and since I am old 🙂 I heard the song when it was first recorded by Jean-Pierre Ferland. The singer becomes a star and has to leave his/her lover to climb on top.
Oh I'm so glad, @dereckreacts you listened to this! I've watched it numerous times... I cry everytime. Ginette.... there are no words to explain how she is THE great singer in Québec. Every song she sings is incredibly moving (even the national anthem during the hockey playoffs! 😉). I just feel that anyone who loves music must listen to her once in his/her life. So happy that you now know the emotionnal power of Ginette Reno.

Ginette is a big star in Quebec, Canada. She sings with her heart and soul, always truthful to herself. She is a bundle of emotions, always. We love her.
Hi Derek! Just so you know. Ginette is partly deaf and yet she can sing like this, she's that good of an artist. She's an icon, she's THE biggest star here. I was raised listening and signing her songs. I love that woman.
Yes, Jean-Pierre Ferland is the songwriter of “Un Peu Plus Haut, Un Peu Plus Loin”. He is a good singer but not the best male vocalist, so yes, Céline did overtaken him but she has such powerful voice. Jean-Pierre Ferland is an awesome songwriter, he has written so many hits over all the decades of his career. He has written hits for himself first but for others too like Ginette Reno and a very young Céline Dion. He is iconic here in Québec. And he has a knack for writing those deeply emotional songs. Now, he is mostly retired (he is 87) but no one has forgotten him, far from it. Ginette Reno is still singing.
Also at his age, his voice isn’t what it used to be. That’s why he kept on announcing his retirement. He kept missing the stage so he did a few comebacks. My dad repaired some of his antique furnitures back in the 80’s-90’s and Jean-Pierre invited him to do some horseback riding. My dad declined the invitation but he still talks about how nice he was.
oooh what an amazing reaction i loooooooooove that duet !!! ginette reno's voice is so warm and full she deserved so much more recognition worldwide, of course she's THE star in quebec and an amazing artist but i wish more people could listen to her so thank you !!
Welcome to Ginette Renos' world!! She gets to everyone each time she sings. She is our Queen over here in Québec. Céline was honoured to sing with this amazing lady and each time Ginette sings, she pours her heart out and at the same time she enters our souls. 😊😊
It's a song about ambition, ascension, and dream, but in the context of a break-up. The author, Jean-Pierre Ferland, said that it was inspired by his own life, when he broke up with a woman he loved because he wanted to pursue a carreer in France while that woman wanted to stay in Québec. It's truely one of the best song ever written in French.

@@sharpiie9087 Maybe you are right, but I don't believe it's the case. I don't think Celine can steal the show on this song against Ginette. I read someone else writing that Celine couldn't reach the high notes because she was crying while signing, she couldn't reach her full signing potential because of that. I believe that theory too.
Ginette Reno sang that same song in June 1975 for Quebec's National Day on Mount Royal, Montreal. She had a 11 minutes ovation! ruclips.net/video/90YHdWGyesk/видео.html It is this historic moment that they wanted to remake with Celine in 2008 on the Plaines of Abraham.
A historic moment in Canada music Ginette Reno in her 70 s at that time just imagine her voice in her 20s my god back then one of the 3 best voices in the world 🌎 in her 20s and you can imagine his the very first idol of Celine that’s why is crying while singing and also the only time that they sang together that’s why here in Quebec a historic moment that everybody wanted to see for so long those 2 singing together Celine always said that Ginette his her idol and that performance is probably the most emotional song that Celine has done since besides the passing of her parents she sang the same day that they died monstrous powerful performance 😁👌

@Dereck Reacts I'm so glad you liked it and that it touched you without understanding the meaning of the song while reacting to it ! I cried like a baby when I first saw this. It's so emotional on so many levels. Because of the meaning of the song first, and most of all because it was the first time that Céline had the chance to sing with Ginette, who was her idol when she was young, and whom René was the manager just before he became Céline's manager. So it's like the ultimate loop in Céline's career. Singing with the biggest star from Québec when she was a child, now that she is the biggest star herself, and singing with the woman that René managed before her, who, if he didn't stop manage her first, who knows what may have come to Céline's career ? That's why she can't help crying during the song. So so touching...
Well said! Thanks! C' est très bien résumé! Merci! 😊

Hi Derek just discovered your channel How ? Because today, the women's day, the public national french canadian broadcaster (radio-canada première) did speak about the "diva" and of course Céline was picked but also Ginette Reno. It is at this very moment the journalist spoke about your reaction of this song. :-) And here I am. As a french speaking person is so rare to notice that english speaking people did have some interest at the french culture. So congratulations to your very open mind in culture.
This song can have a lot of different interpretation, someone's passing, how life can change two people and then separate them, etc. There is also a political/nationalistic uundertone to the song, it was written during the quiet revolution here in quebec. In that decade, Quebec emancipate itself from the catholic church; schools, hospitals became public, education was made widely available and a lot of the public institutions we have today were created at that time. French-canadian became proud of their culture and their unique heritage in nord america and the english superiority over the french speaking part of the population became less and less important. So, Jean-Pierre Ferland was in a way celebrating every opportunity his people had nerver have and now had but at the same time, thinking about the fear of losing a part of ourselves in all those changes.
Thanks for sharing those two wonderfull signers from my québec in canada. Céline and Ginette are our best singners we love them so much. Its very touching to watch you react even if you dont understand french you can feel the emotions just by the music and their tones of voices...magnific men 😉

Don't shit yourself Bro, this is a very meaningful song in Quebec. It is a song about a hope, a hope that one day, we will have our own country. That's what drives those performers, that's the emotion. The original performance dates from 1975.
Bonjour Dereck ! Your comments about Ginette Reno's signing and performance are spot on. Here, in Québec, she is still the greatest singer. There is no comparison with any other female singer. Her voice has not changed. I understand and love your reactions - we feel the same. The song ''Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin'' was composed by Jean-Pierre Ferland in 1969. That song entered the "Panthéon des auteurs et interprètes", in 2003. (Pantheon of authors and performers) in 2003. In 1975, it was an evening to remember. Mrs. Ginette Reno's masterful interpretation at the closing show of the Fête Nationale du Québec (National Day of Quebec) on Mont-Royal (Montréal, Qc). The greatest !
Ginette Reno published her first album in 1962, and she still sings at 75 years old. That is almost 60 years of career. Very few singers from the 60's are still singing today. Her voice is more powerful then Celine.

Ginette.

Very well said Frédérique! ❤️ So much history in this song and this performance.
Si bien dit. Bravo! D'une compatriote Montréalaise
Ouf. J'aurais pas mieux dit! Merci ❤

That's hilarious!

😊🎶
"choosed" I got a brainfreeze reading that word
I think your English is pretty good.
Ginette makes me cry every time she sings. Her voice is so powerful, her soul shows.

Ginette went to USA, but as she did not have the body of a skinny model, ''they'' wanted her to loose weight. She said ''No thank you.''

Hi Dereck! That was the perfect reaction I was expecting about this performance!!! I have goosebumps each time I’m hearing the finale
Quebec is always so emotional 😅 why we french love them....our little cousins 😂

That is very very special Derek. Thank you for finding this. Very very very special indeed❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Derek, what you just witnessed, it’s a huge moment…. I’m glad it got to you.

Well said! Thanks!

I'm from Québec and I'm so proud of that video. Thank you for making us shine. Vive le Québec ❤️❤️❤️❤️
That's not even my kind of music but Jesus Christ. ...that was amazing 👏

For me Ginette Reno shes the Best singner in Canada History.
One of our most beautiful voice and soul here in Quebec ❤️ Ginette Reno is incredible
Ginette Reno published her first album in 1962, and she still sings at 75 years old. That is almost 60 years of career. Very few singers from the 60's are still singing today. Her voice is more powerful then Celine.
I was balling my eyes out the first time, and the times afterwards... and the lyrics make it even more emotional xxx
I am ondering if the people in the audience had any idea they were going to witness one of the greatest live moments in music history. this moment was on par with pinkfloyd's comfortably numb from Pulse or queen at live aids...
simply incredible.
Ginette Reno is incredible!!! OMG!!! I discovered her with the song "Pourtant ma vie" sang with Roch Voisine and I was blown away. But here... OMG!!! I had to cry too!

What makes Ginette Renault soooo special is the fact that she can sing to perfection even though she's deaf. She can ear anything from her left ear and she rely on reading on the lips of people to understand them. That's mindblowing.
We see many Celine haterd here in Quebec but I've never came across anyone hating Ginette
Ginette >Celine
Histoires différentes, je dirais.
You have to know Ginette Reno for sure!!! Every songs are so emotionnal... With Céline that's just perfection ♥️
