I always use a wading staff. It is home made from two layers of American walnut and central layer of Ash. It is quite substantial and can be used to get up and down steep banks and bash branches to release flies. It is chest high and I drilled a hole through at waist height and attached a bungy cord so I know the depth of water I am wading into; this came in particularly useful at the top end of the Derbyshire Derwent when wading on slabs, reached out and it virtually disappeared. The old saying there are old waders and there are bold waders but there are no old bold waders has been adapted in my mountain biking adventures as well.
Seeing you wearing a knitted sweater as an outer layer reminded of fishing many years ago when friends would wear sweaters and forever needing a hook removed. Ever since then I never wear such material on the outside. Being a bit doddery on my pins these days, I use one of those adjustable walking poles with a weighted tip, however I wouldn't suggest them for boulders and fast water.
Welcome to the fraternity, you have been initiated into the fellowship of fly anglers, those who have fallen in, toughed it out and gone on to catch more good fish. Congratulations I. B. P.S., I reckon Andy would have called it a day.
I struggle with wading to and love my staff but when I need to go backward I turn to one side or the other so I hit structure with side of foot instead of heel I find it more stable specially when I’m fighting a fish and can’t use my staff I also keep my staff extended and connect it to a net retriever on my belt so I can leave hanging down stream makes quickly accessible love your enthusiasm you have even when you fall in it’s refreshing
Nice one IB - The Trout Queen does it again :) And does it with style. Seriously impressive fishing. Not the only channel showcasing a fall in recently. Always good to see it's not just me that wants to join the fish. There's a school of thought that says don't wade alone. I do but I'm also a very strong swimmer and always have a way to get out of trouble before starting. Please stay safe IB. Congrats again - great video :)
Thank you very much! Have you fallen in recently?? Hahaha I need to find that video! This is what I don't get, I love swimming and diving? But terrified of the unknown in a river? I think it's all the expense staff I have on me that I don't want to get wet 🤣
Leaving for my first ever fly fishing trip tomorrow on the Eel River in California, USA. IB, you are my inspiration! Have to admit that I won't be in gorgeous full makeup like you, but I'll be out there hoping to catch something!
Awww! That warms my heart up so much ❤ You need to tell me how did your trip go? What did you catch? You probably don't even need the glam makeup! I look like death without it haha x
🤣😂🤣 I actually had fell in yesterday!! Was fishing a small waterfall from above and hooked a fish. Tried to kind of step down the waterfall to net the fish and slipped 😱😱 I ended up on a ledge with the water pouring over my back and doon into ma waist waders!!! Didn't stop me fishing though!! I'm not great with wading either, especially on larger rivers like the Clyde up here in Scotland, so I made myself a wading staff from one of my late mum's walking sticks!! Does the job!! 😜 Another great video and some decent gush 😁
Good film......engulged is a perfectly good conflation of engulfed and gorged...... stick with it. Wading backwards is always a bad idea, most likely way of falling over, usually for me with salmon or sea trout attached......on a serious point, I’ve a Scierra wading staff, they’re bungee corded I believe, unfortunately if the foot catches they can ‘separate’ when you need them most....... Simms and guideline do wire centred lockable ones with a interchangeable foot- rubber button. Put it on a retractor and it’s alway by your left hand to grab if you stumble.......there’s no shame at all in using a wading staff.
Great job on all your catches! I love my wading staff!! It makes all the difference. I use tippet rings sometimes but I usually add tippet with a surgeon’s double knot. It’s a great knot for me and I can use it faster than I can tie on a tippet ring.
It happens to the best of us. I think every time I have gone in when wading is when walking backwards and hitting a rock with the back of your foot - fatal. I made my wading staff or staffing wade if prefer, according to Hugh Falkus' instructions (Salmon fishing book) - made from a broom handle - works perfect and didn't cost a penny - also has lead on the bottom so the flow doesn't push it away. Not collapsible like commercial ones but has a strap to go over my shoulder and is very strong. Like others have said a very useful bit of kit when wading a new stretch of river, when it is really flowing or when there are rocks all over the place.
What kind of strap do you have on your staffing wade 🤣 to have it on you? As that's one thing I found I'm stuck, if I'm wading out to the river, once I'm there ready to fish, I have nowhere to put it down, and because I have my rod with me, I Don't have 2 hands to collapse and fold the wading staff and put it back in the holder? But river is all rock on the bottom so nowhere to stick it in either
@@IBandAndyFishing Hi - following Hugh Faulkus' guide I have used an old shoulder strap from some kind of holdall that is no more. It is quite wide webbing and is adjustable - it just goes over my shoulder. It does trail in the water a bit whilst fishing due to its weight but isn't a problem unless in really fast water . It is possible to fit a clip like some nets have for attaching to a back clip. And this forum site they seem to suggest this helps with quick release www.speypages.com/threads/wading-staff-weight.71771/page-2#lg=thread-71771&slide=3 - maybe I'll add that to mine at some point. I like the magnetic releases you use for your net - maybe one of those would be even better. A friend has one of those commercial collapsible wading staffs, but apart from the cost - I like to make stuff - they look too lightweight to stay in the flow and thin/flimsy. I also use mine to go down steep banks (river Teme) and put a lot of weight on it - I don't think the shop ones would take that - they would fold. Maybe I could make you one in exchange for an hour's tuition? 😉
Good video, I understand about the wading as being an old un now if I fell in where I fish I would be gone so never above knees and only where I can see the bottom, watched your French nymphing vids so my leader and indicator are on there way, still have eve rise of grayling but tried every fly in the box to no avail so we will see about this nymphing style. cheers
Get in touch with Craig McDonalds, he ties some brilliant little flies for grayling. Helped me on days when I got through the whole box and they didn't want anything, his wee flies changed the game!
Another entertaining video thank you, I have the same Staffing Wade , but like you it does not work when you are reversing, I have done exactly the same, most people will have falling in, but not everyone will admit it , keep the videos coming please, thank you
Thanks for the video. I caught my first ever rainbow from a pontoon at a local lake. I was so excited that I stepped off the side an got soaked. The good news was that it didn't get off the hook but the bad news was that I had an eight mile cycle ride to get back home. I still think it was worth it. :-)
Looked like a nice day out.i think a wading staff is almost as important as a rod. Many times I’ve had to use mine. Especially if heavy rain comes when you are out and river swells. Mine is on my vest all the time.
IB and Andy Fishing my vest is a airflow Back pack vest. I attach it on the top back right side shoulder ring with a strong net magnet and with a coiled lanyard attached to a loop at the bottom of the vest in case it comes off I won’t lose it. Mine is not a fly fishing pole. It’s a regular hiking pole that extends a few times to different lengths. It’s always with me and if not being used I also use one of the straps on the backpack part to hold it up out of the way. I will put a pic up on your Facebook page when I’m out of Facebook jail 😂😂😂👍🏻
IB and Andy Fishing Up here in Yorkshire the rivers are all rocky, boulders and carvel with some sand.Very uneven footing and very dark waters due to the tannin from the peat moorlands. So anything over 3 ft is dark and can’t see the bottom. Perfect conditions for the trout to hide in behind structures. I use the staff to test for depths if don’t know the river that well and if going through fast waters or dark cloudy waters. Very handy to have if a river fisher. A must I would say.
Part of the fishing isn't it! We all have those days when nothing goes to plan and days when everything is perfect. We need to be able to see all of it. Much love ❤

Definitely shame about the dip, I reckon it cost me a few more fish! Oh well. I love the pack, Andy suggested that I should do a what's in my pack video and also review the pack at the same time, so I might do that soon
Totally true! Although I do hope I can just build my confidence up and then be able to venture out without it once I know these new waters well enough. Trouty goodness 🙈 honestly. I swear I can't talk English!
